      Some tips for using TooFast.vip:443

      𝖈𝖍𝖚𝖓𝖐 · pubsub.toofast.vip / tech · Wednesday, 7 December, 2022 - 16:05 · 3 minutes

TooFast.vip hosts a style modified instance of Movim

There are some quirks for a newcomer to any current Movim instance, particularly this one, that might make it difficult to explore and I wanted to make a list of some things that you can do to get a ball rolling in it. One might find the lack of content in the drop in page after logging in a bit discouraging however this is what you can do:

    • Go to explore menu item > communities servers > look around in there and anything you like or would like to see show up for you in your news area and hit subscribe
    • Don't be afraid to subscribe to stuff as it's easy to unsubscribe and from my experiences so far it's not going to ping your other XMPP clients when updated.

    Some notes on your settings:

    • If you're afraid of NSFW content, like at all, do not enable that option as things will probably occur, at least on this instance ^^
    • If you don't want to redirect to the news page upon logging in then change the setting where it says to go to chat page after login. This might feel better for many people that aren't so interested in the pubsub portion of this app.
    • Dark mode styles on TooFast.vip are not currently complete yet, but still look really cool.
    • If you change your instance nickname your name title on Movim anywhere will be changed. That option is on the second tab.
    • Adhoc settings for your JID should work in the Actions tab
    • Blocking users is not finished yet on TooFast.vip as the git version grabbed for this instance originally was before that completed. I am unsure of the upstream status on that feature.
    • You can add a few things to your JID from this instance that will carry with your JID as a vcard information and some of or all will persist on your other clients. Including a little bio, avatar and a webpage, etc.
    • Don't be shy and make yourself public! Most of the movim instances don't at this time seem to promote this available feature type but I do!

Some friendly but pressing suggestions for the pubsub use:

    • If you're around on XMPP much and you wish to publish some content you are most welcome to ask me and see if I'd be willing to create a community for you. It's suprisingly easy to do, as I'm suprisingly easy going.
    • If you have the ability to post a post please makes sure that you make it public, there is a toggle at top of post, this is extremely important to my testing of a feature I wish for on this application and if you wish to have any comments you will need to toggle it public.
    • #hashtags are encouraged to use at the bottom of your posts.
    • If you're coming from a self hosted server without a pubsub service I'd be willing to aid in your possibly configuring one to help enjoy this Movim style stuff. I've got a bit of hosting xmpp experience to help make it happen.
    • Please report all things that are disatisfactory or broken. I can give you a 🍪 aha, made of pixels :3 But honestly I, and others, would respect the effort for the greater good of us sharing this software :)

Please note that TooFast.vip does not have a STUN/TURN server available and that may complicate audio/video for some users. It is not a desired feature at this time.

Lastly a fun cool thing that anybody can inherit from using this website is you can have your own XMPP federated microblog! It will have a public URI if you make your profile public and add posts. You can click your avatar top left to see that. Here's an example: https://toofast.vip/?blog/cmdr_coconut%40toofast.vip

Any concerns please message myself or another server admin 🛰️

Hey tumblr users. Here is why Movim could be the best platform to migrate to!

      Timothée Jaussoin · pubsub.movim.eu / Movim · Monday, 3 December, 2018 - 22:45 edit · 3 minutes

Tumblr has decided to ban all NSFW content from its network. Although we understand the reasons why this decision has been made, it's a strong reminder that handling your content - NSFW or not - from a centralized and private platform can always lead to such censorship.

    The Tumblr Logo

Movim has been built to prevent this kind of restriction. Here's a few reasons why.

    Movim is a Free Software

Movim has been and will always be a Free Software. This provides you with the freedom to adapt it, redistribute it and use it in any way you would like to. You are then free to add new features, change some behaviors or customize as you wish, for yourself or your community.

Movim is based on an Open Standard : XMPP

All the content that you are publishing on Movim: articles, private messages or chatroom messages, pictures… are published using your #XMPP account that is separate from Movim itself (like your emails are separated from your email client).

    The XMPP Logo

The XMPP standard is the official IETF Instant Messaging solution and is used accross the world by millions of people daily. Since 2008 Movim is pushing social features on top of it to provide to everyone a simple and modern way of publishing content, subscribing and reacting to it.

Movim is then just a way to access your content on the XMPP network (like your browser is accessing content on the Web). If you don't like Movim, you are also free to use one of the many other solutions to access your content and communicate with others… while keeping the same account!

    Movim is easy to deploy

Movim is lightweight (only a few megabytes) and can be deployed on any server. We are providing a Docker image, a Debian package or a simple installation tutorial if you want to deploy it yourself.

The project only relies on widely used technologies like PHP, HTML5 and is fully compatible with MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite.

One instance can handle several hundreds of simultaneous sessions in real time.

We are also providing apps for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android that can easily be used for your own personnalized instance.

You can then build your own instance in a few clicks and host your own content while still being connected and explore the rest of the network.

Movim provides similar features to Tumblr's

Like Tumblr, it is possible to publish content in a few clicks, write articles (like this one), attach pictures or files. You can publish content on your own profile but also in Communities where you can collaborate with others and create a stream of articles around a topic and bring followers in.

It is possible to apply CSS stylesheets to fully customize your public blog.

It is also possible to share a content that you found on your own account, but also like and comment other people's content!

You can easily #tag content by putting #hashtags in your article or title. The other users will then be able to discover it while browsing tags on their own instance.

Movim has NSFW features built in. If you publish NSFW content, just add the nsfw tag and Movim will filter the content for the users who chose not to view it from their account. A spoiler overlay is also added in your news feed to prevent explicit content to be displayed on your screen while scrolling.

… but also provides more than Tumblr!

All the content published on Movim is broadcasted to your subscribers in real time! You will also be notified instantly for the likes and comments on your publications. A simple toggle will also allow you to publish your articles privately (restrict the publication to your subscribers) or publicly (share with the whole network).

Movim also provides a full, and modern Instant Messaging system, with chatrooms, message edition, stickers, video-conferencing and many more features… In a few clicks you'll be able to invite contacts and chat with them!

Movim is available on all the devices. Its fully responsive and the real-time UI allows you to access your content from your phone, tablet or computer and keep everything in sync.

So what are you waiting for? Come and try it!

If you have any concerns, questions, remarks or critics on the project, feel free to come to our official chatroom: movim@conference.movim.eu and drop us a message.

    That's all folks!

      Movim 0.12 – Lovejoy

      Timothée Jaussoin · pubsub.movim.eu / Movim · Thursday, 19 October, 2017 - 20:18 edit · 4 minutes

With #Lovejoy, #Movim is now #easier than before. Let's discover all the new #features bundled in this awesome #release.

A new way to explore your contacts and Communities

The Movim Contacts page has been entirely redesigned. It now gives you a direct access to your friend's publications and general information. The sidebar also allows you to discover more new publications and nice people.

The Community page, introduced in the 0.11 version, has also been reorganized and now allows you to see what is happening on your #pod at a glance.

    Publish in a simple click

You want to quickly send a picture to your friends? Share a feeling or a thought? The new Quick Publish widget allows you to do that easily.

If you still want to do more advanced publications with formatting, you can press the plus button to access a full featured editor.

Movim also automatically saves the draft of your publications so you can get back to your publication later.

    Organize and explore the publications

Tagging articles in Movim has been greatly simplified. By simply putting #hashtags you can categorize your publications. Now you can also explore public articles having similar tags.

    NSFW content

To protect the children browsing the articles we also added an automatic filter on adult content (enabled by default). When publishing "Not Safe For Work" content you can categorize the articles as so by adding the NSFW tag to it.

If you want to have access to those content, you can enable them in the configuration.

    New look for the publications

Lovejoy also comes with a new design for the articles cards. The embedded links are better integrated and you can now directly like an article while browsing!

The redesign also simplifies the browsing and navigation on mobile devices.

    Movim ❤️ your mobile

The UI of Movim has been redesigned for mobile devices.

A new menu allows you to quickly switch between the four main pages. You can access the full menu by dragging the left side of your phone to the right.

Chat and Chatrooms, new features and redesign

A lot of love has been put in the chatroom features of Movim. They now have the same look and feel as the single chat ones. You can also now embed pictures in the discussions by uploading them or pasting links directly and you can auto-complete the nicknames by pressing Tab when writing a message in the chatrooms.

Since Lovejoy you can start a private discussion with a chatroom member in one click and invite your contacts to join the chat-room by sending them a message, or an invite link.

Thanks to the new autojoin feature, you can ask Movim to automatically join some of your favorite chatrooms when you log in.

    Chat markers

Movim now implements the recent XMPP standard called Chat Markers, this allows you to know if a contact has seen your messages. This feature is also fully compatible with clients like Conversations or Dino.

    Stickers!

Say hello to Miho, the new mascot of the Movim project. A new sticker pack created by Hey-Xander is available on Movim.

    History

With the support of the XMPP standard Message Archive Management you can now resynchronize your history when logging back to Movim, for your private discussions but also in the chatrooms. Never loose any messages anymore between your devices!

    …and also

Under the hood we continue to fix many issues, optimize and refactorize the Movim sourcecode to keep the Core engine clean and secure. This is also made possible by a continuous feedback from our community, via our official chat-room and our Github Page.

As members of our community become more and more involved, new pods have been opened in Sweden, Japan, Germany and Russia. Thanks to the maintainers!

Migration of our official XMPP server to ejabberd

One of the biggest tasks of those past months has also been to migrate our official server from the deprecated Metronome server to ejabberd. This migration contains more than 11 thousands accounts, thousands of articles, messages and relations.

Thanks to the ProcessOne team and especially Christophe Romain, Evgeny Khramtsov and Holger Weiß we greatly improved the script to migrate the data from one server to another and several features used by Movim after the migration.

ejabberd is now officially recommended by the Movim team. To make Movim fit perfectly with your server, please follow our ejabberd configuration page on our Wiki.

We are now close to having 300 simultaneously connected users on our official pods :)

    Help us!

For 9 years now, the Movim team and community is working freely to develop the platform and the related projects. We are also hosting the official pods to allow our users to enjoy Movim daily.

To continue to maintain and expand our infrastructure we are looking for your help. You can contribute by doing a one time donation on our Paypal account or on our official Patreon.

You can also help us by writing feedbacks about your experience with Movim, translate the project or help us debugging and improving the platform :)

You can find all the information on our official website.

    That’s all folks!
