China-owned TikTok’s been living rent-free in many American lawmakers’ minds all year. Some lawmakers—who have been monitoring US tensions with China and coping with growing concerns that TikTok in its current form shouldn’t be trusted with millions of Americans’ data—reached a breaking point this December. In the past few weeks, many state and federal agencies introduced and passed various laws , campaigning hard to remove the popular short-video app from US devices.

It looks like the US could end up following through on Donald Trump’s thwarted 2020 plan to ban TikTok nationwide.

Possibly the only thing potentially keeping TikTok operating in the US has been an elusive deal that President Joe Biden’s administration is discussing with TikTok—a deal that just days ago, The New York Times reported , included terms that were “unlikely to satisfy anyone.” Now, Reuters has released an exclusive report , revealing new details about the terms of Biden’s deal and providing the first glimmer of hope for Americans increasingly worried that their TikTok access might soon be revoked.

In a press conference that Ars attended today, Department of Defense officials discussed the benefits of partnering with Google, Oracle, Microsoft, and Amazon to build the Pentagon’s new cloud computing network. The multi-cloud strategy was described as a necessary move to keep military personnel current as technology has progressed and officials’ familiarity with cloud technology has matured.

Air Force Lieutenant General Robert Skinner said that this Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) contract—worth $9 billion—would help quickly expand cloud capabilities across all defense departments. He described new accelerator capabilities like preconfigured templates and infrastructure as code that will make it so that even “people who don’t understand cloud can leverage cloud” technologies. Such capabilities could help troops on the ground easily access data gathered by unmanned aircraft or space communications satellites.

“JWCC is a multiple-award contract vehicle that will provide the DOD the opportunity to acquire commercial cloud capabilities and services directly from the commercial Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) at the speed of mission, at all classification levels, from headquarters to the tactical edge,” DOD’s press release said.

Oracle Java popularity sliding, New Relic reports

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom · Thursday, 28 April, 2022 - 10:00 edit

While still the industry’s leading Java distribution, Oracle Java’s popularity is half what it was just two years ago, according to a report from application monitoring company New Relic.

The finding was included the company’s 2022 State of the Java Ecosystem report, released April 26, which is based on data culled from millions of applications providing performance data to New Relic. Among Java Development Kit (JDK) distributions, Oracle had roughly 75% of the market in 2020, but just 34.48% in 2022, New Relic reported. Not far behind was Amazon , at 22.04%, up from 2.18% in 2020.

Cloud costs a lot of money

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom · Wednesday, 3 November, 2021 - 10:00 edit

As the old adage goes, you’ve got to spend money to make money. With regard to public cloud success, this certainly feels true. Google, Microsoft, and AWS all reported earnings recently, and each announced significant spending on data centers and more (capital expenditures), while also announcing significant growth in cloud revenue. Meanwhile, cloud vendors like Oracle that weren’t able (or willing) to invest as heavily continue to lag in cloud market share and growth.

Although it may be too strong to suggest that big spending is a causal factor in netting big returns, it’s perhaps telling that AWS spent much more than its cloud peers and saw revenue growth jump 10% over the last year. Causation? Maybe. Correlation? Definitely.

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Friday, 5 March, 2021 - 12:49 · 2 minutes

    install virtualbox on linux

Virtual Machines are software used to run other operating systems within a pre-installed operating system. This self-contained OS runs as a separate computer that has no relation to the host OS. VirtualBox is an open-source cross-platform software that can help you run multiple guest operating systems on a single computer. In this article, let’s look at how to install VirtualBox 6.1 on Linux, easily.

    Why Install VirtualBox?

One of the most important use cases of VirtualBox is its ability to try out/test various operating systems without fiddling with your internal storage. VirtualBox creates a virtual environment that utilizes system resources like RAM and CPU to power the OS inside a container.

For example, if I want to try out and check if the latest Ubuntu release is stable or not, I can use VirtualBox to do it and only then decide if I want to install it or just totally use it in VirtualBox. This not only saves me a lot of time but also makes the process flexible.

How To Install VirtualBox 6.1 On Ubuntu/Debian/Linux Mint?

If you already have an older version of VirtualBox installed, remove it first. Fire up the terminal and type the following command:

    $ sudo dpkg -r virtualbox

To install VirtualBox on Ubuntu/Ubuntu-based, Debian, Linux Mint distributions, head over to the official VirtualBox download page .

Download the appropriate VirtualBox .deb file by clicking on the links.

After the download’s complete, click on the .deb file and the software installer will install VirtualBox for you.
