Relic Space shows off its very satisfying space roguelike gameplay in a demo / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 6 January, 2022 - 15:23 · 1 minute

Love space sci-fi and roguelikes? Relic Space blends them together and it's really beginning to look like a game that's going to steal endless hours away from me.

Relic Space is a turn-based, roguelike RPG in which you help rebuild civilisation following a galactic catastrophe. Through varied missions as a single starship pilot you will engage in deeply simulated, hex-based combat with an innovative, fluid feel - all set within an epic sci-fi narrative that you help construct through your choices. A bit like Jupiter Hell, the movement is so fluid you often don't remember it's taking a turn each time.

The developer put up a public demo recently and it's really come along, with a couple of hours gameplay available it gives a great look into the game. Heavily inspired by traditional roguelikes, the developer mentions they wish to "break new ground with the variety and complexity of randomly generated missions, and their associated subplots". While it will have a main story campaign, it sounds like there's going to be a lot you can replay through and have it all be different each time.

You can check out the new demo on and follow on Steam .

Wilderness survival roguelike Wayward "Horizons" upgrade brings Volcanic islands / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 6 January, 2022 - 14:55 · 3 minutes

Another major update has landed for the sweet top-down wilderness survival roguelike Wayward, bringing with it a whole new Volcanic island type and much more.

The game will also now load up several islands at a time, which helps with quicker travel and means players in multiplayer can actually be on different islands now - so it opens the game up a whole lot more. Have a look at the Horizons upgrade release trailer below:

New features highlight:

  • Added a new "islands" dialog, acting as a world map. It's unlocked when obtaining a sea-worthy vessel, which allows you to travel to inspect and travel to nearby islands.
  • You can now sail to any island within a certain distance, the travel time and cost dependant on the distance traveled.
  • Several islands can now be loaded at a time, allowing for quicker travel and allowing players in multiplayer games to be on different islands from each other.
  • Added a new "Seafaring" skill which increases travel distances, reduces hunger and thirst costs when traveling, and more.
  • Added a new "Volcanic" island type and biome with new resources, tiles, interactions, and creatures.
  • Added the ability to assign quickslots with tool-based actions (similar to "Carve with Tool" previously from the action menu). Alternatively, you can perform actions here by opening a new menu as well with "Shift + Q or Shift + Right Click". These actions will automatically pick the best tool for the given action.
  • Added ability to assign action menu actions to the quickslot bar.
  • A new item quality, "Relic", has been added. Relics have a high amount of magical properties, but have low starting durability and are dropped exclusively from aberrant creatures and treasure chests.
  • Added a "Rejoin as a new player" button to the death screen when dying in multiplayer games that have "clear ghost data on leave" option enabled.
  • Added a "Respawn in Casual Mode" button to the death screen when you die while in a permadeath mode so you can continue playing your save.
  • Merchant NPCs will now spawn and restock based on the number of buildings (walls/floors) constructed on an island, and will decrease in odds the further out you are from your starting island.
  • Added a couple of new craftable "scarecrows" that you can place down to prevent or reduce the likelihood of creatures spawning and/or movement around them (depending on the creature).
  • Added a new armor set of "armored scale" with unique properties/usefulness.
  • Added needles for all types of metal.
  • Added a pangolin creature to the new "Volcanic" island type.
  • Added mysterious and coveted "Dryad", a plant-like creature with unique properties and loot.
  • Added "Master of All" milestone and milestone modifier for getting all skills to 100%.
  • Added the "Traitor" milestone and milestone modifier.
  • Added a new form of grass called "Tanglehead", spread throughout the arid and volcanic islands types. Dirt will no longer be native to arid islands as a result.
  • Added a new magical property "Regeneration", which repairs/restores durability on items over time.
  • Added a new magical property, "Aptitude", which multiplies its effectiveness in crafts.
  • Added a new interaction with wisps.
  • The main menu buttons and tabs across all menus now have associated icons to improve UX.
  • Sailing to new islands now raises your cartography skill.
  • Starting at 40% cartography skill, the islands map and item tooltips now show which map items are associated with each island.
  • Introduced the concept of spores to mushrooms and ferns.
  • There are now non-tattered versions of shirts and pants that are available to craft.
  • Added an "Open Backups Folder" button to the save data section in the options menu.
  • You can now drag and drop save files onto the game to import them.
  • Added +dev command line switch to dedicated servers to enable developer mode.

You can grab Wayward on Humble Store and Steam .

"Every decade, the Mka tribe sends caravans of adventurers into the Phithi, the meteorological chaos that keeps the Uwando tribes isolated from each other and makes life outside the refuges almost impossible.

Their mission: to establish diplomatic and trade relations, to explore and reclaim the lands left to the mercy of monsters and pirates, and, most importantly, to plant a new tree city that can become a refuge for the Mka and their allies. Regardless of the success or failure of their mission, the caravans must send the memories they have gained back to the capital, using the crystospheres carried by traveling beetles."

Game Features:

  • Guide a caravan of adventurers through ever-changing landscapes.
  • Fight and survive in the face of acid rain, sandstorms and heat waves.

    Loop Hero from Four Quarters hits a million sales / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 9 December, 2021 - 14:05 · 1 minute

Looks like publisher Devolver Digital was right to back this one, as Loop Hero from developer Four Quarters has managed to hit a million sales on Steam.

A game all about repetition. Loop Hero sees you constantly run through a procedurally generated map, where your character automatically walks around and engages in battle with various creatures. It's also a deck-builder, although you deck are map tiles so you build up the map from a blank slate with each loop. It's deliciously addictive to keep playing through while it reveals small bits of story.

Since release it's had numerous patches, including a big first content update back in June that added these features:

  • Save On The Go: The new update features an option to save and exit the game in the middle of an expedition, preserving your progress.
  • Perks Deck: A new option that locks boss perks so they don't drop in the expedition perk pool.
  • Speed Up: The speed button now includes up to 4x expedition speed and 2.5x battle speed.
  • Inventory Management: Items can now be locked in the inventory by right-clicking on them.
  • Deck Switching: Decks can now be switched in the cards, supplies, and perks menus.
  • New Tiles, New Enemies: Three new tiles and three new enemies have been added to the game, but it’s up to heroes to find them...

We do expect more to come along, as the developer has been teasing little things on their Twitter. Nice to see a quality Linux game do well.

Merging a roguelike with monster catching, Siralim Ultimate is out now / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 6 December, 2021 - 12:16 · 1 minute

With thousands of unique creatures, plenty of dungeons to explore and roguelike mechanics, Siralim Ultimate definitely looks like a game you can spend a lot of time with and enjoy. A game that the developer says is a bit like "Pokemon meets Diablo, or more accurately, Dragon Warrior Monsters meets Path of Exile".

It might not be on par with more modern-looking games, with it low-resolution pixel-art but don't let that put you off. There's a ridiculous amount of depth to this one that roguelike fans will no doubt love if they give it a go.

City of Gold update for Stoneshard is out now / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 6 December, 2021 - 11:53 · 2 minutes

City of Gold brings some pretty big changes and feature additions to Stoneshard, the challenging turn-based RPG set in an open world.

Some of the smaller things that came with this update include: a new special beginner quest, new enemies, new Steam Achievements, new throwables, reworked dungeon progression and plenty of tweaks to various parts of the game. Some of the bigger changes include:

  • Global Map and Rumor System - The size of the game’s world has grown almost 10 times - from 17x10 tiles to 40x40. You’ll be able to track your journey across it with a new global map menu that will also feature a character marker. On your travels you’ll have a chance to encounter many Points of Interest, including monster dens and a handful of new unique locations.
  • Brynn - The first major city will open its gates before you. It consists of four separate districts, each with their own vibe and special traders.
  • Saving on Exit - Your progress is now saved automatically upon exiting the game. However, these saves are deleted upon loading, so in case of your character’s death, you’ll be brought to the latest “hard” save made by sleeping.
  • Rumor System - Instead of being marked on the map from the get-go, Points of Interests are now discovered by learning rumors about them. You’ll be able to learn gossip and news from certain characters - some of it will end up leading you to an interesting location.
  • Crime System - Theft, assault, and disturbing order within settlements is now a punishable offense. The punishment includes fines, jail time, and being executed on the spot.
  • Bodies of Water - The game’s world will now feature rivers, allowing you to fill a waterskin in the wild or just take a dip.

Speaking about the update to the native Linux version, the developer said:

However, after the latest Steam client update, many games made with the GMS engine (including Stoneshard) can’t be launched by pressing the “Play” button. Unfortunately, it’s up to Valve to fix this issue, and we don’t have any information about when it might happen.

For now the game can be launched directly via the StoneShard file. In order to access the game’s folder, right click the game’s name in your Steam library, then choose Manage > Browse local files.

The issue is actually Game Maker Studio (GMS), which does not work with the official Steam Linux Runtime and also does not supply the dependencies their Linux builds actually need to run. It's all built and tested against very specific versions of Ubuntu and the libraries those versions had installed. This is really down to GMS developer YoYo Games to properly fix. One developer even wrote a guide to help other developers work around it. We have again today reached out to YoYo Games about this.

You can buy it DRM-free on GOG and also Steam .
