Airbnb is allowing my tenant to illigally sublet my house

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 5 days ago - 06:00 · 1 minute

It is enabling her to make money while she is refusing to pay rent

I am banging my head against the wall with Airbnb, which is allowing a tenant to sublet my house illegally. She began to fall short on the monthly rent payments in early 2022. I had a good relationship with her, and showed patience and understanding. Last November, when the rent arrears had increased to £18,600, I discovered that my house was listed on Airbnb, with reviews going back to April 2022. When I confronted the tenant, she ordered me to get out of her house, and has since stopped paying any rent. I asked Airbnb to remove the listing and had to provide proof of ownership before it would discuss the matter. It then told me it did not get involved in third-party disputes and referred me to the host. Relations with the tenant have completely broken down, so that is not an option. My house has continued to be listed on Airbnb, which is enabling the tenant to make money from my house, while refusing to pay rent.

Your tenant signed an assured shorthold tenancy agreement that specifically bans subletting. That’s of no consequence to Airbnb which, extraordinarily, does not require evidence that hosts are legitimate, although it was quick to demand legal documents from you.

Britain’s staycation boom may be over as bookings dry up

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 7 April - 04:00

The cost of living, cold weather and a surplus of holiday lets have hit rental property owners in both cities and the seaside

Is the British staycation boom over? Short-term holiday rentals experienced a surge in recent years , especially during the pandemic, when Britons stayed at home in the UK, leading to a spike in rates.

However, holiday-let owners across the UK are reporting a significant fall in bookings so far this year as the sector feels the effects of the cost of living crisis, poor weather and an increasingly saturated market.

Airbnb host increased price by 39% after booking

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 28 March - 07:00

We were forced to cancel when the host wanted thousands extra, but were still charged a fee

My daughter used my credit card to book a five-month stay using Airbnb after taking up an internship in Toronto. After the host accepted the booking, she got an email saying the price for the overall stay had increased by £4,000 – a further 39%.

Panicked, and unable to afford the extra sum, she cancelled. Airbnb has taken a £1,962 fee, plus a further £682 for cleaning and taxes. As my daughter cancelled immediately, it is extremely unlikely that a booking was lost.

Thousands of London long-term rental properties at risk from holiday lets plan

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 24 March - 10:00

Government rule changes on Airbnb-style rentals could lead to loss of more than 10,000 long-term rentable properties

A loophole in government proposals to clamp down on Airbnb-style holiday lets could lead to the loss of thousands of long-term rental properties for families in London.

The government scrapped tax breaks for holiday homes in the budget and last month unveiled a registration scheme to help councils control the booming holiday let market, which Michael Gove, the levelling-up secretary, claims is denying local people the opportunity to buy or rent a home.

Airbnb, like hotels and rival vacation rental site Vrbo , will no longer allow hosts to record guests while they're inside the property. Airbnb previously allowed hosts to have disclosed cameras outside the property and in "common areas" inside, but Airbnb's enforcement of the policy and the rules' lack of specificity made camera use troubling for renters.

Airbnb announced today that as of April 30, it's "banning the use of indoor security cameras in listings globally as part of efforts to simplify our policy on security cameras and other devices" and to prioritize privacy.

Cameras that are turned off but inside the property will also be banned, as are indoor recording devices. Airbnb's updated policy defines cameras and recording devices as "any device that records or transmits video, images, or audio, such as a baby monitor, doorbell camera, or other camera."
