End users, admins, and researchers better brace yourselves: The number of apps being patched for zero-day vulnerabilities has skyrocketed this month and is likely to get worse in the following weeks.

People have worked overtime in recent weeks to patch a raft of vulnerabilities actively exploited in the wild, with offerings from Apple, Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, Adobe, and Cisco all being affected since the beginning of the month. The total number of zero-days in September so far is 10, compared with a total of 60 from January through August, according to security firm Mandiant. The company tracked 55 zero-days in 2022 and 81 in 2021.

The number of zero-days tracked this month is considerably higher than the monthly average this year. A sampling of the affected companies and products includes iOS and macOS, Windows, Chrome, Firefox, Acrobat and Reader, the Atlas VPN, and Cisco’s Adaptive Security Appliance Software and its Firepower Threat Defense. The number of apps is likely to grow because a single vulnerability that allows hackers to execute malicious code when users open a booby-trapped image included in a message or web page is present in possibly hundreds of apps.

Fakespot, a useful service that explains how products you've never heard of could have 12,000 reviews with a 4.6-star average, has been acquired by Firefox maker Mozilla , and Mozilla plans to integrate it into Firefox .

"We are joining a company that develops one of the most popular browsers in the world in Firefox with a lineage that dates back to the origins of the Internet," writes Saoud Khalifah, founder of Fakespot, on the company's site. "In Mozilla, we have found a partner that shares a similar mission as to what the future of the internet should look like, where the convergence of trust, privacy, and security play an imperative part of our digital experiences."

Mozilla acquired the article-saving tool Pocket (formerly Read It Later) in February 2017 but had already integrated its extension directly into Firefox . Pocket was a key piece of what Mozilla calls its Context Graph , a kind of human-powered web discovery and understanding system. It's easy to see Fakespot as part of that.

Chrome developers' decision to remove support for a compressed image format that Google helped develop is just another sign of "the disturbing amount of control" the ad company has over browsers and the web, according to the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

In a statement , Greg Farough, campaigns manager at the FSF, took aim at Google's stated reason for deprecating support for the JPEG XL image format , which was based on Google's PIK format . A Google engineer, commenting on the JPEG XL issue tracker on Chromium, Chrome's open source core project, wrote that "there is not enough interest from the entire ecosystem to continue experimenting with JPEG XL." The format also "does not bring sufficient incremental benefits over existing formats," and removing it "reduces the maintenance burden," the engineer wrote.

"Putting aside the problematic aspects of the term 'ecosystem' when you yourself are by far the largest and most dangerous predator in said 'ecosystem,'" Farough wrote (adding his own link). "In supposedly gauging what the 'ecosystem' wants, all Google is really doing is asking itself what Google wants."

So you might wonder why I would make small MicroDonations rather than waiting until solely one of the causes receives the larger sum (such as £5 or £12, etc.), instead of splitting it into smaller diffuse donations all at once. It is not that large donations are vulgar, but that having small donations (whether it is only the small donations or both small and large donations combined) reduces the limit on who can donate that month. Not only does it mean I can avoid tacit assumptions as though people might thinks the 'only' way to donate is to donate via a large sum or repeat-donation, but also it means international donors can find it accessible, such as in Columbia where a Linux CDROM and UBCD would help locals evacuating from a Volcano, but also Venezuela where the economy has taken a downward turn and yet the people there can use Linux (such as via the State or personal choice such as Kwort or Debian Linux). A MicroDonation also means people can chip in in other ways such as by sharing the torrent file (such as in "Transmission" software) of a file used such as UBCD538.iso or a LinuxDistro that has Mozilla Firefox on it (or encouraging Thunderbird such as for the RSS reader). I opted to donated a dollar to Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) and two dollars to Mozilla (for Thunderbird, Firefox and other browsers like Gnome Web Browser using it). This means that a benefit of microDonations is that it makes the overt usage of different licenses apparent, such as MPL (Mozilla Public License), GPLv2 (or v3, etc.), MIT License, Apache License, BSD License and so on. Having that trail of Micro-Donations and the ability for communication so that new donors and the recipient (e.g. Mozilla or UBCD) is a good form of prepping. It means people can be connected and set up a low-cost, low-power wifi MESH network in a previous disaster zone or in anticipation "just in case". That knowledge and encouragement to read the manual of these softwares also is a form of helping education or training.

As part of prepping, an RSS reader (like Mozilla Thunderbird or those found on linux Distros) can be used to get feeds for emergency alerts. Also GRSync can be used on such devices to share data such as by Wifi.
