Subscribers lodged thousands of complaints related to inaccuracies in Amazon's Prime Video catalog, including incorrect content and missing episodes, according to a Business Insider report this week. While Prime Video users aren't the only streaming users dealing with these problems, Insider's examination of leaked "internal documents" brings more perspective into the impact of mislabeling and similar errors on streaming platforms.

Insider didn't publish the documents but said they show that "60 percent of all content-related customer-experience complaints for Prime Video last year were about catalogue errors," such as movies or shows labeled with wrong or missing titles.

Specific examples reportedly named in the document include Season 1, Episode 2 of The Rings of Power being available before Season 1, Episode 1; character names being mistranslated; Continuum displaying the wrong age rating; and the Spanish-audio version of Die Hard With a Vengeance missing a chunk of audio.

Under the Bridge review – Lily Gladstone leads respectful yet bland true crime drama

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 2 days ago - 13:35 · 1 minute

The recent Oscar nominee plays a cop investigating the brutal death of a teen in this noble but clunky retelling of a horrifying crime on Hulu

As a true crime drama in the year 2024, Hulu’s Under the Bridge at least knows the giant potholes of the genre to avoid. The eight-episode limited series starring Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, an adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book on a sensational murder in Canada, knows not to glorify law enforcement as hyper-competent, or to privilege perpetrators’ emotional lives over a faceless victim’s, or to depict gratuitous violence. “I think people should be remembered for who they were, not what happened to them,” Keough, as Godfrey, tells the parents of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl horrifically beaten to death and drowned by both strangers and her so-called friends. As an exercise in how to make entertainment out of a real crime with real perpetrators and victims – particularly Virk, ably embodied by Vritika Gupta – Under the Bridge is self-aware and empathetic, clearly thinking through implications, its heart in the right place.

Unfortunately, as a television show, it often has the feeling of flat cola – tepid, stale and reminiscent of something buzzier and brighter. Though it assiduously dodges some of the worst of the so-called “dead girl” tropes, it falls prey to the most irksome ones of prestige streaming TV: bloated episode counts, multiple timelines, blurry formal shifts, portentous voiceovers, mistaking correct politics (on racism, incompetent law enforcement, trauma and more) for nuanced, compelling craft.

Freaknik: behind the wild party that became a cultural phenomenon

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 21 March - 13:13 · 1 minute

A new documentary looks back on the college cookout that turned into a defining event for Black students in Atlanta and beyond throughout the 80s and 90s

When Hulu announced plans to release a documentary on Freaknik late last year, the news landed more like a threat. “Freaknik aunties are shook,” read one Revolt TV headline. TMZ reported that an “older generation of ragers” was ”freaking out”. One TikToker who claimed to have attended several of the spring break festivals during its 90s heyday captured the prevailing mood among her peers. “I dunno, y’all,” she sighed, “we might be in trouble.” There was a genuine fear that rewinding the tape from that time could eviscerate the Black bourgeoisie, embarrassing scores of career professionals and public figures if the unearthed footage didn’t outright end their careers. A judge and politician were among five women who sued to stop the documentary from airing.

P Frank Williams, the director on the project, could relate. “Not to say people overreacted,” he says. “But the whole ‘people getting up in arms’ was a little bit funny and a little bit crazy at the same time. Ultimately, in the film, we tried our best to show that it was a fun, partying kind of time, but there were also a lot of cultural things that were going on as well.”

Hulu and Disney+ subscribers have until March 14 to stop sharing their login information with people outside of their household. Disney-owned streaming services are the next to adopt the password-crackdown strategy that has helped Netflix add millions of subscribers.

An email sent from "The Hulu Team" to subscribers yesterday and viewed by Ars Technica tells customers that Hulu is "adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household."

Hulu's subscriber agreement , updated on January 25, now states that users "may not share your subscription outside of your household," with household being defined as the "collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein."

An app combining the libraries of Disney+ and Hulu will launch in late March 2024, Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger said in a Q4 2023 earnings call on Wednesday night . The full app's release will follow the beta that launches in December.

Iger told investors that the beta will be available to US subscribers bundling their Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions and will give "parents time to set up profiles and parental controls that work best for their families ahead of the official launch," as per a transcription from The Motley Fool .

We first learned that Disney was planning a combined Disney+ and Hulu app in May when Disney owned two-thirds of Hulu. At the time, Iger called the unified app a "local progression" of Disney's consumer portfolio that would streamline content, boost audience engagement, and impress advertisers. Disney also pointed to potential cheaper customer acquisition costs. Wednesday's update follows Disney's announcement last week that it's buying the last third of Hulu , giving Disney total ownership.

Kingpin is back with a snazzy eyepatch in trailer for darker, bloody Echo

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 3 November - 19:59

Echo is the first Marvel project to feature a deaf protagonist and the first series to air all five episodes at once.

If, like us, you miss the darker, more adult-oriented Netflix Defenders series ( Jessica Jones , Daredevil , Luke Cage , Punisher ), you'll be intrigued by the official trailer for Echo , which seems to be channeling some of the same gritty energy. In fact, it's the first Marvel project to earn a TV-MA rating and the first to feature a deaf protagonist. In other firsts, Marvel will drop all five episodes at once on both Disney and Hulu.

    (Spoilers for Hawkeye below.)

We've already met Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka Echo, in Hawkeye . She was the deaf commander of the Tracksuit Mafia, capable of perfectly copying another person's movements. And she was on a quest to discover the true identity of Ronin, the assassin who had killed her father. That put her on a collision course with Clint Barton/Hawkeye, who had hung up his Ronin gear for good.
