ZimaBoard is a hackable single-board server with Intel Apollo Lake, intended as a server alternative to a Raspberry Pi

    Danie van der Merwe · news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog · Monday, 14 February - 08:28

The ZimaBoard is a small, fanless computer powered by a 6-watt Intel Apollo Lake processor with support for hard drives and SSDs. Apart from having an Intel CPU (vs an ARM processor) this computer also has 2x SATA III, 1x PCIe 2.0 and 2x Gigabit Ethernet ports to set it apart from a Raspberry Pi. So it is more readily usable with expanded storage capabilities and dual networking. It is also a lot cheaper than buying an Intel NUC with a single network port.

It can be used as a media server, software router, personal cloud, VPN and Firewall, smart home monitoring, file sharing and collaboration applications, embedded projects, or personal server applications.

Yes it will cost more than a Pi, and it is a Kickstarter project (with 20% off the final retail price), but I see DBTech has just received one to review on YouTube, so it does actually exist.

5 Essential Steps to Secure Your Linux Server From Hackers

    Danie van der Merwe · news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog · Thursday, 6 January - 14:24

These are really not overly complicated, but are well worth doing for any hardware server, or server you have hosted remotely somewhere on a VPS hosting. It's nothing very fancy but should prevent most of the common exploits that try login into the server via SSH.

What remains of course is any applications (and their 3rd party plugins) that you're running on that server, and which are exposed to the Internet, but that is often specific to the application (or the use of something like Nginx Proxy Manager).

    Issues with XMPP Server restarts

    Marco Cirillo · pubsub.lightwitch.org / lw-org · Sunday, 3 May, 2020 - 22:22

We have been finalizing a few fixes, to even long standing bugs, which will also go into the new Metronome release (3.14.0). We're experimenting with the JSON serialization storage, and the new RAM storage backend. Our benchmarks show the server performance has improved quite a bit, right now Movim for example has almost no hiccups.

We apologize for the small downtimes.
