When you think of the future of transportation, you probably don’t think of water dragons like those in director James Cameron’s newest Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water , which will be released on December 16. You might think of something more along the lines of the Mercedes-AVTR, which Mercedes debuted just before the pandemic at CES in 2020 .
The collaboration between the producers and directors of the newest Avatar movie and the automobile company may seem like an unlikely one—after all, there are no cars in the movie, and the Vision AVTR does not appear on-screen. Yet, after spending an afternoon driving this out-of-this-world concept and getting a behind-the-scenes look at the new movie, it makes pretty good sense.
"Avatar as a movie as an IP across all the things we do, has something that a lot of movies don't have, which is an ethos," Jon Landau, COO of Lightstorm Entertainment and Academy Award-winning producer of Avatar , said via video conference at the event we attended in Manhattan Beach, California.

James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water has an official trailer.
Director James Cameron has spent more than a decade making the first of a planned four sequels to his 2009 blockbuster film Avatar. We got our first peek at the first of those sequels, Avatar: The Way of Water, in May with a brief, visually stunning teaser that showcased Cameron's undisputed skill at world-building. Yet despite enthusiasm for the visuals, the overall response was fairly muted. Perhaps more audience excitement for the upcoming film will emerge now that we have the full official trailer.
As we've reported previously , Cameron wrote a treatment for Avatar way back in 1994, and it was supposed to be the director's next big project after he wrapped his blockbuster Titanic . But Cameron realized the technology did not yet exist to make the film he envisioned. He spent several years working to develop what he needed, including a cutting-edge virtual camera system to direct the motion-capture scenes. (He compared it to "a big, powerful game engine.")
The finished film set new box office records upon its release; it was the highest-grossing film until Avengers: Endgame briefly took the top spot in 2019. (A March 2021 Chinese rerelease put Avatar back on top.) Critics were mostly positive, praising the technological achievements, although some pointed out that the storytelling suffered. Cameron also consulted with multiple scientists while designing the world of Pandora (a moon orbiting a gas giant exoplanet called Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri A system). Avatar was nominated for nine Oscars, ultimately winning Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.

James Cameron is finally bringing a sequel to 2009's Avatar to theaters with Avatar: The Way of Water .
If you ventured into the theater to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend, you probably got to see the first teaser for Avatar: The Way of Water , the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 science-fiction blockbuster Avatar . Director James Cameron has spent more than a decade making the first of a planned four sequels, a large fraction of which takes place in underwater environments.

CINÉMA - Une attente interminable! 13 ans après ans après la sortie d’Avatar au cinéma, la suite de l’œuvre de James Cameron, Avatar: La Voie de l’Eau , a été dévoilée dans une bande-annonce partagée ce lundi 9 mai par 20th Century Studios.
Dans cette vidéo d′1 minute 38, à découvrir en tête de cet article , on retrouve la planète Pandora et ses habitants à la peau bleue nager et s’élancer dans les airs. L’intrigue se concentrera autour de Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) et Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), les deux principaux protagonistes du premier opus, sorti en 2009.
Leur vie idyllique, proche de la nature, est menacée lorsque la Resources Development Administration, dangereuse organisation non-gouvernementale, est de retour sur Pandora. Contraints de quitter leur habitat naturel, Jake et sa famille se rendent sur les récifs, où ils pensent trouver asile. Mais ils tombent sur un clan, les Metkayina, aux mœurs différentes des leurs...
Sigourney Weaver, continuera d’incarner le personnage de Grace Augustine, à la tête du programme Avatar dans le premier film.
Avatar 2 devait initialement sortir dans les salles en 2014. Mais le long-métrage a été repoussé à sept reprises au fil des années. Il a finalement été enregistré en même temps que le troisième volet de la saga. Le tournage des deux films s’est (enfin) achevé en 2020.
James Cameron , qui s’est entièrement consacré à la suite de la saga depuis le premier Avatar , a promis des progrès technologiques spectaculaires par rapport au premier opus. Le film en 3D avait déjà marqué les esprits avec ses effets spéciaux spectaculaires.

Avatar: The Way of Water sera sur les écrans en France le 14 décembre prochain et devrait être suivi par trois autres épisodes de cette saga, dont le film original a récolté 2,8 milliards de dollars depuis sa sortie.
Il reste à l’heure actuelle le plus gros succès au box-office mondial , devant Avengers: Endgame , sorti en 2019 (2,79 milliards de dollars) et un autre chef d’œuvre de James Cameron: l’incontournable Titanic avec Leonardo DiCaprio et Kate Winslet, sorti en 1997 (2,4 milliards de dollars).
Les volets suivants de la saga Avatar constitueront des films indépendants des autres, avec des intrigues différentes. Les quatre épisodes ne feront pas partie d’un arc narratif mais, pris ensemble, représenteront “une saga épique d’encore plus grande envergure”, a déclaré le producteur Jon Landau.
À l’approche de la sortie tant attendue, pour replonger le public dans le monde de Pandora, le studio ressortira le premier Avatar au cinéma le 23 septembre aux États-Unis et le 21 septembre en France.
