Readers reply: does spam email actually work?

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 25 February - 14:00

The long-running series in which readers answer other readers’ questions on subjects ranging from trivial flights of fancy to profound scientific and philosophical concepts

Does spam email actually work? I don’t mean dodgy phishing emails, but the annoying ads and sales pitches. Presumably the answer is yes, otherwise the spammers wouldn’t bother, but I find it hard to believe. Ali Farhan, Manchester

I'm a boss – please ban me from out-of-hours emails and calls, and save me from myself | André Spicer

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Saturday, 17 February - 06:00

A British ‘right to disconnect’ law like those in Australia and Europe would help me kick my bad habit, and make life better for everyone

I have a secret that I need to own up to: sometimes I’m a bad boss. After spending a couple of decades studying management and leadership, during the last couple of years I have been leading a large business school in London. When I took on the role, I wanted to try to bring an evidence-based approach to my leadership position, and initially I used the relevant science to guide my actions. Over time, however, I found myself falling into bad habits that I knew were a no-no, according to the research.

One of these was contacting my co-workers out of working hours. I knew there was plenty of research that finds that out-of-work-hours communication is generally bad for employee wellbeing, and can also be bad for productivity. However, this didn’t stop me. Some mornings, I would find myself sending colleagues emails at 5am. In the evening, I would be messaging at 10pm. During the weekends, I would find myself firing off documents to colleagues and asking for comments.

Backdoors that let cops decrypt messages violate human rights, EU court says

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that weakening end-to-end encryption disproportionately risks undermining human rights. The international court's decision could potentially disrupt the European Commission's proposed plans to require email and messaging service providers to create backdoors that would allow law enforcement to easily decrypt users' messages.

This ruling came after Russia's intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service (FSS), began requiring Telegram to share users' encrypted messages to deter "terrorism-related activities" in 2017, ECHR's ruling said. A Russian Telegram user alleged that FSS's requirement violated his rights to a private life and private communications, as well as all Telegram users' rights.

The Telegram user was apparently disturbed, moving to block required disclosures after Telegram refused to comply with an FSS order to decrypt messages on six users suspected of terrorism. According to Telegram, "it was technically impossible to provide the authorities with encryption keys associated with specific users," and therefore, "any disclosure of encryption keys" would affect the "privacy of the correspondence of all Telegram users," the ECHR's ruling said.

The worst part of A&E is not the wait – it’s the aftercare | Letters

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Wednesday, 7 February - 18:30

Liz Brooke says poor IT systems prevent important medical information from being shared in a timely manner, while Judith French asks why the NHS doesn’t use email to communicate better

Adrian Chiles’s experience ( What I learned from a freezing night in A&E with my dad, 31 January ) is sadly the norm. Working as a pharmacist in a GP surgery, and also having had a close family member suffer a stroke last year, I see this from both sides and completely agree with him that the problems start following discharge.

Despite all the chaos that ensues during an emergency visit to hospital, the system does work and patients do get sorted, albeit slowly. The problem lies with the disconnected IT systems between the hospital and GP, or even between different hospitals, and the lack of patients’ understanding of this. It’s not unreasonable to assume that all your relevant information has landed neatly into your doctor’s inbox, and that someone will call or visit. Sadly, this is often not the case – discharge summaries from hospital can be late or incomplete, and sometimes don’t turn up at all. Some are still handwritten.

      news.movim.eu / Korben · Monday, 8 January - 08:00 · 1 minute

Thanks to Kevin, a friend from France, I recently discovered "hetrixtools" (link attached) which lets you monitor one or more hosts for free (there are limitations but they are not strict): without installing any software on your machines, you can do #PING, #Website, #SMTP and #Heartbeat checks over your hosts; then if you install their agent (it's really straightforward but #CPU usage was an issue for my single-core VPS) you can get a lot more, from services to ports monitoring, to disk health checks.

So, after I saw that installing the agent was not feasible for me, I decided to try a local run monitoring service and I choose #Monit, which is well documented and all in all quite easy to set up once you get the way it works.

I've got #notifications directly to my #INBOX, via my own #email server and here you can see what I'm monitoring so far.. https://i.imgur.com/uqDceAa.jpeg Each of those items is click-able and gives a lot of detailed info. I cannot see any difference in #CPU usage on my host and am quite satisfied by the results.

      news.movim.eu / Numerama · Wednesday, 4 October - 15:20

    Gmail
