Consumer-grade virtual reality was still in its infancy in 2016 when Sony decided it should be on the leading edge of the charge . The first PlayStation VR headset sold relatively well compared to its early PC VR competition and quite well compared to other console accessories. But over the last six years, Sony has largely let its first console VR experiment wither on the vine, allowing competitors to advance the state of the art with frequent hardware and software updates.
Now that we're firmly in the PS5 era, Sony is back to prove it hasn't completely forgotten about its virtual reality market. The PlayStation VR2 headset shows all the refinements you'd expect from years of technological advancement and throws in a few nice features that aren't standard among the competition, to boot. Despite those improvements, though, the PSVR2 still feels like a by-the-numbers, too-little-too-late attempt by Sony to keep its foot in a niche it might not be fully committed to.
The PSVR2 does away with the ludicrous mess of wires, junction boxes, power plugs, and cameras that came to define the original PSVR . As we discussed in our unboxing impressions , the newer headset features a single USB-C cable that plugs directly into the front of a PS5. That means you're not left with a clutter of equipment by your entertainment center if you leave the headset plugged in, and it's not a major hassle to get connected if you want to put the PSVR2 back in the box between sessions.
Out of the box: Ars’ first impressions of the PSVR2 hardware

The overall color and design scheme means there's no mistaking that this is a PlayStation 5 accessory.
This week, well over six years since we last opened a virtual reality headset from Sony , the PlayStation VR2 has arrived at the Ars Orbiting HQ. And while our full review of the hardware and software will have to wait until next week, we can give you some general first impressions of the out-of-the-box fit and finish right now.
Anyone who remembers the mess of wires and junction boxes included with the original PSVR headset will marvel at just how little is included in the PSVR2 box. There's the headset itself, of course—with its single USB-C connector permanently attached—alongside two specially made PSVR2 hand-tracking controllers (finally replacing the downright ancient PlayStation Move controllers that had been adapted for the original PSVR's hand-tracking). There's no more fiddling with a maze of connections or hooking up a separate camera to your console—the new hardware has a plug-and-play simplicity that was sorely lacking in 2017.
The box also includes a specially designed set of earbuds, which are set inside a solid band that clips onto the back of the PSVR2 head strap. The loose, wired earbuds hang off the sides of the device just far enough to fit into your ears and slot into a couple of head strap divots when not in use.

PSVR 2 launch includes only a handful of exclusive titles

Enlarge / Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain is one of the few exclusive titles available for next month's PSVR 2 launch.
Those who purchase the PlayStation VR 2, available next month, won't be able to play their existing PSVR library on the new headset . But they will be able to purchase more than 30 titles on the headset's February 22 launch and a total of 37 within a month of that launch, Sony announced today .
The initial PSVR 2 lineup is overwhelmingly a sort of "greatest hits" collection of titles available on existing VR platforms. Almost all of the headset's launch window titles are also available on SteamVR, the Oculus Quest platform, or the original PSVR.
Of the handful of PSVR 2 exclusives, the previously revealed Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain stands out as a first-person adventure in the vein of Half-Life: Alyx . As far as third-party exclusives, Supermassive's The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR is an on-rails VR roller-coaster akin to the similar Until Dawn: Rush of Blood , while Fantavision 202X is a fully 3D take on the infamous, fireworks-filled PS2 launch title (and will also work without a headset).
