Stan Sport: Everything You Need to Know, From Price to What’s Streaming

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Thursday, 18 February, 2021 - 00:00 · 2 minutes

Stan’s streaming experience just got that much more exciting, because the entertainment service has announced that it will soon be showing more than your favourite series and TV shows.

In an update shared today, Stan revealed that it will now also be streaming Rugby (and eventually, Wimbledon and Roland-Garros) events – ad-free – through a sparkly new service, Stan Sport.

Sports fans can register for access to Stan Sport when it officially goes live. There is no confirmed date just yet, but the AFR has reported that it may be hitting screens around February 19 .

How can you access Stan Sport?

You’ll need to be a registered member with regular old Stan if you’d like to use their Stan Sports service. From there, you can request to introduce the add-on to your subscription.

    How much does it cost?

Good news is that you can sign up for a 30 day free trial from today if you’d like to, y’know, try before you buy. Just visit the website here Stan.com.au/sport to activate your membership.

Once your free trial is over (those babies are available for a limited time, by the way) a Sports Stan add on is $10 per month.

This would be in addition to a base membership, which is priced at $10 per month for the Stan Basic subscription (one screen at a time, only one phone can access and no HD), $14 per month for Stan Standard (three screens at a time, three phones with access, and HD), or $19 per month for Stan Premium (four screens at a time, five phones with access, 4K Ultra HD and HD).

So, in a nutshell, you’re looking at $20 per month for the minimum and $29 per month for the full HD experience.

What’s going to be shown on Stan Sport?

More details are coming in this department, but for now, we know that the Super Rugby AU, Super Rugby Aotearoa and Trans-Tasman tournament will be aired on the service, along with the Rugby Championship, Bledisloe Cup, Shute Shield, Hospital Cup, Currie Cup and New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship, Super W, Wallabies and Wallaroos test matches and SANZAAR Union home tests.

And as mentioned above, Wimbledon and Roland-Garros (the French Open) will have a home on Stan Sport going forward, too.

If you want to learn more or register now, visit the website here .

Oh, and if you want more sports content. Check out our write up on where you can find every game in the 2021 AFLW season , too.

Bubble Tea-Flavoured Ice Cream Is a Real Thing and Where Has It Been All Our Lives?

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Monday, 15 February, 2021 - 00:35 · 2 minutes

Calling all bubble tea lovers, we’ve just received news that’s going to blow your mind. From today, you can head to your local Coles or Woolies and grab a bubble tea dessert that’s inspired by the iconic drink. Brought to you by the good people at Buono, the two-part range is the brand’s signature dessert collection that’ll bring you a taste of Thailand without leaving the couch.

Yep, if you’ve ever wished you could glug down a bubble tea while watching The Crown on Netflix – now you can.

First up is Buono Boru Boru – the bubble tea dessert available in a tub. The frosty treat is free from gluten, dairy, artificial colours, artificial flavours, trans fats, preservatives and cholesterol. Don’t worry though, it’s not one of those healthy things that taste awful – it tastes just like the real thing. The range is coconut-based, blending the flavour of real brewed tea with chewy Boru Boru balls. You’ll experience a burst of flavour in every mouthful, just like sucking one up through your straw while drinking a bubble tea.

This dessert is currently available in two flavours – Thai Tea and Genmaicha (a combination of green tea and roasted rice).

    Untitled-design-2020-12-10T151043.177.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=80&w=1280&nr=20 Image: Buono

The second dessert is a frozen spin on the beloved Mochi ball and has been named Mochi Ice . This is a great snack if you’re on the go because it doesn’t require a spoon (which also makes it difficult not to eat the entire box in one sitting).

Inside each mochi pocket is a creamy, dairy-free frozen dessert that boasts a unique flavour and texture. The range is currently available in six flavours including strawberry, black sesame, vanilla, mango, chocolate and coconut. You’ll have to work your way through each one (maybe twice) to pick a favourite flavour but they’re all shaping up to be standouts.

With summer right around the corner, these healthier frozen treats couldn’t have landed at a better time. It’s time to dig out your biggest spoon and get to work, because bubble tea hour is officially every hour.

You can shop the entire Buono bubble tea dessert range here .

4 Fun Shows to Get Your Kids Into Cooking

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Sunday, 14 February, 2021 - 21:26 · 3 minutes

When the pandemic first hit and locked us in our homes, many of us were struck by the same bolt of inspiration (after we bought our toilet paper): We decided to bake bread. All that kneading, rising, and conjuring of the fresh bread smell in our homes was a thing we could focus on when life outside our front door felt too scary to navigate. Cooking and baking are good life skills to learn, but they can also serve to soothe and entertain when we need soothing and entertaining — which is why we should also share the experience with our kids.

Pulling out the flour and sugar to whip up some muffins with them is great. But we’ve all had a long year, so if what you really want is to curl up on the couch and watch someone else pull out the flour and sugar, your kids are probably going to be game for that, too. There some great cooking and baking shows out there for kids and families right now — and here are my favourites.

    The Great British Baking Show

There will be many shows on this list that are specifically geared toward kids or feature kid contestants. This is not that show, but I’m starting here anyway, because The Great British Baking Show is some truly wholesome, wonderful, heartwarming programming.

We blew through its most recent full season (season 11) quickly in my home because it had everything we needed: contestants who were encouraging of each other, funny banter between hosts, and a slew of desserts with names we’d never even heard of. (Care for a slice of Battenberg, anyone?)

(There is also a Junior Bake Off , but the British are mostly keeping it to themselves for the moment, unless you have a streaming VPN that will help you bypass their geo-restrictions .)

    Streaming on Netflix

    Nailed It!

Nailed It! is fun for kids because it’s all about adults (home chefs) competing against each other to recreate culinary masterpieces and largely…failing miserably. It helps to dispel a bit of the social media perfectionism we all experience (one person’s winking emoji cookie is another person’s wild-eyed disaster).

It’s an endearing show because it’s a little bit of a hot mess (in a friendly, goofy, whimsical way), and we’re all a little bit of a hot mess right now.

    Streaming on Netflix.

    Nadiya’s Time to Eat

Does cooking sometimes feel like a chore? Oh hell yes, of course it does , and Nadiya has decided it’s time we all embrace the beauty of the shortcut — she’s all about dinnertime (and dessert-time) hacks, which is why we love her. As a bonus, since her recipes are so quick to make, she also has time to travel a bit and visit the places where ingredients are born, such as a mushroom producer, a salmon farm, and a Heinz factory.

    Streaming on Netflix

Waffles + Mochi (With Michelle Obama)

I have to end not with a show that is already a favourite, but one I suspect will become a favourite. The former first lady, in keeping with her dedication to encourage kids to eat healthier, is launching a cooking show next month — with puppets. The Washington Post explains:

In addition to executive producing “Waffles + Mochi,” which debuts March 16, she’ll play the proprietor of a “whimsical supermarket” that employs the titular puppets, who are best friends and aspiring chefs. (One is an adorably small orb formed like the Japanese rice cake and the other a creature whose ears are shaped like the griddled breakfast treat.) “I’m excited for families and children everywhere to join us on our adventures as we discover, cook, and eat delicious food from all over the world,” she wrote in a tweet.

Streaming on Netflix starting March 16

Consider this list a starting point, as there are many other family-friendly cooking and baking shows out there worthy of a watch.

All the Appliances You Need to Whip up a Smart Kitchen

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Friday, 12 February, 2021 - 06:02 · 4 minutes

No matter what level of cook you are, introducing smart appliances and gadgets into your kitchen is a sure-fire way to boost your cooking skills. These appliances can help take off the stress of preparing certain meals through their multi-functionality, pre-programmed settings and constant feedback via phone apps.

We’ve collected a list of smart kitchen appliances that’ll help improve your meals, regardless of whether you’re a pro or novice. If you really want to go all out with your kitchen upgrades, you should also consider introducing some smart lighting and virtual assistants into your set up.

Inkbird Smart Wireless BBQ Thermometer ($27.19)

    wireless-thermo-e1613012210882.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=65&w=1280 Image: Amazon

Inkbird’s smart wireless thermometer is perfect for the busy chef. After you insert the stainless steel probe into your meat, you’re able to set up a timer and a high/low temperature alarm which will alert you via the phone app, so you can avoid overcooking or undercooking your meal.

The thermometer connects via Bluetooth with a range that’s just shy of 50m. Its temperature reading is accurate to ±1℃, with a the short time range of 0℃ to 310℃, and a continuous monitoring ranges from 0℃ to 250℃.

    RENPHO Digital Food Scale ($24.99)

    renpho-digi-scale.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=65&nrs=40 Image: RENPHO

This digital food scale will help you track and record your meal data, calculate calories and offer detailed nutritional info for portion control. Built with four high-precision load sensors to give you the most accurate reading possible, the scale also comes with a tare function, which lets you remove the container weight when measuring small ingredients.

This scale also includes a feature designed for coffee, which will tell you the ratio needed between coffee beans and water, along with a brewing timer.

Ninja Foodi Smart Pressure Cooker ($269.10)

    ninja-foodi-pressure-cooker-02.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=65&w=1280 Image: Amazon

If you love cooking but are tight on kitchen space, or maybe you’re a little less experienced and need something that can help you do everything, Ninja’s Foodi smart cooker might be the answer you need.

This smart cooker is your one stop pot. The Foodi uses a multi-functional cooking system, allowing you to pressure cook, slow cook, steam, sauté, brown, air fry, bake, roast, and grill. It even boasts the ability to make a fresh 2.3kg  chicken crispy in 40 minutes.

Ninja Intelli-Sense Smart Kitchen System ($335)

    ninja-kitchen-system.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=65&w=1280 Image: Amazon

Ninja’s Intelli-Sense Kitchen System isn’t one smart appliance, it’s four. It uses a smart base that has a set of smart programs which are specific to each of the interchangeable Smart Vessels.

It gives you a range of functions and cooking solutions without bulking out your cupboard with multiple appliances. The four Smart Vessels are the Total Crushing Pitcher, Precision Processor, High-Speed Blender Cup and Auto-Spiralizer.

You can use the Intelli-Sense to make a range of meals and drinks, from smoothies, to noodles, salsa and even pizza dough.

    Breville Smart Grill Pro ($399)

    smart-grill.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=65&w=1280 Image: Amazon

When cooking your meat to perfection, you need to be accurate with your temperature and times to ensure you get the correct doneness. You don’t want to aim for medium-rare and accidentally land on well done.

Breville’s Smart Grill Pro is designed to relieve some of that stress by giving accurate temperature readings and quick heat control. The Smart Grill Pro comes equiped with a stainless steel probe that will give you a precise reading of your meat’s temperature and also indicate when you need to remove it from the grill.

It also comes with programmed cooking settings for beef, lamb, pork, poultry and fish, so you can ensure you cook your meal to the doneness you need.

Ecovacs DEEBOT Robot Vacuum Cleaner ($569)

    deebot-osmo-920-e1613012039714.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=80&w=1280&nrs=40 Image: Ecovacs

Working hard to make a delicious meal? A great and rewarding time. Knowing that there’s a dirty kitchen waiting for you the moment you finish eating? Not so great and rewarding. While a robot vacuum cleaner won’t help you with that pile of dirty dishes sitting in your sink, it’ll take care of your dirty floors and give you one less thing to worry about.

Ecovacs’ DEEBOT Ozmo 920 can simultaneously vacuum and mop your floors, removing up to 99.26% of bacteria. The robot vacuum comes with programmable paths and routines, allowing you to choose when and where it will clean. You’re also able to pair it with Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, giving you hands free control.

Editor’s note: Descriptions and features are as taken from manufacturer/seller claims on Amazon.

The Weird Things Aussies Keep Asking Alexa

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Friday, 12 February, 2021 - 03:03 · 2 minutes

Amazon Alexa, aka the smart speaker that you secretly ask all your dumb questions, is celebrating three years in Australia. As it turns out, you probably weren’t the only one asking it for silly things over the past few years.

New stats gathered from Amazon’s first three years in Australia have revealed just how we’re using our smart speakers at home.

What do Australians want from a smart speaker?

Apparently, most of us, ie. 48%, are simply asking Alexa for the latest news and weather reports. But it only gets weirder from there.

The stats suggest that Aussies are requesting Alexa for insults four times as much as we’re asking for compliments. Also, did you know Alexa has some nifty mods like Pikachu Talk? I did not, but apparently many other Australians do because requests grew 270% year on year.

Requests also grew for totally normal robot things like asking Alexa to fart and talk like a dog. (We really have been stuck at home too long.)

Aussies also asked Alexa to stream music and in 2021 the top request was Tones and I’s ‘Dance Monkey’. That logic checks out seeing as I haven’t been able to get that song out of my head for any of the past 365 days.

Alexa also does some admittedly cool things like controlling your smart lights and doorbell, which is predicted to really take off in the next five years.

What else can you ask Alexa?

Now that we know what people have been asking for, let’s find out what you should be asking Alexa.

Digital Trends has put together some other weird requests to get a little joy out of your virtual assistant.

    • Ask Alexa to “meow”. Just like barking, Alexa can also make cat noises to confuse your pets.
    • Alexa can “cluck like a chicken”
    • “Alexa, who is the voice of Alexa?” – if you went to get really meta.
    • “How much do you weigh/how tall are you?” You can get personal, Alexa won’t mind.
    • “Alexa, do you know Siri?” Loaded question.
    • “Alexa, roll a die” – this is helpful if you’re playing a game
    • Chewbacca Chat activates Alexa’s Chewie voice.
    • Tell Alexa to “blow up” and see what happens
    • You can speak to Alexa in movie prompts, too. Try, “Alexa, I am your father.”
    • Did you also know Alexa can live translate into other languages? Very useful.

Get creative with your Alexa requests and she’s sure to be creative back. Don’t you just love it when you can interact with your inanimate smart speaker?

If you want to see the result of these prompts then go and grab yourself an Alexa from Amazon !

How To Choose A Portable Air Conditioner

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Friday, 12 February, 2021 - 01:50 · 5 minutes

During Australia’s particularly hotter months, those living without air conditioning can’t just rely on a cold change to sweep through before bedtime, making broken sleep in hot muggy bedrooms annoyingly regular.

A permanent air conditioning solution simply isn’t possible for many people – particularly those who are renting – and pedestal or ceiling fans can only do so much. This makes a portable air conditioner a decent option to consider.

There are plenty of choices out there when it comes to choosing the right unit for you and if you’re ready to drop between $200 and $1,000 on one, it pays to do your research. Here’s what you need to consider when choosing a portable air conditioner.

This article has been changed since original publication.

How much space can a portable air conditioner cool?

This is the most important question to ask when it comes to choosing the right model. Portable air conditioners are categorised by their power requirements in kW (kilowatts), the amount of heat they’re able to dissipate in BTU (British Thermal Units) or both. Generally speaking, the power requirements for most units will fall between 2.9kW and 5.2kW.

The one you choose really depends on the size of the room you’re trying to cool, so you’ll be best prepared after working out the size of the space in square metres. The smaller the room, the less it’ll need to cool down.

According to Canstar Blue , 20sqm can be cooled by a 2.8kW system, 30sqm by a 4.2kW system and 40sqm by a 5.6kW system. Of course, this is just a general guide and what you actually get will vary slightly, just as each model and brand of air conditioner will.

It’s also worth noting that a portable air conditioner probably won’t be able to cool multiple rooms, but its portability means you can take it from room to room with you providing there’s an adequate space for it to be set up in each. Some even come with wheels to make this easier, like this Carson PA200 II 4in1 Portable Air Conditioner .

    kogan.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=80&w=1280&nrs=40

Do portable air conditioners need to be installed?

You don’t need to hire a professional, but they do require some minor installation before you can start using them. You should be able to do this by yourself quite easily.

The majority of portable air conditioners work by sucking in the hot and humid air in your house and replacing it with cool air, which means it needs somewhere to dump all of that heat. This is generally done via a flexible hose that feeds from the unit and connects to a window.

Window kits are included with your portable air conditioner and are fairly easy to set up. Most will be a hose and slide that fits into horizontal or sliding windows.

    HTB1sSMcKh1YBuNjy1zcq6zNcXXaX.jpg?auto=format&fit=fill&q=80&w=1280&nr=20

It’s important that there’s a good seal at the window to prevent the hot air leaking back into the room you’re trying to cool. The hose should not be obstructed or contain too many bends, as this can make it difficult for the hot air to escape.

Allow for plenty of space around the unit, as any obstructions to the intake vents will affect efficiency.

There are also exhaust kits available for windows that wind out but you may have to purchase these separately.

How much should I spend on a portable air conditioner?

How much you spend will come down to what you want out of a portable air conditioner. If you’re just looking for a bit of relief in your bedroom on those hot, sticky nights, there are decent units like this one that are reasonably priced.

If cooling a larger area of your house is a priority, you’ll likely have to fork out a little more. Anything above the 4.7kW mark should have the power you need, but be wary that it’ll require more energy to run, which means more on your electricity bill. The Kogan SmarterHome 4.7kW Portable Air Conditioner is a well-priced unit with a fair bit of kick and has smart home functionality which allows you to switch it on or off when you’re out, set up schedules and more.

Outside of cooling ability, higher-priced units can offer things like quieter fans, better energy efficiency, smartphone connectivity, heating and dehumidifying modes, timers and more. This Dimplex unit , for example, was voted as one of the best by Canstar Blue.

How much do portable air conditioners cost to run?

While the upfront costs are smaller, they generally end up costing more in energy in the long run simply because they have to work harder to cool a space compared to a traditional split system.

The costs will depend on how much your electricity provider charges per kW, how hard your portable air conditioner has to work to cool a room and how efficient it is at doing so. According to Canstar Blue , a 2.1kW unit running at a rate of 30 cents per kW would cost 63 cents per hour to operate.

Over a year, this can certainly add up. Origin Energy estimates the costs of running a portable unit to be between $68 to $201 more per year when compared with a modern split system.

You can minimise running costs by being smart with how you use your system. Origin recommends setting the minimum temperature at 24 degrees Celcius, even if it’s a scorcher outside, as every degree under 24 uses 5% more energy.

Some portable air conditioners are capable of monitoring room temperature and will only turn on to maintain what you’ve set it to, which is another good way to save on usage.

    Is there any maintenance involved?

Units that come with dehumidifying functionality either have a drip tray that will need to be emptied or a drainage hose you’ll have to pop into a bucket or container to collect the water. More expensive models might come with a self-evaporative function that removes this maintenance.

You’ll also need to clean or change its filters, so it’s best to check the operating manual to see how often this needs to happen.

    Are they noisy?

They can be, but certainly not in a dangerous way. Standing next to my Kogan SmarterHome 4.1kW Portable Air Conditioner , I measured a fairly consistent reading of 65dB on a low fan setting. This is actually quieter than a large metal fan I use in another room, which runs at about 70dB on a medium. Normal conversation is considered to be at a volume of 60dB .

If I’m watching TV while it’s on I definitely have to kick up the volume a couple of notches, but it’s a small price to pay for relief on those blisteringly hot days.

These Valentine’s Day-Inspired Cocktails Will Get You in the Mood

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / LifehackerAustralia · Thursday, 11 February, 2021 - 05:45 · 2 minutes
