Apple's latest iPad refresh is minor on the surface, but there's a big step forward inside.

The new iPad Air refresh is mainly about two things: the M1 chip and 5G. Apart from those changes, the new tablet is very similar to its 2020 predecessor.

Those two things are probably not enough to make upgrading from the 2020 model worth it, but thanks to the M1, the 2022 iPad Air is a slam dunk if you have an older iPad or another tablet and you're ready for a step up.

It doesn't seem like that long ago that Apple announced a plethora of new iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro computers, but we're likely now just a couple of months away from another product unveiling event from the company.

The Internet is spinning with wild speculation today, so now seems like a good time to check in and set expectations as much as is possible at this stage.

Why a spring event?

Apple spring events in the past several years have fallen on April 20, March 25, March 27, and March 21. And based on the company's typical release/update cadence, several of Apple's products are due now: high-end Mac mini models, the iPad Air, the iPhone SE, the Mac Pro, the larger-format iMac, and the iPad Pro.

Dropbox is working on its promise to support M1-based Macs natively, as a recently released beta version of the company's app for macOS supports Apple Silicon in the current MacBook Air , MacBook Pro , 24-inch iMac , and Mac Mini .

Apple debuted its M1 silicon in 2020. Since then, Dropbox has yet to offer a version of its file-hosting service that runs natively on computers using Apple's chips, frustrating some professional users who rely on and pay for the program for work.

Without the beta, M1 users are required to use Rosetta 2, software that translates apps with x86_64 instructions for Apple's Arm-based silicon, in order to use the Dropbox app. Running Rosetta 2, however, can generally have an effect on battery life, memory, and performance. For most, Rosetta 2 is a sufficient solution for running Intel-based applications. And it's possible that some lesser-known apps will never get transitioned to M1 systems at all.

    Apple loses a key Mac silicon executive to Intel amidst M1 transition / ArsTechnica · Thursday, 6 January, 2022 - 21:26

Jeff Wilcox, Apple's director of Mac system architecture who oversaw much of the Apple Silicon transition, has left Apple to join Intel. He will head up Intel's efforts to develop its own system-on-a-chip.

Wilcox makes this move after eight years as a key player in Apple's desktop and laptop product development. Before those eight years, he was actually at Intel, so the move to Intel is a return for him, not an entirely new frontier.

He announced the change on LinkedIn over the past few weeks. In his initial LinkedIn post, he wrote:

Apple has already finalized the second generation of Mac processors, and the third generation is expected to be made with a new 3-nanometer process, according to a report in The Information citing people with direct knowledge of the plans.

The report says that the second-generation chips will use an "upgraded version" of the 5-nanometer process used for the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max found in recent Apple Silicon Macs. But unlike those first-generation chips, some of the second-generation chips will have two dies instead of one, allowing for more processor cores.

A second-generation chip with just one die will be included in the long-rumored, redesigned MacBook Air as well as in iPads. That chip is code-named Staten. On the other hand, the MacBook Pro will feature more powerful second-generation chips code-named Rhodes. The second-generation chips have already been finalized and are ready to enter trial production, according to The Information's sources.
