Report: Apple and Goldman Sachs are breaking up over money-losing Apple Card

Report: Apple and Goldman Sachs are breaking up over money-losing Apple Card

Apple has repeatedly trumpeted the success of its financial services, a product lineup that now encompasses the Apple Card credit card, high-interest savings accounts, and a buy-now-pay-later service called Apple Pay Later .

But even if those products have proven reasonably popular with consumers, they haven’t been working out for the bank that Apple has partnered with to supply those services. Goldman Sachs’ consumer services have been losing the company billions of dollars, according to reporting from Bloomberg , CNBC , and The New York Times , among others. These losses have been driven in part by a much higher-than-usual loss rate on its credit card loans—meaning that people with Goldman-backed credit cards like the Apple Card are actually making their payments less often than people with credit cards from other banks.

Today, The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has sent Goldman Sachs a proposal that will end their partnership within the next 12 to 15 months, leaving Apple to find a new backer for its financial products.

Qi2’s wireless charging brings magnets—and slightly faster speeds

Qi2 is either a big step forward or a "Wait, that's it?" moment, depending on what kind of wireless charging you're used to using.

If you've only ever used standard Qi chargers with devices that don't have their own schemes, the Wireless Power Consortium's announcement today of the first Qi 2.0 devices being ready to launch before the holidays, with more than 100 in the queue behind them, is great. Qi2 sports a "Magnetic Power Profile" (MPP), created with help by Apple's MagSafe team, to help align devices and chargers' coils for faster, more efficient charging. Qi2-certified devices set onto Qi2 chargers can achieve 15 W charging, up from 7.5 W in the standard Qi scheme.

That brings Qi2 devices up to the same speed as iPhones on MagSafe chargers, and it clears up some consumer confusion about how fast a device might charge on Qi, MagSafe, or proprietary chargers. Should a phone and charger be Qi2 certified, you can now expect about 15 W out of it, regardless of whatever Google, Apple, or third party is behind them. Android and iPhone users alike are no longer beholden to their primary hardware vendor if they want 15 W of wireless juice.

Some owners of the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have reported over the last week and a half that they've noticed their phones running a bit warmer than older iPhones. We observed that the phones could run hot while working on our review , "sometimes to the point that they were uncomfortable to hold without a case," and other reviewers and users have noticed the issue as well.

The problem is real and serious enough to have merited an official response from Apple over the weekend, shared with MacRumors and other outlets. Apple says the main culprit at first is "increased background activity" that occurs as users set up their new phones for the first time (which I've also noticed in other iPhones and iPads and is pretty typical).

But Apple also says it has identified "a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users" and that specific apps like Uber, Instagram, and the game Asphalt 9: Legends are all "overload[ing] the system" and causing heat problems. The company is working with those apps' developers on fixes that will be distributed via the App Store.

iPhone 15 and 15 Pro review: The final form

It’s been six years since the iPhone X hit store shelves, but at a glance, 2023’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro aren't all that different. Thanks to a few steps of iteration, though, these smartphones still feel like a big step up—maybe not compared to last year’s iPhone, but certainly compared to 2017's, or even 2020’s.

Though I don’t have any insight into what’s coming next year, the iPhone 15 seems like the final form of a product that has gone through a multi-year cycle. It sees Apple cementing a likely long-term strategy of treating the cheaper model as a rerun of the previous year’s pro model, it addresses one of the longest-standing complaints about iPhones (even if Apple’s hand was forced by regulation), and it refines a tried-and-true design.

The iPhone 15, its pricier siblings, and its strong competitors on the Android side make the case that for better or worse (mostly better), we’ve reached peak smartphone.
