Apple’s cheaper Pencil is available to buy now, but it has some limitations

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 1 November - 20:28 · 3 visibility

The new USB-C Apple Pencil is now available for sale through Apple's website, with the first shipments arriving on November 3. It looks like it will be available in physical stores starting around November 8, too.

The $79 peripheral is the third Apple Pencil model, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's the best choice; it's the new cheaper, entry-level option. The second-generation Pencil is the highest-end one, at $129.

What makes this Pencil different? Well, you can look at the gigantic table above from Apple's website to see the features as they compare to other models—or you can read what we wrote a couple of weeks ago when it was first announced:

Apple introduces a new Pencil for the iPad—its cheapest yet

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 17 October - 19:54

Apple has announced a new version of its popular Pencil peripheral for the iPad. Simply dubbed "Apple Pencil" yet again, it is the cheapest option to carry the name yet.

The new Pencil is priced at $79; that's $20 cheaper than the first-generation Apple Pencil and $50 cheaper than the second generation. Apple says it will work with any iPad model with a USB-C port.

In fact, the new Pencil itself has a USB-C port. That means you'll use a USB-to-USB cable to charge it on your iPad, Mac, USB-C iPhone, charging brick, or what have you. The USB-C port is subtly hidden behind a sliding cap. This is clearly a big improvement over the awkward "plug your Pencil into the iPad's port" solution of old.

Over the past few days, there have been many conflicting rumors and reports, some from usually reliable sources, about Apple's plans for the next wave of iPad updates. But on close examination, the rumors may not be as contradictory as it seems.

First up was an email blast from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Sunday. Noting that he had written in July that we would see iPad refreshes before the end of the year, he appeared to walk that back, writing, "a new entry-level iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini are all in development with faster chips, but I don’t believe updates of any significance are imminent."

He pointed to his prior reporting that Apple plans a major iPad Pro update with an OLED screen next year, but not before 2023's end.

Apple Pencils can’t draw straight on third-party replacement iPad screens

The latest part of an Apple device to demand a repair by its maker appears to be the screens on newer iPads. Reports from repair shops and customers suggest that Apple Pencils no longer work properly on non-genuine Apple screens, as they draw squiggly lines on a diagonal instead of straight.

Ricky Panesar, CEO of UK repair firm iCorrect, told Forbes that screens replaced on newer iPad Pros (fifth and sixth-generation 12.9-inch and third and fourth-generation 11-inch models) do not deliver straight lines when an Apple Pencil is used to draw at an angle. "They have a memory chip that sits on the screen that's programmed to only allow the Pencil functionality to work if the screen is connected to the original logic board," Panesar told Forbes.

A Reddit post from May 23 from a user reporting "jittery" diagonal lines from an Apple Pencil on a newly replaced iPad mini screen suggests the issue may affect more than just the Pro line of iPads.

Apple drops USB-C and home button from the base iPad, announces M2 iPad Pro

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 18 October, 2022 - 16:12

Today, Apple surprise-announced several new products without much fanfare beyond a store page update and a press release, and three of them are iPads: two new iPad Pro models and a redesigned entry-level iPad.

Since the iPad Pro is mainly getting a spec bump, the big story today is the redesigned base iPad. Apple's entry-level iPad has maintained the same basic, home-button-equipped design for years, but that changes today.

The redesigned iPad has a 10.9-inch, 2360×1640-pixel LCD display that maxes out at 500 nits of brightness. Like the iPad Air and iPad Pro, it lacks a home button, as the screen extends somewhat close to the edges of the device on all sides. Touch ID is now housed in the top button on the edge of the tablet.
