Dune: Part Two Leaks Early on Pirate Sites ‘In Memory of EVO’

      news.movim.eu / TorrentFreak · Saturday, 6 April - 14:06 · 2 minutes

dune2 Pirated copies of movies leak all year round, often ripped from streaming platforms after their official premiere. That by itself is nothing special.

However, when a high-quality copy of a blockbuster title appears online before it’s officially available, people take notice. That’s exactly what happened with Dune: Part Two over the past few hours.

The second installment of the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi book premiered in cinema a little over a month ago. With over $600 million in global box office revenues, it’s the most successful film of the year. The digital release, planned for later this month, is highly anticipated too.

    Dune Leak: Part Two

Dune’s popularity was also noticed in pirate circles; ‘Dune: Part One’ made a surprising comeback in the weekly list of most pirated films. Apparently, some people chose to watch Part One through unofficial channels before buying a cinema ticket for Part Two.

Needless to say, the high-quality leak of Dune: Part Two is also drawing lots of visitors to pirate sites. Its ‘WEB-DL’ tag suggests a lossless rip from an online streaming source. It’s unclear where it originated, as the film is not available through any digital platforms yet; at least as far as we know.

The leak is real, however, evidenced by the screenshot below and the many commenters who were surprised by this early release.

    Remember EVO?

The early leak comes with another noteworthy angle, the inclusion of “InMemoryOfEVO” in its filename. This refers to the release group EVO which was busted in 2021 by the Portuguese police , partly acting on intelligence gathered by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment.

That this ‘tribute’ to EVO comes as part of the Dune leak likely isn’t a coincidence either. EVO was the group that leaked a copy of Dune: Part One before its official release. Not long after, the group disappeared off the radar .

The EVO bust was a pivotal moment for piracy release groups. It marked the end of more than two decades of steady “screener” leaks, in which EVO played a central role in more recent years. The recent Dune leak is no screener, of course, but it’s certainly a high-profile release that will be watched closely by pirates, and Hollywood.

With ongoing talks about a third Dune installment , this may not be the final part of this saga either.

Will there be a Dune: Part Three? Yes… with caveats on timing

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 5 April - 21:26 · 1 minute

Legendary Pictures has confirmed that it plans to make Dune: Part Three with director Denis Villeneuve.

Dune: Part Two is still raking in the moolah at the box office, and deservedly so. But judging by my various feeds, fans are already swooning over the prospect of director Denis Villeneuve extending his vision into a trilogy by adapting Frank Herbert's 1969 sequel, Dune Messiah , for the next installment. Will there be a Dune: Part Three ? Most signs currently point to yes, with a couple of caveats. Exactly how soon we'll be seeing a return to Arrakis depends a lot on Villeneuve.

Variety confirmed that Legendary Pictures is working with the director on developing Dune: Part Three , although it remains unclear from the wording of the plethora of news items whether the project has officially been greenlit. ("Development" can mean a lot of things.) Naturally, the studio is eager, as are we: the film is the biggest hit of 2024 thus far, with global earnings of $630 million (although the hotly anticipated Deadpool and Wolverine this summer might give it a run for its money).

That confirmation sent fresh frissons of excitement across the Internet, although Villeneuve had been talking about the prospect as far back as September 2021 . Those plans always depended on the success of Part Two , and that hurdle has obviously been cleared. By August 2023, the director was on record saying there were "words on paper" for a third film. And we learned just last month that composer Hans Zimmer was already working on the score for Dune: Part Three .

‘Completely unfilmable’: the Dune universe is about to get weird

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 7 March - 19:34 · 1 minute

While Dune: Part Two might currently be the world’s favourite movie, Frank Herbert’s books hint at stranger things on the horizon …

    • Spoilers ahead

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is currently the toast of tinseltown, a big budget sci-fi adventure directed by a Hollywood A-lister and critical darling that has taken the box office by storm and left fans wanting more and more and more. It made more than $180m worldwide in its first weekend alone and inevitably, sequels beckon. Why shouldn’t they, given that Brian Herbert wrote five sequels to his original 1965 tome and Villeneuve has spent the best part of five and a half hours just covering that first book?

Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as that. For this is not Lord of the Rings, an epic trilogy with clear character arcs, a linear central quest and little prospect of sequels once ole Sméagol topples into Mount Doom and destroys the One Ring. Nor is it the original Star Wars, which smartly ends with the defeat of the Empire and (until they ruined everything with the sequel trilogy) the sense that everyone will now live happily ever after. This is Dune, a six-book epic stretched over thousands of years and dozens of planets in which major protagonists transform into giant human-sandworm hybrids, sexy witches try to use their auto-pulsing vaginas to (literally) conquer mankind and major characters keep being brought back from the dead as zombie-clone-stooge versions of their past selves. It is beyond weird, and there is a very good reason Villeneuve himself has so far only committed (and it is a very loose committal) to adapting Herbert’s second novel, Dune: Messiah, after this one.
