Microsoft’s xCloud game streaming looks worse on Linux than Windows

news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 6 July, 2022 - 19:47

Microsoft's xCloud game streaming appears to dip to a lower visual quality setting when running on Linux. The apparent downgrade across operating systems was noted by a Reddit user over the holiday weekend and confirmed in Ars' own testing this morning.

To compare how xCloud handles a Linux machine vs. a Windows machine, an Edge extension was used during testing to force the browser's User-Agent string to present itself as a Linux browser:

• Windows User-Agent tested: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/103.0.5060.66 Safari/537.36 Edg/103.0.1264.44
• Linux User-Agent tested: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/102.0.5005.27 Safari/537.36 Edg/102.0.1245.7

Tests were conducted on the latest version of Microsoft Edge (Version 103.0.1264.44, 64-bit) running on a Windows 10 PC. All tests were run on a wired Internet connection registering download speeds of 120 Mbps and ~9 ms latency, according to spot tests at Fast.com .

Xbox’s continued cloud climb: Samsung TVs, more nations, games outside Game Pass

news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Thursday, 9 June, 2022 - 12:27 · 1 minute

Though we're not quite to the point of Microsoft releasing an Xbox-focused streaming device, getting a built-in Xbox Cloud Gaming app on current and future Samsung TVs is a start.

Ahead of its annual summer "new games" presentation, Microsoft's team at Xbox pre-briefed members of the press with announcements that don't revolve around gameplay-filled reveal trailers. We thus picked through a 45-minute presentation full of corporate-speak to find news of actual interest, and the biggest announcements unsurprisingly come from the world of Xbox Cloud Gaming.

From this year forward, every "smart TV" sold by Samsung will include built-in support for the Xbox Cloud Gaming app, installable directly on those TVs the same way owners might install video-streaming apps. A Samsung rep clarified to Ars Technica that this includes models already on sale in its "Neo QLED" line of 4K and 8K sets.

More places to play, more games to play

After installing the Xbox app, a compatible Samsung TV will enable Bluetooth device pairing and present step-by-step instructions for wirelessly connecting an official Xbox Wireless Controller, a Bluetooth-compatible PlayStation controller (both DualShock 4 and DualSense), Amazon's Luna controller, or other generic Bluetooth controllers. With at least one controller paired, users will then gain access to the same streamed-games interface used by Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, which is currently available on Chrome and Edge web browsers and all Xbox consoles from the base Xbox One generation upward.

Microsoft’s plans for an Xbox streaming stick head back to the drawing board

news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 27 May, 2022 - 15:21 · 1 minute

It might be a while until you can stream Halo Infinite to a TV using just a small dongle.

Last year, Microsoft officially confirmed years of rumors and announced plans for "standalone streaming devices" that could stream Xbox games through the company's Xcloud service. Now, though, the company says it's essentially going back to the drawing board and "pivot[ing] away from the current iteration" of that streaming-focused hardware.

In a statement to Windows Central , a Microsoft spokesperson reconfirmed that the company has "been working on a game-streaming device, codenamed Keystone, that could be connected to any TV or monitor without the need for a console." At the same time, that spokesperson suggested that it may be a while until we see that hardware being finalized and released:

As part of any technical journey, we are constantly evaluating our efforts, reviewing our learnings, and ensuring we are bringing value to our customers. We have made the decision to pivot away from the current iteration of the Keystone device. We will take our learnings and refocus our efforts on a new approach that will allow us to deliver Xbox Cloud Gaming to more players around the world in the future.

Microsoft's statement comes weeks after a GamesBeat report suggested that Microsoft's game-streaming device would be released "in the next 12 months," citing "people familiar with [Microsoft's] plans." That report also said that certain Samsung smart TVs would be getting an Xbox cloud streaming app in the same time period.
