Wii U, 3DS online servers to shut down in six months

The end is nigh for online network support on the aging Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms. Nintendo announced overnight that "online play and other functionality that uses online communication" on those consoles will stop working in "early April 2024," just over a year after Nintendo shut off downloadable game purchases on both platforms through the eShop.

In a brief FAQ , Nintendo clarified that players will still be able to redownload purchased software and download game update data "for the foreseeable future." Players will also still be able to transfer Pokémon off of a 3DS using the Pokémon Bank system after the planned shutdown. And software that uses the 3DS's unique Street Pass system will also still work since it uses local wireless communication between systems without the need for a central server.

While there are still some people using this now-classic Nintendo hardware online, spot tests suggest that the player numbers aren't huge these days. A GameXplain test from the beginning of 2023 found a handful of online players for Mario Kart 8 and Call of Duty games on Wii U, for instance, but failed to find opponents for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Mario Tennis Ultra Smash . A similar 3DS test by a YouTuber in January found similarly mixed results, though 3DS launch titles like Super Street Fighter 4 and Steel Divers still apparently had surprisingly strong online communities.

Did the UK government just accidentally leak Nintendo’s Switch successor?

The big old question mark just got a lot bigger...

As the Nintendo Switch approaches the sixth anniversary of its launch, Nintendo has been extremely coy about the prospects for a true successor to the console (no, the Switch OLED doesn’t count). This week, though, a stray redaction in a government document regarding the proposed Microsoft/Activision merger has some industry watchers speculating that the announcement of a Switch successor could be coming in the near future.

All that speculation focuses on a single line buried in 43 sprawling pages of appendices in a report from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, which recently came down against Microsoft's planned acquisition of Activision . In discussing services that could plausibly compete with the cloud-gaming features of Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, the appendix notes that Nintendo Switch Online "is only available on the Nintendo Switch device and [redacted]."

That telltale "and" is interesting, of course, because Nintendo Switch Online is currently only available on the Nintendo Switch (as the name implies). The CMA redaction following that "and" could easily describe a forthcoming console that Nintendo doesn't want formally announced via a regulatory filing (e.g., "...available on the Nintendo Switch device and [another console Nintendo is currently developing]").

Xbox Series X update allows more discs to be played fully offline

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 20 September, 2022 - 17:03

Xbox Series X update allows more discs to be played fully offline

Microsoft has quietly updated its Xbox Series X system software to remove the need for a one-time online check in before playing Xbox One discs and certain "Smart Delivery" cross-generation discs.

When we first wrote about this issue last May , we noted how the Series X hid the download of certain required config files behind a "Getting your game ready..." message during the first load of an affected disc-based game. If the system wasn't connected to the Internet, though, Series X users would be presented with a "This game isn't ready yet" error, completely preventing them from playing their disc-based game.

Fast forward to last week, when YouTuber Hikkomori Media noticed that the online check-in had apparently been removed. Discs that previously presented an error when run offline can now be installed and played directly from the disc, even if the system has no Internet connection.

How to Get the Most Out of Apple News Now That Facebook Is a No-Go

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Friday, 19 February, 2021 - 04:24 · 3 minutes

So, yesterday happened. And today we’re waking up in a new Facebook-news-free Australia. If you’d like to catch up on what exactly went down with the Australian media and Facebook yesterday, you can read about that here .

Today, however, I’d like to take a peek at one of the more popular news content aggregators out there, Apple News.

If you’re familiar with the service – awesome. If you’re new to it however and would like some insight into how best to use it, I’m here to help. I chatted with the team at Apple for a quick rundown on the app and got some tips on how to make sure you’re curating your news experience to suit your needs and preferences i.e. all Lifehacker, all the time (I’m joking).

    What’s Apple News?

In short, it’s a free new service through Apple that pulls together a selection of news pieces on current events. The collection is managed by Apple News editors, and it’ll shoot you nifty notifications to let you know when breaking news has hit.

    How about Apple News+?

Back in September 2019, Apple launched Apple News+ in Australia. This service is a paid subscription (you can sign up for $14.99 per month, after a one-month free trial) that pulls together the content from a solid chunk of popular magazines and newspapers. The platform will suggest articles based on your interests, and past reading habits.

If you’re signing up for the service, Apple recommends looking at an Apple One membership which bundles as many as six memberships including Apple Music, Apple TV, Arcade, iCloud, News and Fitness+ subscriptions. If you’re a fiend for an Apple service it may be worth considering. It’ll set you back $39.95 per month for all six, so crunch some numbers and see if it works out better for ya.

    Anyway, I digress.

How to use Apple News, properly

Just by using the Apple News app, the service will begin to learn about your preferences and will start making suggestions on what you may like. But the service is customisable.

If you have a particular topic or outlet you’d like to be kept across, head to the Following tab. From here you can use the search bar to find those favourites of yours. Tap the plus symbol to add them to your feed. Pretty simple stuff.

You can also block channels (outlets) or topics if you’re not keen on seeing stories from them. To do this, tap the “more” button (the ellipsis) next to the title or term, and select Block Channel/Topic.

Tap Following > Blocked Channels & Topics to see the channels and topics you’ve blocked.

It’s worth noting here that Apple states although you won’t see blocked content in your Today Feed, you may see articles pop up if they’re featured by editors elsewhere on the app.

Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the Following tab and click Discover Channels and Topics to find a selection of suggestions that you may not have thought of just yet.

If you’d like a super curated experience, you can also choose to only see news from pages and topics you follow in your daily news feed. For those who are very particular about what they read, you’ll want to head to Settings > News then turn on Restrict Stories in Today .

(These tips are tailored to iOS 14, so may be slightly different if you’re not using the latest operating system.)

    Tailor your notifications

Stick around in the Following tab if you’d like to manage how many notifications you receive from the app. Scroll down and select Notifications & Email , then use the toggle to edit which updates you get pinged about.

And there you have it. A quick and simple guide to getting your Apple News app in order. If you’d like advice on other news sources, check out our write up on the best ways to stay informed after Facebook’s Australian media ban.

How to Stay Updated with Australian News after the Facebook Ban

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Thursday, 18 February, 2021 - 01:51 · 4 minutes

So, it happened. Facebook has blocked news sites from publishing content to their Facebook pages.

This impacts both Australian news sites and international news content. So if you follow a news site on Facebook, very soon you won’t see posts from them anymore.

Now, the rise of digital media hasn’t meant the end of traditional news outlets. You can still tune in to the news programs on your television, buy a newspaper or listen to the radio. But for digital news outlets, social media has long been an easy way to share content with readers.

For some people who read their news via Facebook, this change could cause a big chance for your daily feed. But fear not; there are other ways you can still get content from your favourite sites. Here are some ideas to get you started.

    Social media

Facebook isn’t the only social media site with news content. Twitter has always been another great way to get Australian news and updates directly from news sites, celebrities, personalities and other organisations. You can create curated lists or follow hashtags for the topics and sites you’re interested in and you’ll still get a lot of the same content.

Instagram , while being more focused on images, is yet to be affected by the news ban despite being owned by Facebook. Plenty of news sites will post updates via Instagram which you can then access via a link in bio feature, so you don’t have to go too far from your regular feed to get your dose of news.

If you prefer to get your news from videos, YouTube is a viable option for news sites that also post video content. Plenty of news sites have also jumped on the TikTok train if you seek them out.

Reddit is also a great aggregator of content from news sites which you can find by joining groups with topics of similar interests to the news you’re interested in.

    News aggregators

Using a news aggregator is one of the easiest ways to stay on top of the latest news without doing any of the work. You can personalise the sites, topics or stories you’re interested in and the algorithm will do the rest.

Apple News and Google News are two of the most popular options. Apple News offers a subscription service to access certain stories behind the company paywalls but both aggregators offer both desktop and app-based options. Another popular choice is Feedly .

Alternatively, you can create your own RSS feed and manually add the sites you’re interested in to create a personalised news feed. This ensures you’ll never miss a post from your favourite site.

    Websites and apps

It goes without saying, but one way you can stay on top of Australian digital news is to visit the website itself. Whether you compile a list of links or bookmarks for the sites you enjoy reading or manually keep tabs on them throughout the day, this is still a viable way of keeping up with articles.

Certain news sites may also have their own apps on which they publish their content. ABC News App is an example of this on the Google Play and Apple App stores. Search the app store to see if your favourite site has a partner app handy as well and you’ll be able to set up notifications to ensure you never miss a post.

Lastly, most sites also have some form of a daily or weekly newsletter that you can sign up for through the website. This way you can get the best news articles delivered right to your email inbox without digging through websites each day.

    Podcasts

More often than not, your favourite news site will also have a podcast component that goes further in depth on the news of the day/week. Check your preferred podcasting platform for the news site or topic you’re interested in and there’s sure to be a podcast that will give you your news fix.

    How to find Lifehacker content

We here at Lifehacker Australia love bringing you articles each and every day. Sadly, if you’re used to seeing our content on Facebook, you probably won’t see it for much longer. We’d love for you to continue reading our articles and we have some solutions if you’re looking for ways to keep up with our content.

You can keep up with Lifehacker articles on our Twitter page and via our RSS feed . You can also sign up for our daily newsletter via the little ‘Subscribe’ icon at the top of our page, or find us right here at Lifehacker Australia !

Everything You Need To Know About Facebook’s Australian News Ban

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Wednesday, 17 February, 2021 - 22:53 · 2 minutes

As you’re likely aware at this point, Facebook has this morning (February 18) blocked Australian publishers from sharing news content on the platform, indefinitely.

The decision has come in response to the Australian government’s proposed legislation calling for payment from platforms like Facebook and Google for news content.

William Easton, Managing Director, Facebook Australia & New Zealand, announced the news in a blog post on February 17, 2021. In the post he wrote:

“In response to Australia’s proposed new Media Bargaining law, Facebook will restrict publishers and people in Australia from sharing or viewing Australian and international news content.”

“The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content. It has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia. With a heavy heart, we are choosing the latter.”

What does this mean for you?

If you head to your Facebook account, you may not notice that much has changed at first glance. But you will likely find that all of the pages attached to your favourite news outlets have been wiped. While some have found workarounds, like our friends at Gizmodo here , and it appears outlets (like us at Lifehacker Australia) still have the ability to post from Facebook Creator Studio, audiences have seemingly lost all ability to engage with the content news creators are sharing to the social media platform.

If you’re a Facebook user, you will no longer be able to see or share news stories and if you are an international consumer of Australian news, you too will lose the ability to view or share Australian news content.

    What about Google?

There has been much discussion of late about Google’s threat to similarly pull the plug on Aussie news outlets – with the search engine suggesting it may remove the search function for Australians entirely.

However, as SBS reports, Google has been in negotiations with Australian news publishers in recent weeks, signing new deals relating to news dissemination and pay.

    What’s next?

For the moment, there’s no clear guide as to when or if this Facebook block will ease. Aussie audiences will have to shift the way they consume their news updates, at least for the moment, it seems.

Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg tweeted this morning that he and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had a “constructive discussion”. He shared that Zuckerberg “raised a few remaining issues with the Government’s news media bargaining code and we agreed to continue our conversation to try to find a pathway forward”.

So, I suppose for now: watch this space.

The Best NBN 100 Plans on Offer Right Now

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Wednesday, 10 February, 2021 - 22:00 · 4 minutes

If you’re after an NBN 100 plan but still want to save a bit of cash, you’re in luck. There’s a whole host of providers currently offering discounts on their fastest widely available plans.

Most of these take the form of a timed offer – you’ll pay a reduced rate for your first six months and get bumped up to the full price thereafter – but there are other options around too.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the best NBN 100 deals available .

SpinTel currently has one of the cheapest NBN 100 deals around, where you’ll pay just $74 per month for your first six months. You’ll pay $84.95 per month thereafter, but that’s still very reasonable for an NBN 100 plan. Most are billed at about $90 per month. Of course, the plan is contract-free so you’re free to leave whenever and get a deal from one of these other providers.

SpinTel does however also have speed going for it. It now reports typical evening speeds of 90Mbps, which puts it in the upper echelon of providers when it comes to peak hour performance on NBN 100 plans.

Tangerine has a pretty similar deal. You’ll pay $74.90 per month for your first six months, and $89.90 per month thereafter. Once again, the plan is contract-free, but Tangerine also compounds this with a 14-day risk-free trial. If you find yourself unhappy during your first two weeks, you can leave and get your plan fees refunded. You won’t be able to get a refund for your modem if you purchase one through Tangerine, but it will work with any other NBN provider.

Tangerine’s evening speeds are a hair slower than what you’ll get on SpinTel, reporting 83Mbps on NBN 100 plans. This deal is available until February 28.

Superloop is once again hair more expensive, charging $74.95 per month for your first six months, and $89.95 per month thereafter. In both cases, that’s only 5 cents more per month than Tangerine. Superloop does however report faster evening speeds, measuring in at 90Mbps during busy periods. Superloop’s deal runs until the end of July.

TPG recently upped its NBN 100 plan evening speeds to 95Mbps, making it the third fastest provider around, tied with stablemate iiNet. Better yet, TPG has its own discount offer. You’ll pay $79.99 for your first six months, and $89.99 per month thereafter. You’ll need to commit to a six-month contract to get this one, but you’re still free to leave as soon as your discount expires.

Aussie Broadband also upped its NBN 100 evening speeds recently and is now reporting an impressive 99Mbps. That puts it in second place, 1Mbps behind Telstra’s claim of 100Mbps. Aussie is offering $10 per month off for your first six months with the promo code FAST10. This means you’ll pay $89 per month initially and $99 per month thereafter. Aussie Broadband’s plans are contract-free.

Vodafone has a similar offer going. You’ll save $10 per month on your first six months, bringing your bill down to $85 per month. That becomes $95 per month thereafter. While that’s a little bit pricier than most NBN providers, you can bring down your bill by bundling with other Vodafone services.

Vodafone will slash 5% off your total bill for every postpaid plan you have on your account after the first, up to a maximum of 20%. For example, bundling a Vodafone NBN plan with two Vodafone phone plans would cut 10% from your bill. Tablet and mobile plans are also eligible for discount bundles.

Vodafone’s NBN plans are contract-free. However, if you take up Vodafone’s optional modem, you’ll need to pay out the remaining value if you leave in your first 36 months. This is equivalent to $5 per month left in your three-year term.

MATE will also reward loyalty with cheaper prices. You’d normally pay $79 per month for a MATE NBN 100 plan, but you can shave $10 per month by also taking up one of the company’s SIM-only plans. MATE mobile plans are powered by the Telstra network, and start at $20 per month for 5GB. The $25 per month option with 18GB is a better pick, however. Once again, MATE’s NBN plans are contract-free.

Dodo has a bundle offer of its own. As it stands, you can save $10 per month on its NBN 100 plan for your first six months. This means you’ll pay $75 per month for your first six months and $85 per month thereafter. You can also save a further $10 per month for the length of your plan if you also switch your gas and energy to Dodo. Just be aware that you’ll need to commit to a 12-month term to get this deal, or pay a $120 upfront modem fee.

Click Frenzy 2021: Everything You Need To Know

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Tuesday, 9 February, 2021 - 06:15 · 4 minutes

We may be a little early to the party but it’s never too early to start thinking about Click Frenzy 2021. Originally launched back in 2012, the major shopping event has firmly established itself as one of Australia’s must watch sale events – and it’s gearing up for a big one.

To help you get ready for the huge sale event, we’ve put together a handy guide on when the big sale event will be kicking off, and what kind of deals you can expect during the day.

Here are some of the best deals from last year to give you an idea of what to expect:

    When does Click Frenzy start?

The first unofficial Click Frenzy is for Valentine’s Day and runs until February 14. A quick glance at the websites’ calendar tells us the first official event will be Click Frenzy Travel which kicks off at 7pm on the 20th April. Next up is Click Frenzy Mayhem on the 18th May, followed by Click Frenzy Julove on the 13th July. The Main Event will end out the year on the 9th November with a huge cyber weekend showcase. As you can see, there’s a lot in store and we’re all kinds of excited to see exactly what Click Frenzy sales will be available.

Click Frenzy 2021 deals: What to expect

Some of the best deals during last year’s main event included video game consoles for $4 and Apple AirPods for $3. In other words, you could level up your life with cool new gadgets that cost less than lunch with your friends at Maccas.

The 53-hour main event also saw many different items priced at 99% off. Past sales have included TVs, premium headphones, gift cards, drones and more. However, these are the blink-and-you-will-miss-them sales that literally last for a few seconds. In other words, don’t get your hopes up.

    Which retailers are taking part?

The list of retailers is impressive. The Click Frenzy homepage lists dozens of retailers covering sporting goods through to tech. Pretty much every retailer you can think of is covered. Pet supplies, cosmetics, fashion — you name it and there’s probably a deal already available.

How to get the best deals

Of course, trying to nab a product for 99% off isn’t easy and stock is, expectedly, limited. Just look at the tales of misery and woe from previous years , with many missing out. That’s because there are a very specific set of rules you have to follow to make sure you can get the insane prices and they’re only available for a very, very short time. I’m talking less than 30 seconds here, people.

You have to be real quick. More than that though — here’s the most important things to do to set yourself up better:

    1. Be a Click Frenzy subscriber.
That means heading to the Click Frenzy homepage and whacking your name, email address and one of the two gender options they provide in the boxes provided. Easy enough.

Subscribers will receive a series of emails over the 24-hour period. Going on past efforts, each email will instruct you as to where and when you need to head to certain Click Frenzy pages. You won’t get an exact time. Take a look at a previous image to get a feel for what you need to look for in the email.

As you can see, you need to be in a particular section of the Click Frenzy site. During that time, a banner will appear that has a code written on the front. Remember that. You don’t have time to write it down. Click the banner and you’ll be ready to pay.

    2. Turn off your adblockers.
If you’re using an adblocker, you will need to turn it off. The banner that appears on the webpage is a ‘pop-up’ and blockers such as AdBlock will prevent that from appearing. If you can’t see it, you can’t click it.

    3. Payment options.
Purchases will be made directly through the retailer’s website so payment options will vary across the board. Each brand page on the Click Frenzy website will give you a heads up on the forms of payment that will be accepted.

    4. Purchase limits.
There are likely to be limits on how many terms you can purchase, particularly with the big 99% off deals. So, saving $99 on a $100 gift card mightn’t be as good as saving thousands on a new TV. Don’t get trigger happy with the first deal you see.

Affordable NBN Plans That Cost Less Than $60 a Month

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Wednesday, 3 February, 2021 - 22:09 · 4 minutes

Entry-level NBN plans aren’t as common as they used to be, with many providers focusing on pricier products with high speeds and unlimited data. These plans aren’t for everyone. Not everyone wants or needs an expensive NBN plan, of course.

What if you just want to binge a little Netflix without paying for more than it feels like you’re using? What if you don’t have the need for speed? Fortunately, there are still plenty of options if you’re looking for a cheaper NBN plan. Here’s a look at what less than $60 per month will get you.

    NBN 25 plans under $60

If you’re after a more affordable NBN plan, you may need to make some trade-offs. You’ll typically need to sacrifice your download speed or your data allowance, which is why we’re starting with NBN 25 plans. They’re the easiest way to get an NBN plan under $60.

Tangerine has one of the cheapest unlimited NBN 25 plans around right now. You’ll pay $44.90 per month for your first six months, and then $59.90 per month thereafter. The plan is contract-free so you can leave whenever, and it also comes with a 14-day risk-free trial. If you’re not happy within your first fortnight, Tangerine will give you a full refund of your plan fees. Tangerine’s discount is available until February 28.

SpinTel has a similar deal where you’ll pay $49 per month for your first six months, and then $59.95. This gets you a NBN 25 plan with unlimited data. If you want to stick to a sub-$50 price point after your discount expires, SpinTel also has a 100GB NBN 25 plan for $49.95 per month if you can make do with a smaller allowance.

Superloop is also offering a discount on NBN 25 plans, where you’ll pay $54.95 for your first six months and $59.95 per month thereafter. This deal is available until July 31.

MATE and MyRepublic both have unlimited data NBN 25 plans for under $60 per month that aren’t subject to promotional pricing. The pair of plans are priced at $59 per month, with MATE reporting slightly faster typical evening speeds.

If you go with MATE, you can save a further $10 per month by also picking up one of the telco’s SIM-only plans for your phone. MATE’s mobile plans are powered by the Telstra network and start at $20 per month with 5GB. The $25 per month plan with 18GB is a much better deal, however.

If bundling is your jam, you may want to consider Vodafone. Vodafone is currently offering an unlimited NBN 25 plan for $55 per month for your first six months and then $65 per month thereafter. While that’s a little bit pricier, Vodafone offers a 5% discount on your total monthly bill for every additional postpaid service on your account, up to a maximum of 20% if you have five services. This includes mobile, mobile broadband, and tablet plans.

    NBN 50 plans under $60

Your options become a little more limited if you’re looking for a NBN 50 plan under $60 per month.

Tangerine is one of the cheapest options under $60 per month thanks to a promotional discount. You’ll pay $54.90 per month for your first six months, and $69.90 per month thereafter. Once again, the plan is contract-free, so you can always leave when the discount runs out.

Belong has an unlimited data NBN 50 plan for $55 per month, however there’s a catch. While it’s technically an NBN 50 plan, speeds are capped to 30Mbps. That’s a little bit better than NBN 25, but a good much slower than an NBN 50 plan – even during peak hours.

You’ll need to sign a 12-month contract to get this one, but Belong will throw in $80 of mobile credit to use if you also feel like changing phone plans. If you’d prefer to go contract-free, you can pay $60 per month instead. You’ll also need to pay a $60 modem fee.

There are also a whole host of other providers with promotional discounts that bring their plans in under $60 per month for your initial six-month period.

SpinTel is the cheapest at full price, offering $59 per month for your first six months and $64.95 per month thereafter. Superloop follows with $59.95 per month for your first six months and $69.95 per month thereafter. And Internode is the most expensive at full price, charging $59.99 per month for your first six months, and $79.99 per month thereafter.

In every case, you’re able to leave as soon as your discount runs out – Internode does make you stay for the entire initial six-month period, however. And of course, when can always swap to another discounted provider as soon as your introductory pricing expires.

Dodo also has its own promotional discount: you’ll pay $60 per month for your first six months, and $70 per month thereafter. However, Dodo will cut a further $10 from your bill if you bundle your NBN with its gas and energy.
