A Chicago sidewalk landmark some residents affectionately referred to as the “rat hole” has been removed after city officials decided it was damaged and needed to be replaced.

The sidewalk had an impression that looked like the outline of a rat with claws and a tail, and had been present in Chicago’s North Side neighbourhood of Roscoe Village for years, but it found fresh fame in January after a Chicago comedian shared a photo on the social platform X.

Can TikToks reduce gun violence? Ask these teenagers

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 4 April - 10:00

Project Unloaded invited students in Chicago to create online marketing campaigns – here’s what happened

This story is a collaboration between the Guardian and the Trace , a non-profit newsroom covering guns in America. A more detailed version of the story can be found here .

Once upon a time in America, people rolled their eyes at seatbelts, four out of 10 high school students smoked cigarettes, and campers left their fires smoldering through the night. Then we changed. Not primarily because of policy reforms, but because teams of marketers crafted public health messaging campaigns in which chatty crash test dummies told us to buckle up, teens piled 1,200 body bags in front of the Philip Morris headquarters, and Smokey the Bear identified who can prevent forest fires.

A team of health experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention arrived in Chicago Tuesday to help respond to a flare-up of measles cases at a migrant shelter in the city's Pilsen neighborhood, according to CNN .

So far, there have been four cases identified at the Halsted Street shelter: two young children, one recovered and one hospitalized in good condition as of March 10; and according to an announcement on Monday, March 11 , two adults who were reported in good condition.

The four cases come just days after the city's health department announced a measles case in a Chicago resident with no recent travel outside of the city and no reported connection with the shelter. The case, announced on March 7 , was the first measles case identified in the city since 2019, officials noted. It remains unclear how that resident contracted the highly infectious virus, though the health department noted that the person had been in contact with domestic and international travelers. The person was said to be recovering well at home, and their infectious period ended on March 6.

In 2025, United Airlines will fly an air taxi service between the downtown Vertiport Chicago and O'Hare International Airport, using electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft it is purchasing from Archer Aviation. The Archer Midnight eVTOL aircraft will complete the route in about 10 minutes; according to local resident and Ars Managing Editor Eric Bangeman, that journey by car can take over an hour due to road construction.

"Both Archer and United are committed to decarbonizing air travel and leveraging innovative technologies to deliver on the promise of the electrification of the aviation industry," said Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures. "Once operational, we're excited to offer our customers a more sustainable, convenient, and cost-effective mode of transportation during their commutes to the airport."

United placed an order for 200 eVTOL aircraft from Archer back in 2021 at a cost of $1 billion. The startup has also raised money from the automaker Stellantis, which has been helping the company with making carbon fiber composites.

Here’s where traffic sucked the most in 2022

Did your commute get worse in 2022? Overall, congestion cost the country more than $81 billion, says transportation data company Inrix. It just published its Global Traffic Scorecard for the past year, and the data says the typical US driver spent 51 hours in traffic last year, 15 hours more than in 2021. And due to increased fuel prices and other inflation, the average driver paid $134 more for fuel last year than the year before—and that's in addition to $869 in lost time.

Although it's not as severe as it was in 2020 or 2021 , it's still possible to see the effect of the pandemic in Inrix's data. In the US, vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased by 1 percent year-on-year, but we still drove 9 percent fewer miles per year than before the pandemic. Interestingly, Inrix says this is due to more people continuing to work from home, which it says now accounts for 17.9 percent of Americans—before the pandemic, work from home accounted for only 5.7 percent of workers, according to the US Census Bureau.

Sadly, road safety is still rather abysmal; the estimated fatality rate of 1.27 deaths per 100 million VMT is 17 percent higher than we saw in 2019, although there has been a slight reduction from 2021's high of 1.3 fatalities per 100 million VMT. And while some of the other trends found in the report exist in countries like the UK or Germany, the rise in road deaths appears to be unique to the US.

ÉTATS-UNIS - L’entraide face à l’horreur.
