Today's news that the Electronic Entertainment Expo is officially, totally, and completely dead was a bit bittersweet for your humble Ars Technica Senior Gaming Editor. Don't get me wrong, I'll miss the chance to meet industry luminaries, connect with far-flung associates, and play games months ahead of time in a setting that's as much a theme park as a trade show. But after spending many a late night covering 15 E3 shows in 16 years, I can say that the crowds, the smells, and the sensory overload associated with the LA Convention Center aren't always all they're cracked up to be .

Still, those who have been there will tell you that, for a gaming fan, there was nothing quite like the bombast and spectacle of the E3 show floor in its heyday.

For those who haven't been there, we've sorted through literally hundreds of E3 photos taken by Ars journalists over the years to assemble a few dozen of the best into this visual travelogue-meets-history-lesson. We hope that skimming through the galleries below will give you some idea of the madcap event that E3 was and why it has generated so many lasting memories for those who attended.

What to expect from Sony’s May 24 not-E3 livestream

E3 might be canceled this year, but the big gaming companies are forging ahead regardless—either as part of Summer Games Fest or with their own presentations and livestreams. Arguably the top dog these days is Sony, which will host what it claims to be a meaty "PlayStation Showcase" on May 24.

The show will last more than an hour, making it quite a bit longer than the usual PlayStation State of Play livestreams, which are usually 30 minutes or so. While Sony has mostly moved beyond the old industry marketing cadence of centering heavily on E3 every June, this looks to be as close to an E3 presser as Sony will offer this year.

Sony promises "a wealth of new games" for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 from a wide range of development studios. "Expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators," a blog post announcing the event says.

E3, now dead, was a show for a bygone game industry

E3, now dead, was a show for a bygone game industry

This year's edition of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) has been canceled. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and show promoter ReedPop announced late Thursday that the planned June event—which was set to be the first in-person E3 since 2019—"did not garner the sustained interest necessary” from major publishers and potential attendees to justify a massive convention.

At this point, the cancellation of the 2023 show wasn't a huge surprise. All three major console makers had already confirmed that they wouldn't be attending, and major publishers Ubisoft and Sega publicly abandoned the show more recently. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz , ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis cited economic headwinds, digital marketing opportunities, and COVID-related game development timeline changes as reasons the companies backed out.

But the decades-long decline of E3 was also apparent well before this year's problems—and even well before COVID forced the cancellation of the 2020 show (and every show in subsequent years). Part of me will miss the glitz and spectacle of the 15 E3s I've attended since 2004. But a larger part recognizes that E3 is a show that was built for a very different game industry and which has utterly failed to change with the times.
