Le BMW iX2 est utile, mais manque d’audace

      news.movim.eu / Numerama · Wednesday, 11 October, 2023 - 08:09

When will we see an electric BMW M car? We speak to its boss to find out

BMW provided flights from Washington, DC, to Portugal and three nights in a hotel so we could drive the new BMW i5 as well as the BMW i7 M70 . Ars does not accept paid editorial content.

LISBON, Portugal—Last week we wrote about driving a pair of new M-badged electric BMWs. With the arrival of the i5 M60 and the iX M70 , there are now go-fast variants of all four of BMW's battery-electric vehicles. But as BMW will openly admit, those aren't true M cars. That's not to say that BMW's M Division is afraid of electrification—last year it debuted the XM, a performance plug-in hybrid SUV . And next year, the XM's powertrain will reappear in a plug-in hybrid M5. But when might we see a purely electric M car?

Conveniently for us, Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, was on hand in Portugal to sit down and talk about the future of M performance and electrification. And, as it turns out, we might see a fully electric BMW M car in plenty of time before the end of this decade.

"Well, if you look on social media, you can already see our mule test car with quad motors, because for us, that is a very promising concept for high performance," van Meel said, referring to recently released photos of a BMW i4 EV with the license plate M HP 4 E .

The 2024 BMW i7 M70—electric luxury turned up to 11

BMW provided flights from Washington, DC, to Portugal and three nights in a hotel so we could drive the new BMW i7 M70 as well as another BMW electric vehicle, which you can read about on October 1. Ars does not accept paid editorial content.

LISBON, PORTUGAL—Driving BMW's new electric 7 Series was one of the true automotive surprises of 2022. The automaker rolled out electric and combustion-tech versions at the same time, with the electric i7 bettering the gas-burning 760i in just about every way. Now, BMW has sent its biggest and boldest EV off to its M division, the in-house tuning and motorsport people. The resulting car is the fastest-accelerating and most expensive electric BMW to date.

I've long been an advocate for putting electric motors in luxury cars, especially big ones the combination of instant torque and near-silence is ideal for that application. Automakers both new and established also like the idea of big, luxury EVs because they can charge plenty for the privilege, so it's a crowded field. Some cars in this class target rollercoaster-like acceleration; for example, Porsche , Tesla , and Lucid will each sell you a four-door EV capable of a 0–60 time that's around two seconds.

The i7 M70 is not as fast as those EVs, and it's not the kind of luxury EV you might use to wipe the smiles off some faces at the local drag strip's "run what ya brung" night. Instead, in keeping with BMW's old "ultimate driving machine" slogan, it's a rather engaging driver's car, one that belies its size and mass remarkably well.

BMW decides heated seat subscriptions are a bust

BMW's experiment with offering in-car subscriptions for hardware features installed at the factory is over. Earlier this week, a BMW board member told Autocar that while it will still pursue some subscription features in the future, those will only be software-based services.

The last decade or so has seen the auto industry get tech fever. Wide-eyed executives and shareholders looked at the profit margins and market value of software companies and their "recurring revenue streams" and decided they wanted a slice of that, particularly since a modern car is just so many computers on wheels now. But it turns out—surprise, surprise—that consumers don't really want any more monthly payments attached to their vehicles.

Indeed, in 2019 BMW earned a degree of consumer distrust after making Apple CarPlay a subscription-only feature for a while before backtracking.

BMW’s Neue Klasse points to a radical reinvention for future sedans

A BMW neue klasse concept in the desert, with a door open

BMW provided flights from Albany to Munich and back, and three nights in a hotel so we could visit the IAA Munich auto show. Ars does not accept paid editorial content.

Some car manufacturers are easing their way into electrification by taking existing products and swapping engines and fuel tanks for motors and batteries. Others are taking a more radical approach, rebooting and refreshing to take advantage of the new design flexibility afforded by electric drivetrains.

BMW has done a little bit of both, starting with the radical i3 and i8 but lately offering things like the i4 and i7 , visually and conceptually quite similar to their gas-powered counterparts. For its next generation of EVs, though, it looks like BMW is committing to the reinvention approach. Meet the all-new-everything Neue Klasse.

Neue Klasse, which simply means "new class" in German, is a reference back to a line of coupes and sedans that BMW launched through the 1960s and early '70s. These are the cars largely responsible for establishing the brand identity we think of today when we think "BMW." With this neue Neue Klasse, BMW is reinventing itself again, this time with a focus on sustainability and electrification—plus a wild design that's unlike any previous production car.
