Apple and Google introduce standard to combat AirTag and Tile tracker misuse

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 2 May, 2023 - 21:21

Today, Apple and Google announced that the two companies have jointly "submitted a proposed" specification to combat stalking using devices like AirTag or Tile trackers.

In its newsroom post, Apple claims that the specification has been developed based on feedback from a range of device manufacturers as well as safety and advocacy groups. Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, Eufy, and Pebblebee have all "expressed support" for the specification.

This new development comes after countless examples of trackers like Apple's AirTag trackers being used for malicious stalking in various contexts. When Ars first reviewed the AirTag , we wrote that the tracker's capabilities were impressive for its intended uses—but that they were unfortunately also impressive for malicious purposes.

NYPD urges citizens to buy AirTags to fight surge in car thefts

The New York Police Department (NYPD) and New York City's self-proclaimed computer geek of a mayor are urging resident car owners to equip their vehicles with an Apple AirTag. During a press conference on Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams announced the distribution of 500 free AirTags to New Yorkers, saying the technology would aid in reducing the city's surging car theft numbers.

Adams held the press conference at the 43rd precinct in the Bronx, where he said there had been 200 instances of grand larceny of autos. An NYPD official said that in New York City, 966 Hyundais and Kias have been stolen this year thus far, already surpassing 2022's 819 total. The NYPD's public crime statistics tracker says there have been 4,492 vehicle thefts this year, a 13.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year and the largest increase among NYC's seven major crime categories.

Adams, as the city did when announcing litigation against Kia and Hyundai on April 7, largely blamed the rise in car thefts on Kia and Hyundai , which he said are "leading the way" in stolen car brands.

Tile should—and needs to—do better than the DIY-looking “Tile for Cats”

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 28 April, 2023 - 21:50

tile for Cats on a cat

Did you know Tile sells Bluetooth trackers for your cat? Why don’t you just stick a small tracker on something cheap and attach it to your cat’s collar, you say? Well, that’s exactly what Tile did. At a time when Bluetooth-tracking companies should be rethinking their approach and reputation among shoppers, a Tile Sticker slapped on a cheap collar attachment feels like a wasted opportunity.

It took a surprisingly long time for Tile to release an official pet tracker, but Tile for Cats finally became available Wednesday for $40 —$10 more than a Tile Sticker's solo MSRP . Tile's announcement describes the product as the simplistic solution it is. It merely “combines Tile Sticker with a silicone collar attachment."

And that's the first reason why Tile for Cats doesn't feel like an exciting new product—and it doesn't look like one either. If someone wanted something that looked like a DIY pet tracker, they'd probably make one. That device would also probably have something cuter written on it than "Tile," like this GPS pet tracker on Hackaday that says "Squeak."
