Audi will race in Formula 1 in 2026 with engines built at its Audi Sport factory in Neustadt, Germany. After years of rumors, Friday's announcement was not entirely unexpected; in May then-volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess confirmed it would enter the sport in four years when the next set of engine regulations come into effect.

VW Group will actually fund two F1 programs, one with Audi and second with Porsche, which is in the process of acquiring a 50-percent stake in Red Bull Technologies. The Porsche announcement was supposed to take place at Red Bull's home race in Austria in July, but the sport only ratified the 2026 engine rules in mid-August.

That deal may still need some i's dotted and t's crossed , but with the new rules now confirmed, Audi has taken the opportunity of this week's Belgian Grand Prix to reveal its show car, and to formally launch its F1 effort.

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron: The electric crossover has been worth the wait

LOS ANGELES, CALIF.—When Dieselgate made headlines in 2014, it fundamentally changed how Volkswagen Group and its associated sub-brands, from Volkswagen to Lamborghini, had to think about cars. Diesel got a big black mark, and electric vehicles got a much-needed bump in the race for a more sustainable way to meet the ever-growing demand for personal transportation.

The scandal accelerated Volkswagen’s push to go completely electric by 2033 and encouraged investment in a US network of EV chargers ( which still leave a lot to be desired ), but the rollout of the EVs themselves has been slow, to say the least.

Audi, one of the VW Group’s luxury automakers, has been slowly rolling out a suite of new EVs that began with the e-tron SUV, the e-tron Sportback , and the e-tron GT sport tourer and most recently includes the Q4 e-tron in both typical crossover and Sportback form. The Q4 e-tron was announced in February of 2021 and was originally slated to make its stateside debut in mid- to late-2021.

Porsche and Audi are both going to enter Formula 1 in 2026

Rumors that Volkswagen Group is poised to enter Formula 1 have circulated for years. Every few months, often in a European car magazine, we'll read about an unnamed VW Group board member who says it's happening, then it all goes quiet for a few more months. But now it's really for real, says VW Group CEO Herbert Diess, as the 2026 rule change offers the perfect opportunity.

For a while, VW Group moving to F1 barely even made sense. The two high-technology, high-engineering brands in the group—Porsche and Audi—were both already spending F1-sized budgets to compete against each other in sportscar racing. That's a far more road-relevant form of motorsport, and one where both companies proved new technology that's now commonplace in their road cars.

But then Dieselgate happened, and Audi's diesel-powered hybrid Le Mans conquerer had to go . A year later, Porsche's even faster hybrid program was shuttered, having won everything there was to win . Across the group, brands scaled back their motorsports programs, focusing on electric ones like Formula E and VW's Pikes Peak champion .

Audi e-tron is one of the most aerodynamic cars from the automaker. Due to the presence of lithium-ion battery cells under the body, it has a flat floor, making it lower than RS7 Sportback. Due to the same reason, most of its heavyweight lies down the body leading to a lower center of gravity than R8.

Also, the Audi e-tron GT is 4.96 m in length which is almost the same as its five-seater SUV Q8.

The alloy wheels are designed to cut through the air to enhance the overall dynamics of the car. The electric sedan has an overall drag coefficient of 0.24.

    3. Build On The Same EV Technology As Porsche Taycan

Audi e-tron GT is built using the same technology as that of its long-distance cousin Porsche Taycan. As you might know, both the German automakers Audi and Porsche are owned by the Volkswagen group. Hence, the EV technology is being developed under collaborative efforts.
