Kingpin is back with a snazzy eyepatch in trailer for darker, bloody Echo

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 3 November - 19:59

Echo is the first Marvel project to feature a deaf protagonist and the first series to air all five episodes at once.

If, like us, you miss the darker, more adult-oriented Netflix Defenders series ( Jessica Jones , Daredevil , Luke Cage , Punisher ), you'll be intrigued by the official trailer for Echo , which seems to be channeling some of the same gritty energy. In fact, it's the first Marvel project to earn a TV-MA rating and the first to feature a deaf protagonist. In other firsts, Marvel will drop all five episodes at once on both Disney and Hulu.

    (Spoilers for Hawkeye below.)

We've already met Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka Echo, in Hawkeye . She was the deaf commander of the Tracksuit Mafia, capable of perfectly copying another person's movements. And she was on a quest to discover the true identity of Ronin, the assassin who had killed her father. That put her on a collision course with Clint Barton/Hawkeye, who had hung up his Ronin gear for good.

The Walt Disney Company, which currently owns two-thirds of Hulu , is buying the remaining third from Comcast's NBCUniversal to "further [its] streaming objectives."

Disney's announcement Wednesday said it's expecting to pay "approximately" $8.61 billion for the remaining 33 percent stake in Hulu. That figure is based on a 2019 valuation of Hulu, pegging the streaming service's value at $27.5 billion.

But Disney noted that it may pay more than $8.61 billion, pending an appraisal. Disney said it's unsure how long the appraisal process will take but expects to complete the deal in 2024.

The TV streaming apps broke their promises, and now they’re jacking up prices

The TV streaming apps broke their promises, and now they’re jacking up prices

Enlarge (credit: Aurich Lawson | Getty Images)

This week, Disney+ and the Disney-controlled Hulu became the latest streaming video services to increase prices . Starting in October, the ad-free tier of Disney+ will rise from $11 to $14 a month, while ad-free Hulu will increase from $14 to $18 a month. Both services will also be offered together for $20 a month, and the ad-supported tiers will maintain their current pricing; both strategies seem intended to drive viewers to either sign up for multiple services or drop down to an ad-supported tier.

This is the second price hike for both services in the last calendar year, and most subscription services have been doing the same thing recently. Here are the big-name video streaming services that have increased their prices in the last 12 months (not counting bundles or other discounts or add-ons, all prices monthly):

Netflix Hulu (HBO) Max Disney+ Amazon Prime Video Apple TV+ Paramount+ Peacock
    Ad-free (before) $13.99 $12.99 $14.99 $7.99 $8.99 standalone, $12.99 with Prime $4.99 $9.99 $9.99
    Ad-free (after) $15.49 $17.99 $15.99 $13.99 $8.99 standalone, $14.99 with Prime $6.99 $11.99 $11.99
    With ads (before) N/A (launched November 2022) $6.99 $9.99 N/A (launched December 2022) N/A, but " in talks " N/A, but hiring personnel $4.99 $4.99
    With ads (after) $6.99 $7.99 $9.99 $7.99 N/A N/A $5.99 $5.99

And that's just capturing price increases from the last year or so; many of these services have increased prices steadily over the last two or three years, as subscriber growth has slowed or declined . If you pay for more than a couple of these services (and especially if you pay for music, games, or other software on top of your streaming apps), your prices have either gone up a lot in the last year, or you've decided to let TV advertising back into your life.

We saw it before with HBO Max and others, but Disney has now joined the content-cutting party. More than two dozen series and movies will be removed from Disney-owned streaming channels Disney+ and Hulu come May 26.

The list of shows removed notably includes Willow , the single-season TV series follow-up to the beloved 1988 cult-classic fantasy movie directed by Ron Howard. The Willow series premiered in November 2022 but struggled to find an audience.

Other notably cut content includes but is not limited to The World According to Jeff Goldblum , a couple of Marvel-themed documentaries, and several kids programs.

    Disney+ plus Hulu equals Disnulu?

Someone may or may not come up with a better name than that, but by the end of 2023, there will be a new streaming app combining the libraries of Disney+ and Hulu, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed during an earnings call last night.

Iger clarified that customers will still be able to sign up for Disney+ or Hulu only—or ESPN+ only, for that matter. However, the new app will bring a "one-app experience" in the US with Disney+ and Hulu's selection of movies and TV shows.
