Crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced Thursday to 25 years [non-paywalled link] in prison for a massive fraud that unraveled with the collapse of FTX, once one of the world's most popular platforms for exchanging digital currency. From a report: Bankman-Fried, 32, was convicted in November of fraud and conspiracy -- a dramatic fall from a crest of success. U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan imposed the sentence in the same Manhattan courtroom where, four months ago, Bankman-Fried testified that his intention had been to revolutionize the emerging cryptocurrency market with his innovative and altruistic ideas, not to steal. Kaplan said the sentence reflected "that there is a risk that this man will be in position to do something very bad in the future. And it's not a trivial risk at all." He added that it was "for the purpose of disabling him to the extent that can appropriately be done for a significant period of time." Prior to sentencing, Bankman-Fried had said, "My useful life is probably over. It's been over for a while now, from before my arrest."

Britain can avoid sleepwalking into a US-style synthetic opioids crisis. Here’s how | Niko Vorobyov

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 2 days ago - 15:24

There are better ways of tackling addiction and overdoses than reverting to the tactics of a failed drugs war

Last week the home secretary, James Cleverly, announced that nitazenes are now being treated as class A drugs, his statement bookended with the usual stern rhetoric about the need to keep “these vile drugs off our streets”. The maximum penalty for selling or supplying class As is life imprisonment.

Cleverly’s decision follows the discovery that several victims of deadly drug poisonings had nitazenes in their system. Nitazenes are synthetic opioids, meaning they are similar to the heroin and morphine refined from opium poppies but made entirely in a lab. First developed as painkillers in the 1950s but never approved for medical use, they have been found mixed into heroin to give the low-grade variety of the drug that extra kick, as well as in bootleg Xanax and Valium pills sold on the dark web. Up to 500 times stronger than morphine, even a tiny amount can prove fatal.

Baby murdered by his parents after ‘inadequate safeguarding’ by social services in Derbyshire, says report

A 10-month-old baby, who was killed by his parents just 39 days after a court returned him to their care, “should have been one of the most protected children in the local authority area”, a review has concluded.

Finley Boden died on Christmas Day 2020 after a period of “inadequate safeguarding” by authorities, who initially removed him from the care of his parents, Shannon Marsden and Stephen Boden, immediately after birth due to concerns for his safety.
