Iceland volcanic eruption: barriers reinforced as lava flows towards town

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 17 March - 11:26

Flows pose danger to infrastructure in Grindavik, and hundreds of people are evacuated from nearby Blue Lagoon

Emergency teams worked through the night to bolster defensive barriers around the evacuated fishing town of Grindavik as lava from the fourth volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula since December again flowed towards it.

After weeks of warnings that semi-molten rock was building up under the ground, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said the eruption, at 8.23pm local time on Saturday, had opened a nearly 3km-long fissure in the earth between two mountains.

Driving Mum review – happy-sad Icelandic road movie hits the spot

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Tuesday, 27 February - 09:00

This quirky story of a lonely farmer and his deceased mother celebrates the Nordic country’s breathtaking landscape

This film hits just about every sweet spot possible: it is Icelandic and shot on black and white stock; it is a quirky road movie set in an unlikely place (Iceland); and it has a cute dog and features characters who knit. What is not love? If there had been cats and Ian McShane in a supporting role, it might have got five stars.

However, writer-director Hilmar Oddsson doesn’t need to pander to specific tastes because it’s clear he knows exactly what he’s doing with this happy-sad comedy-drama, a film that hovers on the emotional cusp between tones with consummate skill. The story unfolds in long, languid, static takes, signalling both a kind of arthouse melancholy that at the same time reads as faintly comical, setting up a frame for funny business to take place within its confines, provided the timing is just right.

‘You lied to us’: did the real-life saga behind Free Willy change the story for orcas in captivity?

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Saturday, 10 February - 12:00

Thirty years after the film highlighted their plight, thousands of whales and dolphins remain performing in entertainment parks

Anyone who grew up in the 1990s may well remember this movie scene: a 3.6-tonne orca leaping to freedom over a harbour wall and swimming off into the sunset with his family. It was the closing scene of Free Willy, a film that captured the hearts of a generation, telling the story of an orphaned boy racing against time to free a killer whale from captivity before the creature is destroyed.

It was 30 years ago this month that the film was released in the UK and it went on to spawn three sequels and a TV series. But it also helped to expose the dark side of orcas in captivity – not least the real-life story of Keiko , the whale who played Willy. Rescuing him took many years and millions of dollars – and even then the ending was not one that would have made the movie screens.

‘This is the end’: people who fled Icelandic volcano fear their town will not survive

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Saturday, 10 February - 06:00

Grindavík’s residents wrestle with uncertain future as they fear for the fate of homes, jobs and businesses left behind

As lava sprayed out of a volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula for the third time in as many months on Thursday, Sigurdur Enoksson felt the eruption spelled an end to his life in the town he had called home for three decades.

“This did it. I think we lost this battle,” said Sigurdur, who owns a family bakery employing 10 people in Grindavík. “After 29 years of having my bakery, I think this is the end. I think we are not coming back [to] Grindavík.” The latest eruption did not pose a direct threat to the town, but caused lava to hit water pipes in the region, affecting hot water supply for more than 20,000 people.
