The 50th release of the XMPP Newsletter!

This is the 50th release of the XMPP Newsletter since it started in February 2019. We think it is worth to celebrate this achievement and say thanks to all the contributors as well as all our readers! Back at the Summit in Brussels, JC Brand, Nicolas Vérité (Nyco) and Severino Ferrer (S0ul) proposed and initiated the XMPP Newsletter. Since then almost every month there has been a release full of news from the XMPP universe. Hence, we are looking forward to the next releases and invite you to participate in this community effort! We would love to see more contributors as well as more translations of the XMPP Newsletter. Read more about how to help below.

• XMPP Italian happy hour [IT]: monthly Italian XMPP web meeting, every third Monday of the month at 7:00 PM local time (online event, with web meeting mode and live streaming).

Talks

• Last November the Linux Inlaws Podcast hosted Edward and Matt from the XSF Board 2024. The episode has been published recently and can be accessed via archive.org .

Articles

Axel Reimer published an XMPP app decision table. It compares typical instant messaging features of popular XMPP apps and might be a guideline for new users who want to try an XMPP app. The table is available in English and German .

You can now ask all your questions about XMPP Providers in the new support chat . That chat is hosted on an own XMPP server which is set up with the new XMPP Providers Server project. It is a simple, Ansible-based all-in-one server setup that can be used for your own XMPP server as well.

Snikket Hosting is now publicly available! The launch is about providing new ways to get started with Snikket, not replacing the options that are already available. If you are already self-hosting Snikket, or planning to, nothing is changing for you. Though please do donate to support the project, even a little helps!

European Union news:

• Designated gatekeepers must now comply with all obligations under the Digital Markets Act

Clients and Applications

• The JMP newsletter introduces the JMP eSIM Adapter , allowing users to use eSIMs from any provider in any device. It explains how to download and write eSIMs to the adapter, including using an open source Android app or PC/SC reader. Cheogram Android also receives an update with new features and a visual refresh. There’s a clarification on contact integration, with Google now requiring the app claim to upload the contacts even though it does not.
• Converse 10.1.7 with StropheJS fix for XEP-0474: SASL SCRAM Downgrade Protection .
• Psi+ 1.5.1716 through 1.5.1669 have been released.

• Openfire has been released in version 4.8.1 .
  • Openfire inVerse plugin version 10.1.7.1 has been released .
  • Openfire PionTurn plugin 1.0.0 has been released! It creates a TURN/STUN server for Openfire.

Libraries & Tools

• A new release of go-xmpp 0.1.4 .
• A new release of go-sendxmpp 0.9.0 .
• overpush : A self-hosted, drop-in replacement for Pushover, that uses XMPP as delivery method. It offers the same API for submitting messages, so that existing setups (e.g. Grafana) can continue working and only require changing the API URL. Release article .

Extensions and specifications

The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its XEP series in addition to XMPP RFCs .

Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in XEP-0001 , which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. Read more about the standards process . Communication around Standards and Extensions happens in the Standards Mailing List ( online archive ).

The XEP development process starts by writing up an idea and submitting it to the XMPP Editor. Within two weeks, the Council decides whether to accept this proposal as an Experimental XEP.

monocles chat is available on Google Play. It comes with many updates like a working commands view and better support for WebXDC apps, but also an initial modern integration of stickers.

Servers

• ejabberd 24.02 has been released, and it comes with support for TLS 1.3 and advanced SASL2 protocols. This release brings performance enhancements with Bind 2 for faster connection times, which is especially crucial for mobile network users. Support for XEP-0424: Message Retraction allows users to manage their message history and remove something they posted by mistake.

Libraries & Tools

• GitLab XMPP Bot , an XMPP bot that sends messages based on GitLab hooks had its 1.0.0 release. This bot is based on python-nbxmpp and it is active in Gajim’s support chat .
• go-xmpp 0.1.0 has been released.
• python-nbxmpp 4.5.4 has been released, which fixes some issues around subject changes and date parsing.
• Slixfeed is a news bot offered as client and service component; it can handle multiple chats simultaneously and also display media inline, which, in addition of it being intended primarily for private chats, makes it exceptionally useful for groupchats where visual contents are essential.
• StropheJS 2.0.0 has been released.
• xmpp-rs has gained a Code of Conduct and a CONTRIBUTING guide. Feel free to come and say hi!

The XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) will hold its 26th XMPP Summit in Brussels, Belgium this year again! These are the two days preceding FOSDEM 2024 . The XSF invites everyone interested in development of the XMPP protocol to attend, and discuss all things XMPP in person and remote!

Time & Address

The venue will take place at the Thon Hotel EU including coffee break (from 08:30 o’clock) and lunch (12:00 to 14:00 o’clock) paid by the XSF in the hotel restaurant.

Please note that, although we welcome everyone to join, you must announce your attendance beforehand, as the venue is not publicly accessible. There are talks in the Real Time Communications devroom that relate to XMPP. These are so far:

• Bridging Open Protocols: XMPP and ActivityPub Gateway via Libervia . In this session, we’ll explore the architecture of this gateway, detailing how it facilitates communication between XMPP and ActivityPub. We’ll delve into the intricacies of protocol mapping and discuss how Libervia integrates features such as microblogging, reactions, likes/favorites, mentions, and calendar events across these platforms.

XMPP Summit 26

Prior to FOSDEM, the XSF will also hold its 26th XMPP summit . This is where community members gather to discuss protocol changes and exchange within the developer community. We’ll be reporting live from the event and also from FOSDEM.

The XSF is planning the XMPP Summit 26, which is to take place on February 1st & 2nd 2024 in Brussels (Belgium, Europe). XMPP and Google Summer of Code 2023

• Automating the automatable : During the past year, the team behind the XMPP Providers project worked on automating the process of gathering data about XMPP providers. Automating this process reduces manual work significantly (for example, checking websites by hand, verifying information, listing sources, etc.) and helps to sustain the team’s efforts. Automation also enables the project to be up to date - every day! A suite of tools has been developed since, providing the ability to query properties via XMPP and through the web. All of these tools are working together in a GitLab pipeline, which runs every night to keep the data up to date.

This articles discuss about this feature.

• The Power of Green Coding: Erlang and Elixir Leading the Charge by Simon El Nahas: In the era of the green revolution, Erlang and Elixir languages are helping industries reduce server consumption and minimise environmental impact. Here are some industry examples demonstrating this.
• Italian XMPP-IT Community - they have a website now: www.xmpp-it.net , a group chat: xmpp-it@conference.xmpp-it.net , they also have a Git to share, create and develop software, configurations and documents concerning the XMPP protocol: git.xmpp-it.net , and finally created a wiki for documentation in Italian: wiki.xmpp-it.net . • Gajim 1.8.3 and 1.8.4 have been released. These releases come with improvements for the profile window, fail-safes for anonymous accounts, usability improvements, and several fixes.
• Psi+ 1.5.1653 has been released.
• Libervia has received new funding from NLnet/NGI0 for the development of an email-XMPP gateway. This project will enable the conversion of email messages to XMPP and vice versa, including the transformation of mailing lists into pubsub-based forums. Enhancements in Libervia will include UI/UX improvements, end-to-end encryption, and advanced handling of attachments. More details on the project are available here .
• monocles chat 1.7.7.5 has been released and got several fixes and improvements like the re-implementation of stickers or a DNSSEC and DANE check shown in the interface. Also an option to enforce DANE and further improvements in the latest Beta 1.7.8 .

Extensions and specifications

The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its XEP series in addition to XMPP RFCs .

Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in XEP-0001 , which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. Read more about the standards process . Communication around Standards and Extensions happens in the Standards Mailing List ( online archive ).

Proposed

The XEP development process starts by writing up an idea and submitting it to the XMPP Editor. Within two weeks, the Council decides whether to accept this proposal as an Experimental XEP.

• Two months after the last release, Gajim 1.8.2 comes with better support for gateways, improved group chats, an easy way to change the font size, and many small fixes.
• After several months of hard work Monal 6.0 was finally released. This version comes with new artwork by Ann-Sophie Zwahlen, support for Audio-Calls funded by EU’s NGI Assure via the NLnet Foundation and many, many other improvements and bugfixes. The full list of changes can be found in this blog post .
• monocles chat 1.7.5 to 1.7.7 have been released. monocles chat 1.7.5 is now available on F-Droid , while 1.7.7 is only available on Codeberg yet. These releases come with many design improvements to meet modern messaging clients. There are also many new settings, like custom backgrounds, the often requested option to switch between round and square avatars (in 1.7.7), and the introduction of Material Design 3. Stay tuned for a final release 1.8 in November!
• Conversations 2.12.12 has been released, which brings support for Private DNS (DNS over TLS), a themed launcher icon, and a fix for a rare permission issue when sharing files on Android 11+.
• Cheogram 2.12.8-3 has been released, coming with bugfixes and calling stability improvements.

• ejabberd 23.10 has been published and brings support for XEP-0402: PEP Native Bookmarks , XEP-0421: Anonymous unique occupant identifiers for MUCs , and includes many bugfixes.

Extensions and specifications

The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its XEP series in addition to XMPP RFCs .

Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in XEP-0001 , which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. Read more about the standards process . Communication around Standards and Extensions happens in the Standards Mailing List ( online archive ).

The XEP development process starts by writing up an idea and submitting it to the XMPP Editor. Within two weeks, the Council decides whether to accept this proposal as an Experimental XEP.
