He has now withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters, which begins in just over a week on 7 April and the Munich ATP 250 event, which starts on 15 April.

    • Murray failed to take four points for first set

Andy Murray played at a high level for an extended period against one of the best players in the world, but he was outperformed in the decisive moments by Andrey Rublev, the fifth seed, who saved four set points before defeating Murray 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open.

Indian Wells has often been Murray’s bogey tournament, with the slow, high-bouncing courts and gusty wind often leaving him vulnerable to early exits even at the peak of his career, but he showed that he was striking the ball well by reaching the second round with a clinical performance over David Goffin. A much more difficult task awaited in Rublev.

Andy Murray succumbs in gruelling three-hour Qatar Open defeat to Mensik

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Wednesday, 21 February - 17:39

    • Jakub Mensik, 18, wins 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) in over three hours
    • Murray said to himself mid-match: ‘You don’t believe in yourself’

Andy Murray’s considerable efforts to rebuild his faltering form took a crushing blow on Wednesday as, despite fighting hard for more than three hours, his nerves betrayed him in the decisive moments against the impressive 18-year-old Jakub Mensik and he eventually succumbed in the second round of the Qatar Open. At three hours 24 minutes, it was the longest match in the tournament’s history.

Throughout his dire past six months on the tour, Murray has insisted that he has been performing well in practice and he has simply struggled badly to produce the same level under pressure in matches. His performance on Wednesday further underlined that rather than his body betraying him, as would be expected from a 36-year-old with a metal hip, at the moment he simply cannot get out of his own head.
