Why new fan blog “Final Fantasy VIII is the Best” is the best

It has never been easier to share your thoughts online. Anyone with a smartphone is mere seconds away from spinning up a new account on any number of popular social media platforms and screaming their opinions into the void. Then your casual, tossed-off thoughts are served up to The Algorithm, which decides whether it's briefly pushed in front of the gathered masses or almost instantly forgotten to the ephemeral tide of the endless scroll.

So there's something intensely charming about Final Fantasy VIII is the Best (FF8itB), a new highly personal fanblog focused on the red-headed stepchild of Square's early 3D RPG output. After a single weekend, the site is already an incredibly entertaining mess that evokes the best parts of a largely defunct and much more personal era of the Internet.

    Final Fantasy VIII ? Really?

Over the years, Final Fantasy VIII has developed a pretty bad reputation among the community of hardcore Japanese-RPG fans. It's not hard to find detailed , borderline- irate takedowns of everything from the game's cheesy storyline to its overcomplicated junction system to a hidden enemy auto-leveling mechanic that makes it hard to feel truly powerful.

I tried to jump back into JRPGs with FFVII Rebirth, and that was a big mistake

It is said that you can’t go home again, and now I am reminded of how true that is. I recently spent more than $500 on a PlayStation 5, largely spurred by an opportunity to play and review Final Fantasy VII Rebirth , a title that activated youthful memories (releasing February 29). This was a big mistake. Perhaps you can learn from it.

None of this is particularly the fault of Rebirth . Even as I could only bring myself to put about 12 hours into it over the space of 11 days’ early access, I understood that those who truly cherish the original game, and still enjoy Japanese role-playing games (“JRPGs”) in general, will find a lot to love here. It’s a beautiful-looking game that runs smoothly on its quality-minded setting. The soundtrack is largely lovely, and I found myself humming the world map tunes while walking my dog or making coffee. Lots of things from the original that would be hard to wade through now, like random encounters and monotonous turn-based combat, have been transmuted into more tolerable forms here. The number of things you can do in this game, just from looking at screenshots of what’s ahead, looks like a true embarrassment of riches.

I am sure that if I harbored stronger memories of the original game, had kept up a JRPG habit over the last 25 years or so, or perhaps had started with the earlier Remake chapter , I might have found more to grab onto in Rebirth. Most people aren’t going to gamble $70, let alone $500, on the chance they’ll be magically transported to being 16 again, with the requisite free time and adolescent brain chemistry that helps one relate to a ragtag set of friends striving against cartoonishly oppressive villains.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth review – a miracle of fan-service

Credit to the developers for combining a tightly authored narrative arc with a compelling and wide-ranging new combat system that somehow satisfies everyone – almost

In every great RPG, there is a point where the protagonist has to leave the safety of their home town. After learning the gravity of the threat that they face, gathering their party and stocking up on provisions, they are ready to embark on an epic adventure.

Now in a twist of irony, beloved RPG creator Square Enix is being forced to do the same. The second entry in an ambitious trilogy that began with Remake in 2020 , Final Fantasy VII Rebirth leaves Midgar’s beloved dystopian cityscape behind, reimagining the second disc of the 1997 PlayStation classic as its own fully fledged adventure. After eco terrorist Avalanche’s clash with shady megacorporation Shinra, Rebirth sees hero Cloud (he of the oversized sword) and co pursuing cackling villain Sephiroth on a globe-trotting journey.

How a decade of playing Final Fantasy XIV has helped me through life and motherhood

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Friday, 8 September, 2023 - 11:00 · 1 minute

The popular MMO game has helped me deal with everything life brings. As I celebrate 10 years immersed in its world, I speak to other people who have found solace in this online community

It’s no secret that the art that moves us becomes associated with certain periods of our lives: the song that helped you navigate your first breakup, the movie that helped you take those first steps into adulthood, the book that persuaded you to try something new. Video games, however, are unique in that some are designed to be played for years. They can develop alongside you, grow up with you, or be a consistent refuge from the mundane.

I’ve played Final Fantasy XIV for a full decade now, enraptured by its fantastical locations and a story that takes you from green adventurer to universe-saving hero. It’s always been the game I turn to unwind at the end of a long day, and my life has completely changed alongside it. I’ve gone from the early stages of my career and a draughty flat, through a long-term relationship, and now I have a house and child – my character, Cel, was there for the whole journey.
