Death Carnival shows off the absolutely insane PvP mode / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 16 December, 2021 - 20:07 · 1 minute

Death Carnival (previously known as BulletRage) is still in progress and a new trailer has just been shown off giving a little look into the PvP mode it will have. This is a game that has stuck with me for some time, after playing through their older demo when it was BulletRage it was pretty immense.

What is it? A fast-paced arcade shooter with extreme weapons, wall-dashing and intense mid-air combat in online multiplayer action format like never before. Use the environment to discover new ways to destroy your enemies, and customize load-outs with the weapon socket system. Choose from over a dozen characters each with unique attacks and story campaigns. Enjoy the adrenaline-fuelled combat in single player, online co-op, or competitive PvP.

In a future world, broken by war, humanity survives in a few overcrowded cities. To escape their bleak reality, many turn to televised blood sports, the most popular being Death Carnival. In this deadly game show, contestants must battle against hordes of enemies and machines for fame and fortune on live TV.

Speaking about the new video above, Herbert Yung the Director at Furyion Games said "We wanted to create something that had the depth of first-person shooters, ramped up freedom of movement, and translated to a style of gameplay that was extremely easy to pick up and play. Whether you're a casual player, or a top competitive gamer, the easy controls and game mechanics will feel intuitive.

In the trailer you will see some players who are new testers, but were able to quickly jump in and get the hang of the game quickly. They were able to perform incredible feats of destruction like dashing up a ramp, flying through the air, and shooting at unsuspecting enemies below. I hope you will enjoy this trailer, as much as we have loved pouring our heart and soul into the project."

Game Features:

  • Multiple exciting PvP game modes
  • Easy arcade-style controls with fast-paced combat
  • 10+ characters and classes to choose from
  • Weapon Socket System to customize weapons with collected loot
  • Story campaign solo or 4 players couch/online co-op
  • Spanning multiple worlds and arenas
  • Giant boss fights and plenty of endgame replay
  • Cross-platform, cross-progression, will be available on most platforms

Valheim gets christmassy, armour stands and silences tamed wolves / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 16 December, 2021 - 13:43 · 1 minute

Iron Gate have given Valheim players an early Christmas present with a fresh update adding in a couple of seasonal bits and some free content.

Do you have lots of wolves tamed? Good noise, they will no longer annoy the heck out of you by howling constantly. Troll animations were overhauled, tamed animals have decided they like fire now, there's a profanity filter for the server list, a new armour stand to show off what you've got and a Yule tree! You can even craft little present boxes that act like tiny storage chests - how sweet.

To actually get new items to show up in your list, you need to go do some gathering as it will make the game wake up and give you it all. It confused me today when trying it, as I couldn't find any of the new stuff until I picked up a few bits of fresh materials.

Plenty of other improvements came along like some locational music tweaks, drop and spawn tweaks for the Abomination, localization updates and enabled clipping check when placing thrones.

Valheim is available to buy on Humble Store or Steam .

HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed dev answer a few questions for their Steam Deck support / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 15 December, 2021 - 11:49 · 2 minutes

Somewhat recently, developer Digital Cybercherries mentioned that HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed will have great support for the Steam Deck, so we had a few burning questions. Thankfully, they were happy to have a chat about it!

What is it? Hypercharge: Unboxed is a classic-style third and first-person shooter inspired by Toy Story and Small Soldiers. It focuses on wave-based shooting with defense building mechanics. You must complete the mission of Sgt. Max Ammo and prevent the HYPER-CORE from being destroyed.

GOL: First it’s the obvious question: how did you find supporting Linux / Steam Deck with HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed? What specific things did you have to change for it?

"Supporting Linux was easy. We already had a sizeable chunk of the game working and tested on Linux for our dedicated servers, so development was mostly focused on the visual and input side of things. Supporting the Steam Deck has been a slight challenge at the moment due to it being new technology and having to learn the quirks of a new platform and how we test/develop the game with code debugging, game performance debugging and shader output. We have not had to change much about the game to support Linux and Steam Deck offers similar controls to the Nintendo Switch, so support was easy."

GOL: Since HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed has online play, have you tested it working cross-platform?

"Yes, cross platform between Windows and Switch has always been supported for our Server, so the networking cross-platform side is well tested already."

GOL: Will you be supporting it on Linux before the Steam Deck releases? Or will you be waiting for it?

"We are still deciding when to release the Linux build, it may come with one of the future large updates/patches."

GOL: Do you expect the Steam Deck to help sales of HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed?

"More players and more support are always welcome, but for us, the primary aim is to ensure as many people on as many platforms as possible can play our game. It works so well on the Switch already that the Steam Deck version will be the best hand-held way to play the game."

GOL: Do you think the Steam Deck will really change PC gaming? It may be a handheld console, but it’s usable just like a PC when hooked up.

"Yes, we hope it will have an impact. Our experience with the Devkit has been incredibly positive, and I think there is always room for more 'open' consoles."

GOL: Anything you want to tell our readers about HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed?

"There are not enough split-screen co-operative shooters, especially on Linux, and I hope we can help fix that."

Thanks to Digital Cybercherries for answering our few quick-questions! This is one game I'm personally looking forward to playing whenever we manage to get a Steam Deck after the delay.

You can find HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed on Steam .

Blast through a comic book online in the latest Fury Unleashed update / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 16 November, 2021 - 17:23 · 1 minute

Fury Unleashed, a modern action-platformer that has an awesome style to it recently had a huge upgrade finally bringing with it online co-op support. Taking inspiration from other rogue-lite platformers including Dead Cells and Rogue Legacy with a little explosive flair from Contra and Metal Slug it certainly delivers.

One of the key points of interest in Fury Unleashed is how you're playing through a living comic book, with ink being your main valuable resource. Each room you blast through is a different panel from this comic.

Release at the end of October was the big free online co-op upgrade for the game. Trailer is below:

Other fixes that came with the update include:

  • Addition of the controller vibration with different preset modes included. Try it out, it's awesome!
  • The Save & Quit feature can now be used in every game mode, that includes Online Co-Op.
  • In co-op modes, combo time is now increased by 50% while both players are alive.
  • Difficulty spike reduction tweaks for the second and third page of the first comic-book world.
  • The shield of enemies that wield it, can now be pierced, blocking 60% of damage (from 100%).
  • More improvements to translations, with support for the new online-related lines.
  • Another set of minor improvements and bug-fixes to both co-op modes.

Available on Humble Store and Steam . The GOG release does not support online on Linux, due to it needing GOG Galaxy.

On top of that, they've begun working on their next game. They haven't formally announced it or even said what it's called but they did give us a little teaser:
