Ausrie Fel: latex with lashings of gothic, rock and metal style.

Ausrie Fel is the name of a UK latex clothing brand and of the designer who created it. With its glamorous bodycon designs and a decorative style heavily influenced by the owner’s gothic, rock and heavy metal tastes, it appeals to a mix of people beyond classic latex customers. And for many fans, its focus on one-off garments also offers the bonus of never bumping into anyone wearing the exact same piece as you! Interview: Tony Mitchell. Banner: Yuliya Zachenko by Philip Faith
Ausrie Fel is one of those latex clothing brands whose distinctive name makes it easy to remember, if not so easy to pronounce correctly.

The brand name is an abbreviation of Ausrie Felice,  the real name of its owner, a Lithuanian artist, model and designer who has lived in the UK for many years and is currently based in Peterborough.

Her trademark designs are eyecatching, glamorous bodycon garments, many decorated in gothic/rock/ heavy metal style with inverted crucifixes, iron crosses, ankhs and other appliqué symbols, not to mention a liberal sprinkling of studs and chains.

The Ausrie Fel designs you’ll see in this article’s galleries, in her Etsy store and on her Facebook and Instagram pages, include some items made in multiples. But one-offs are the designer’s primary focus.

“I love making one-offs to offer people a chance to have something unique they cannot get anywhere else,” she says. “This is what I love doing most as it keeps me creative and happy as an artist.

“I find it really hard to concentrate when I have to remake the designs I’ve previously made and offer them as ‘made to order’ as it doesn’t excite me at all. However, it’s good for business to have that option.”

She models and photographs a lot of the clothes herself — two jobs for which, it must be said, she is well equipped — and works with a variety of other models and photographers sympathetic to her aesthetic.

And as for the pronunciation of her name, she explains, “the first syllable is like ‘mouse’ without the ‘m’, and the second is pronounced ‘ria’, as in Austria”. Got it? Good!

I tell her that when I Googled ‘Ausrie’, practically every search result referred to her or her label. So using her own name for her business turns out to have been a great choice for search engine optimisation.

I ask her how advantageous she has found this to be.

“I haven’t given it much thought to be honest,” she says. “Lots of people are having a hard time spelling it correctly, ha-ha, but personally I love it since I wanted to call my line under my actual name.”

It turns out that her decision about where in the UK to base herself was equally without artifice. She didn’t actually travel more than a thousand miles from Lithuania with the specific intention of setting up a latex label in the wilds of East Anglia.

“I’ve relocated about 13 or 14 times since moving to the UK due to various circumstances in my life,” she explains.

“Peterborough wasn’t a place I was instantly drawn to move to, but it just happens my cousin lives here in a place by herself, so she invited me. I’ve only been living there since spring 2018.”

Reading her bio on Facebook, which is short but still about 500 percent more detailed than most latex

designers manage there, I pick up on the fact that she mentions twice that her garments are ‘cruelty free’.

With interest in veganism rising, quite a few fetish labels have latched onto latex clothing’s vegan credentials as a potential marketing angle.

But I think this is the first time I’ve seen a latex designer use the words ‘cruelty free’, a term more frequently found in the marketing of cosmetics. So how important is this to Ausrie Fel — or to her customers?

“I created that page a million years ago,” she explains. “But yes, I was very focused to mention ‘cruelty free’ everywhere I could back in the day.

“I have customers occasionally asking if casein [mammalian milk protein] is used in latex sheeting production, or if my other fabrics are vegan friendly — since I love to use different fabrics in my design production.”

The first appearances of Ausrie Fel as a designer on the web seem to date back to 2013, when she launched a latex collection called Love Spell.

It was distinctive for that time, but with its contrast trims and bows, was characterised more by cuteness than by the in-your-face sexiness the label is now renowned for.

However, it transpires that 2013 was only when the designer first went public with her latex creations.

“I began playing with latex much earlier; actually I bought a ‘latex making kit’ when I first arrived to the UK. I used to make little items for myself just for photo shoots, as I used to model a lot back then.

“In 2013 I started making more daring items such as dresses, my first pair of leggings and then a catsuit eventually — which was very challenging for me since I had no idea what I was doing or how patterns work, but I kept going.

“I made lots of mistakes, wasted a lot of expensive fabrics, but it was all worth it in the end. It was pretty much just a start and that’s how Love Spell was born.

“I have always known, however, that ‘cute’ isn’t the style I want to go for, as it does not reflect me as an artist nor a person either. And it doesn’t please me enough to continue, so I moved on from it quickly.

As a lover of metal and rock I quickly realised how much energy I had to express my craft and show it to the world — or else I’d go mad. So I just followed where this energy guided me. Simple as that.

“Moving to the UK definitely helped to broaden my horizons. It was hard living in the country I’m from, as it is still quite close-minded on many levels.

“Don’t get me wrong; I still like to make a cute outfit now and then. But cute in a gothic/romantic way, I guess.”

      AVANTGARDISTA 2018: AUGUST COVER

Avantgardista 2018: 2nd Munich fashion weekend grows by 50%.

After a promising launch last November, the Avantgardista alt-fashion weekend returns to Munich in late October for its second annual outing. With some minor schedule revisions and a new partner hotel, Avantgardista 2018 will play host to 30-plus designers (up 50% on last year) and more than 130 models, before Saturday’s Showroom event segues neatly into SubRosaDictum’s Space Intruders party at 10pm. Avangardista 2018, the second edition of the new fetish fashion weekend launched last year in Munich, takes place in the city on October 19-21 this year.

Organised by legendary Munich party brand SubRosaDictum, Avantgardista 2018 will again use the main day (Saturday) of its three-day programme to combine a ten-hour alt-fashion fair and runway show at Munich’s Kohlebunker venue with an edition of the organiser’s famous Space Intruders fetish party right next door.

Avantgardista launched last year as a new concept in fetish fashion events. The idea was to showcase alternative clothing and accessory designers to the fashion-conscious German public (and especially those from the wealthy Munich area) in an artistic, stylish and non-threatening way.

It would distance itself from the usual type of fetish fair, market or expo, by creating a brightly-lit ‘exhibition’ environment in which designers were encouraged to display a few of their most eye-catching pieces as works of wearable art, more or less.

This space (in which the fashion shows would also take place) was christened the Showroom to emphasise the idea of an elegant room in which sales could be made and orders taken, but without the crowded clothes rails and cluttered tables more often associated with fetish fairs.

    EXHIBITING DESIGNERS UP 50%

This year’s event will feature more than 30 designers (a 50 percent increase on last year) and a model contingent that has already topped 130 and is still growing.

Extra space for the increased number of exhibitors will apparently be created by liberating the ‘backstage’ area used as the dressing room last year. This year’s dressing space will, we hear, be ‘under canvas’.

Latex fashion will be well represented at Avantgardista 2018, along with garments in other fetish fabrics including vegan leather.

There’ll also be a substantial choice of accessories on display, from shoes, boots and gloves to headpieces and jewellery.

Unsurprisingly, a substantial number of the participating labels are German, as before. But as the organiser correctly anticipated, the second edition of Avantgardista has also attracted considerably more international names.

Foreign brands include both the USA’s ExxEss Latex (invited back after their 2017 appearance) and Kurage from Japan — two latex labels that have had massive impacts on the catwalks of major European fetish events in recent years.

There are also four UK brands participating — up from just one last year.

There is a change of partner hotel for the Avantgardista 2018 weekend, with the three-star Motel One München Parkstadt-Schwabing replacing last year’s Leonardo Royal.

The Motel One is considerably closer to the Avantgardista venue (just two stops on the u-Bahn) and the €79 per night room rates should be a bit more accessible for those on a budget.

The change of hotel also means that Friday night’s Meet&Greet, which took place in the Leonardo’s bar last year, moves this year to the Kohlebunker where the main Avantgardista event is held.

This move also coincides with another innovation: on Friday the Showroom will open at 7pm for three hours, prior to the main Showroom day on Saturday.

The Meet&Greet will run from 8pm on Friday in the same space, providing an opportunity to mingle with designers, models, organising team members and other participants in a casual atmosphere.

    NEW TIMES FOR SATURDAY

In another programme change, Saturday’s Showroom at the Kohlebunker will open two hours earlier, at midday, and close at 10pm, when the after-party starts.

Exhibitors will doubtless welcome not having to staff their stands for two hours after the start of the party!

The fashion shows in the Showroom are due to start at around 7pm. They’ll be presented again by the bilingual team of Fräulein Katzentanz and Ian Dutton, who did such a sterling job last time.

At the moment we don’t know how many of the 30+ participants will actually appear on the catwalk, or how many individual shows there’ll be.

But even with some pairing-up of clothing and accessory labels, there’ll almost certainly be more shows than last year.

However, if the show schedule is as tightly organised as it was in 2017, a decent pace should still be achievable, especially if the time given to onstage introductions can be shortened a bit.

We love MCs Ian Dutton and Fräulein Katzentanz, but one intro per three labels rather than one for every individual label might be worth considering.

Below, we list the brands showing at Avantgardista 2018, broken down according to countries of origin, starting with Germany, the country supplying the most participants. See also our Designer Galleries below.

Germany will this year provide 18 brands. The first six, in A-Z order, are: AIO Fashion (Berchtesgaden), Arcane Accessories (Bad Homburg), benno von stein (Stockach), Chronomatic Luxury Latex Wear (Berlin), Cici Tiara (Berlin) and Cochaine (Berlin)

Then come: Fernando Berlin (Berlin), GoldPiercingArt (Laufen), Maniac Latex (Berlin), Maripaux (Schoneiche), Marquis Fashion (Solingen), Rohmy Ropework Couture (Karlsruhe).

The last six from Germany are Rosengarn (Geilenkirchen), Schnittmuskel (Karlsruhe), Tatjana Warnecke (Berlin), Tight Laced (Berlin) YourShape (Hattingen) and 6imSinn (Bad Nauheim).

The UK comes next with four designers: Amentium (Liverpool), Chained & Stoned (Margate), Engineers of Desire (London) and Figure of A (London).

Austria is fielding two labels this year: GlanzGlück and RubbErik, both of which are based in Vienna.

The remaining participants are Etere (Brest, Belarus), ExxEss Latex (Tacoma, WA, USA), Hebi Corsets (Genoa, Italy), Kurage (Tokyo, Japan), Rubbella (Feanwâlden, Netherlands) and The Custom Boot & Shoe Company (Paphos, Cyprus).

An additional highlight will be an exhibition by renowned photographic artist Sven Hoffmann of images from his book Strenge Damen II (Strict Ladies II).

The Space Intruders after-party hosted by SubRosaDictum will fire up in the adjoining Kesselhaus building — a cavernous ex-industrial space — as the Showroom closes.

Space Intruders was a major event in its own right before Avantgardista was created. Its new companion role as the big party of the fashion weekend gives visitors a great chance to test the danceworthiness of new outfits in a proper fetish dresscode clubbing environment.

There will be various sideshows including an Avantgardista stage at Space Intruders. (Last year, rather in the style of Prince, ExxEss Latex put on a second show there after their big ‘official’ show earlier in the evening.)

DJs lined up for Space intruders are Annie O, DJ Gillian and DJ Shady Miles.

    FASHIONISTAS OUT IN FORCE

The Avantgardista 2018 weekend is scheduled to finish as before with a Chill Out gathering on Sunday 21. No details are available yet but it will most likely be at the Kohlebunker as before.

The enthusiasm with which fetish models (aka ‘fashionistas’) have been signing up for this year’s event is a good indicator that Avantgardista is on course to become the European fetish fashion industry’s top autumn fixture.

This year’s Avantgardista will feature among its model contingent many familiar faces from major European weekends: people such as Cat Atonia, Cassidy Rose, Dutch Dame, Elena Lovebite, Hibiki, Honeyhair, July Shine, Kari Berg, Mary Jale, Sakura Sun, Sarathustra, Satoria and Sinteque.

But the event is also a draw for many more models, especially from the south of Germany, who don’t get to weekends like the German Fetish Ball. They may be less well-known internationally, but still have plenty to offer.

The Avantagardista 2018 weekend takes place from Friday October 19 to Sunday 21 at the Kohlebunker, Lilienthalallee 35, 80939 Munich, Germany.

The Space Intruders party takes place in the adjoining Kesselhaus building, which for convenience is treated as part of number 35.

Tickets for the Avantgardista Showroom (no dresscode) on Saturday October 20 cost €15 inc tax plus €2 handling fee. They’re available both in advance and on the door.

Tickets for Space Intruders cost €58 inc tax plus €2 handling fee, while a combined ticket for Avantgardista and Space Intruders is also available at €70 inc tax.

Tickets are available from the Avantgardista ticket page (link below) and should soon be available from a variety of authorised resellers (mainly fetish stores) in Munich, other parts of Germany including Berlin, and Vienna.

A full list of ticket outlets can be found on the SubRosaDictum website (link below), where you can also find the Space Intruders fetish dresscode.  Tickets for Space Intruders can only be purchased in advance.
