After CP77 mess, CD Projekt Red will switch to Unreal for next Witcher game

The Witcher is coming back. No, there won't be a new TV series , novel, virtual card game , or other project affiliated with the popular Polish fantasy series. Today, CD Projekt Red confirmed that its tentpole video game series will continue with an entirely new adventure game.

The news arrived on Monday via an image of the game series' trademark wolf medallion covered in snow, with glowing eyes peeking through the frost. The announcement included a four-word tagline: "A new saga begins."

“Decided from the earliest possible phase”

The teaser image was quickly followed by an official CDPR press release , which confirms that the game studio will be using Unreal Engine 5 to develop the new game, as opposed to the internally developed REDengine used in prior Witcher games and 2020's Cyberpunk 2077 . The press release says that the company will continue REDengine development to support ongoing CP77 expansion content, patches, and other updates.

2021 is the 25th anniversary of a gaming-related milestone: the Super Mario 64 face. This fascinating tech demo (whose creator opines about it in a May 2021 interview ) is the first thing you see upon booting the N64's signature game, and it was a declaration of the N64's potential 3D prowess, well ahead of the likes of Sony's first PlayStation.

Modern games rarely come with this sort of useless, whimsical tech demo, and similar tech muscle-flexes on consoles have been rare in the years since the N64's '90s heyday. Tonight, another unbelievable demo joins its ranks: The Matrix Awakens .

This brand-new Unreal Engine 5 showcase, now downloadable on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 , is rendered almost entirely in real time on current-gen consoles. What's more, every image in this article was not only captured on my own home Series X but is also, according to Epic Games, rendered in real time. Only a few choice snippets of the demo, now downloadable via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, consist of premade video footage, which I skipped in favor of the impressive faces, action sequences, and cityscapes that UE5 is apparently equipped to render on the latest home consoles.

After last week's somewhat blasé showcase of in-development Xbox Series X software , our expectations for the coming generation of new game consoles were somewhat tempered. But those expectations got a significant boost this week with Epic Games' unveiling of a jaw-dropping real-time demo of its Unreal Engine 5 technology .

The engine, which Epic says will launch next year, was shown running on PlayStation 5 development hardware, though the company said the same general level of fidelity should be possible on the Xbox Series X and high-end PCs as well. And it shows how the state-of-the-art in graphical quality on those platforms is quickly advancing past resolution and frame rate counts and toward new levels of lighting and modeling detail.


The first pillar of Epic's new engine is what it's calling the Lumen system, a "fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes."

Unreal Engine is now royalty-free until a game makes a whopping $1 mill

Since the rise of Fortnite as a popular game and Unreal Engine 4 as a popular game-making toolkit, Epic Games, the studio behind both, has been keen to capitalize on this momentum. That has included an aggressive push to lock down game makers in its ecosystem, and Tuesday saw Epic announce its most generous developer-specific offer yet: a massive increase to its "royalty-free" grace period.

As of today, any game or software maker who uses Unreal Engine for commercial purposes doesn't owe Epic Games a penny until a single piece of software exceeds one meeeeeeellion dollars ($1,000,000) in gross revenue . This is on top of the company's existing policy to not charge Unreal Engine users a monthly fee, whether they're using the software suite for commercial or educational purposes.

Previously, Epic offered a royalty-free grace period for a game or app's first $50,000 of revenue , then began requiring payment of 5 percent of the software's "worldwide gross revenue" from that point on, including DLC, crowd-sourced fundraising related to the software, and other related revenue streams. That 5-percent fee still applies, but it now leaves game makers unaffected until a $1 million threshold is hit.
