'Clean air, an amazing house': pandemic tree-changers grab a slice of the Apple Isle

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / TheGuardian-Australia · Saturday, 6 February, 2021 - 19:00

Property agents can’t list homes fast enough to keep up with demand as Tasmania finds itself in the middle of a boom

For Annetta Mallon, the choice was simple: the increasingly busy, crowded streets of the Central Coast or the clean air, beaches and relaxed lifestyle of the Apple Isle. “We looked in Queensland, we looked in parts of NSW, but we fell in love with Tasmania,” she says of her decision to relocate with her husband, Peter, and their dog, Cully.

They are not alone. Tasmania, which for many years suffered from very low population growth, has seen that trend reverse in recent years with more people now coming in than leaving for the past five years. Touting its outstanding natural beauty, fine produce and expanding employment prospects amid the work-from-home revolution, Tasmania hopes to grow its current population of around 530,000 to 650,000 by the middle of the century, an increase of 22%.

Joe Root's superb 218 gives England commanding position against India

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / TheGuardian-Australia · Saturday, 6 February, 2021 - 11:46

There were two moments during the second day in Chennai that rather summed up where Joe Root’s head is at right now; the zone that the England captain currently finds himself in during what has been a frankly remarkable start to 2021.

The first came just before tea when he danced down the pitch and launched Ravichandran Ashwin for a handsome six over long-on. So consumed by his current hunger for runs and the tunnel vision that has descended over him, Root had not clocked that he had just brought up his fifth Test match double-century until a ripple of applause echoed around the empty stands of the Chepauk Stadium.

Benjamina Ebuehi's orange and brown butter cornmeal cake recipe | The sweet spot

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / TheGuardian-Australia · Saturday, 6 February, 2021 - 11:30

Fresh and not too sweet, this cake is a good alternative to a slice of toast and marmalade in the morning (or noon, or evening)

Sometimes, cake for breakfast isn’t a completely bad idea. The trick is to go for something that isn’t overly sweet or covered in lots of frosting, and that can hold its own alongside a good, strong coffee. This is one of those cakes: zingy with plenty of citrus zest, yet warm and toasty from the brown butter. A slice of this is enough to brighten even the greyest of mornings.

Yotam Ottolenghi’s recipes for Valentine’s Day

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / TheGuardian-Australia · Saturday, 6 February, 2021 - 09:30

A three-course showpiece to prep in advance, so you can spend more time with your better half: burnt aubergine with feta and harissa oil, prawns in vanilla and rum butter, and a chocolatey coffee mousse to finish

This time last year, many of us were looking forward to a special, one-to-one supper with a loved one. The partner we live with, for example, but perhaps forget to go on dates with; a special meal, quality time, stories saved up to be shared. The past year has, of course, brought a whole new meaning to the idea of “quality time”, and I’m not sure anyone has any great stories they’ve saved for this Valentine’s dinner. Be kind and cut yourself some slack: forget about the top new chat and focus instead on a top new meal. Pat yourself on the back for making it this far, and raise a large glass of something you adore.
