Amazon’s fast-growing cloud division couldn’t help its parent company avoid posting its first quarterly loss since 2015.

Amazon Web Services saw revenue grow by 37% to $18.4 billion for the first quarter of 2022. That amounted to an operating profit of $6.5 billion, which was up 57% year-on-year and outpaced analyst expectations by almost $1 billion.

Both of its main cloud rivals, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud , posted strong growth to start the year, as the market for cloud computing shows no signs of slowing down , despite the sort of difficult macroeconomic conditions which are impacting their parent companies.

It’s no surprise that the top tech companies are also the top cloud companies. It’s also no surprise that these top tech companies are making big investments in green energy. Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are now the three largest buyers of solar and wind power, according to new data from BloombergNEF , and they easily outdistance all other corporate buyers.

Although they have altruistic motivations, keep this in mind: Enterprises that consume technology (the market for public cloud providers) now actively seek cloud providers that are green. Enterprises, as well as investors, typically use the accepted standard ESG (environmental, social, and governance) metrics to determine how ethical and sustainable an organization is in practice. According to McKinsey , companies that have higher ESG ratings also outperform the market. Thus many enterprises see that short-term sustainability strategies and investments can lead to positive longer-term business outcomes.

Deno 1.21 has been released. This latest upgrade to the JavaScript/TypeScript runtime features improvements to the REPL (read-evaluate-print loop) and a move away from default type-checking.

The Deno REPL is a tool for prototyping and trying out new things. With Deno 1.21, an -–eval-file flag can be used with the deno repl subcommand. This flag allows for passing of a list of paths or URLs to files that will be executed before the REPL starts and is useful for building custom, specialized REPLs. Also, type checking has been disabled for imported modules in the REPL, leading to faster imports. And the REPL now has a global clear() function that acts as an alias for console.clear . This aligns with what is found in REPLs in many browsers, Deno’s developers said.

Azure Functions are just an implementation of platform as a service (PaaS), one that is based on an event-driven programming model. As there are no servers that you have to manage, Azure Functions can scale automatically, and you pay only for the time your code runs. You can leverage Azure Functions for event processing in real time, or for scheduled data processing jobs, such as scheduled data backup or data clean-up. You can even use Azure Functions as serverless back ends to mobile applications.

While still the industry’s leading Java distribution, Oracle Java’s popularity is half what it was just two years ago, according to a report from application monitoring company New Relic.

The finding was included the company’s 2022 State of the Java Ecosystem report, released April 26, which is based on data culled from millions of applications providing performance data to New Relic. Among Java Development Kit (JDK) distributions, Oracle had roughly 75% of the market in 2020, but just 34.48% in 2022, New Relic reported. Not far behind was Amazon , at 22.04%, up from 2.18% in 2020.

String.prototype.replaceAll

The replaceAll() method takes a string or regular expression, called the pattern , as its first argument. The second argument is the pattern's replacement . Given the first and second argument, replaceAll() returns a new string that will be the source string with all instances of the pattern swapped for the replacement. The source string is not affected.

In a bid to meet demand from businesses that want to reduce or eliminate the overhead of managing databases, content delivery network and web security provider Akamai is releasing its first DBaaS (database-as-a-service) offering, close on the heels of acquiring cloud hosting provider Linode for $900 million in February this year.

Called Linode Managed Database, the managed service is being offered with support for MySQL initially across Linode's 11 global data centers, the company said, adding that support for PostgreSQL, Redis and MongoDB is expected to follow later in the second quarter this year.

The company claims that most of its customers have requested a managed database service.

HPE has released a pair of systems designed to broaden the uptake and speed deployment of machine learning among enterprises. Swarm Learning is aimed at bringing the wisdom of crowds to machine learning modeling without sacrificing security, while the Machine Learning Development System is meant to offer a one-box training solution for companies that would otherwise have had to design and build their own machine learning infrastructure.

The Machine Learning Development System is available in physical footprints of several different sizes, but the company says a "small configuration" uses an Apollo 6500 Gen10 compute server to provide the horsepower for machine learning training, HPE ProLiant DL325 servers and Aruba CX 6300 switches for management of system components, and NVIDIA's Quantum InfiniBand networking platform, along with HPE's specialist Machine Learning Development Environment and Performance Cluster management software suites.
