Review: New Atari 2600+ doesn’t justify its plus sign

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 22 November - 13:40 · 1 minute

Well, at least they got the look of the hardware right.

Enlarge / Well, at least they got the look of the hardware right.

If you've ever tried plugging an unmodified early generation gaming console into an HDTV, you already know that modern flat screens do a pretty poor job with RF signals that were designed for a completely different CRT display setting. The recently released Atari 2600+ helps fix this specific problem, giving retro gamers a way to get their classic Atari cartridges looking nice and sharp on an HD screen.

Unfortunately, that's about all this bare-bones, $130 hardware does. If you're expecting the kind of modern quality-of-life features you've seen on other retro console revamps in recent years, lower your expectations accordingly here.

    A cute curio

Let's start with the physical hardware itself, which earns points for authenticity. At a glance, the 2600+ looks exactly like an Atari 2600 unit you might remember from decades past (albeit a four-switch "CX2600-A" model introduced in 1980, not one of the larger "Sixer" models from the late '70s). The fake wood grain and suitably springy front switches are sure to activate the nostalgia centers deep in the brains of gamers of a certain age. There's even a charming, working switch for flipping from Color to Black and White display, an option that hasn't been relevant to most living room entertainment centers since the Carter administration (at the latest).

On Thursday, Atari announced that it will acquire AtariAge , a popular online community for the Atari enthusiasts over two decades. AtariAge is best-known for selling Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800 console homebrews in high-quality cartridge form, as well as games, for the Atari line of computers and other retro systems.

"Atari is now taking its retro-related IP seriously and is creating a wide array of hardware and software based on that IP, while also creating new, original content," wrote AtariAge founder Albert Yarusso in a statement posted on the AtariAge forums.

Yarusso says he will take on a full-time role with Atari and continue to run AtariAge as usual but will have more time to focus on fixing up the site's games database, which he feels needs updating. Still, AtariAge is showing no signs of slowing down on the homebrew front, planning to publish 20 new games on a variety of retro platforms in time for the upcoming Portland Retro Gaming Expo in October.

Atari launches replica 2600 console to go with all its replica 2600 cartridges

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 22 August, 2023 - 21:02

If you read about Atari issuing a new cartridge of a new Atari 2600 game and your first thought was, "What am I supposed to play this on?" there's an answer for you. Today, the company announced the Atari 2600+ , a $130 retro console with a cartridge slot that can accept vintage and modern Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges, plus a $25 CX40+ joystick and $40 CX30+ paddle controller bundle that appear to more-or-less faithfully re-create the originals.

All items are currently available for pre-order and will ship in November 2023. The console includes a 10-in-1 game cartridge with Adventure , Combat , Missile Command , Haunted House , Yars' Revenge , and a few other 2600 games.

The Atari 2600+ takes its design cues from the early-1980s revision of the original console, with fake wood grain on the front and four control switches. But Atari says the console is only 80 percent as large as the original console, "making it easier to fit into modern living spaces." The console also has an HDMI output and uses USB-C for power.

30 years later, Myst demake for Atari 2600 reminds us how far we’ve come

Nearly 30 years after its release on the Mac in 1993, Cyan's Myst is still as unstoppable as ever. As one of the most successful (yet sometimes divisive ) computer games of all time, it sold 6 million boxed copies in the 1990s and later ended up on over a dozen platforms , with remakes counting for even more appearances, including a VR version. Now, thanks to an unofficial hobby project by Vince Weaver, Myst can add one more platform to the list: Atari 2600.

Vince Weaver is an associate professor at the University of Maine in Computer Engineering. Since last year, he has been working on a partial "demake" of the famous point-and-click adventure game that runs on Atari's 8-bit game system, and he just returned to the project to make updates last week .

For those not in the gaming community, the term "demake" might need some unpacking. A demake is essentially the opposite of a remake: instead of upgrading a game to fit modern standards, a demake takes a modern or classic game and adapts it for older, less powerful hardware.

A company called Atari is releasing a brand-new 2600 cartridge this year

The company that currently owns the Atari name and trademarks has decided to give owners of the old Atari Video Computer System (aka the Atari 2600) something new to do. Mr. Run and Jump is a new Atari-published platformer that is coming to vintage Atari consoles in cartridge form, complete with a box and instruction manual. Preorders for the cartridge begin on July 31 for $59.99.

The version of Mr. Run and Jump coming to the 2600 is a primitive version of a much different-looking game with the same name that's coming to PCs and all major game consoles on July 25. We've got to hand it to Atari here—as a PR gambit for a new game, porting a rough version of your game to a 46-year-old game console and then giving it a physical release complete with box and manual is pretty good.

Atari is billing this release as "the first 2600 cartridge launch for a new Atari title since 1990," though there have also been some limited-run cartridge releases for games like 2005's Yars' Return . There were also a few new 2600-inspired games and remakes, including Vctr Sctr , in Atari's 50th-anniversary collection, which also got a physical release on modern consoles.
