Sales of new Tesla electric vehicles rose for the first quarter of 2023, according to sales and production figures released by the EV maker on Sunday. For the three months between the start of the year and the end of March, Tesla delivered 422,875 EVs; in 2022 they managed 310,048 deliveries during Q1.

That represents a 36 percent increase year on year for the EV company and a 4 percent increase from Q4 2022 .

As expected, the vast majority of its sales were split between the Models 3 and Y—Tesla does not break out details any further, nor does it report by regions. In Q1 2023 it delivered 412,180 Models 3 and Y, 5 percent of which were leased.

At a time when every other automaker is having trouble building enough electric vehicles to satisfy demand, Tesla is seemingly having the opposite problem. Overnight, the Texas-based automaker slashed prices by thousands of dollars for some models in an effort to spur demand. Earlier this month, the company's share price—which had already slumped by 70 percent in 2022—was further affected when Tesla announced it had missed its annual production goal by 20 percent .

Now, the cheapest Tesla you can buy—the Model 3 RWD—has dropped to $43,990, a $3,000 savings compared to 2022's prices . The Model 3 Long Range is currently unavailable, but the Model 3 Performance is $9,000 cheaper than before, at $53,990.

You can still buy a Model Y Long Range from Tesla, and in five-seat configuration, it's now $12,000 cheaper than yesterday, at $53,990. An even bigger discount applies to the Model Y Performance, which is now $13,000 cheaper, at $56,990. Adding a third row of seats to either of these Teslas carries a $4,000 premium.

On Monday evening, Tesla revealed its production and delivery numbers for Q4 2022 and the year as a whole. It was another record quarter for the American automaker, which built 439,701 electric vehicles and delivered 405,278.

The vast majority of these were split between Models 3 and Y—419,088 of those were built and 388,131 found customers, with just 20,613 Models S and X leaving the production line and only 17,147 of those finding homes.

That brings the automaker to a total of 1,369,611 EVs built and 1,313,851 EVs delivered in 2022. Again, the Models 3 and Y made up the lion's share: Tesla built 1,298,434 of these EVs and delivered 1,247,146 in 2022. The Models S and X accounted for 71,177 cars built and 66,705 cars delivered last year.
