    All you had to do, if you really wanted some free coffee and doughnuts, was wake up around 3 am each day and click on some virtual Tim Hortons coffee cups.

    It was 3:16 am, actually, that gave a University of Waterloo professor a roughly 80 percent win rate on Tim Hortons' Roll Up To Win game. That wasn't as good as the 98 percent Michael Wallace clocked in early 2020, when he discovered a quirk in the coffee chain's prize distribution scheme, but it still made for great lessons for his students.

    "I really like the fact that you can take data from the real world, run it through some math, and find patterns that describe what you see," Wallace told his university's news service . "It's a kind of magic."

    Quantum computing has entered a bit of an awkward period. There have been clear demonstrations that we can successfully run quantum algorithms, but the qubit counts and error rates of existing hardware mean that we can't solve any commercially useful problems at the moment. So, while many companies are interested in quantum computing and have developed software for existing hardware (and have paid for access to that hardware), the efforts have been focused on preparation. They want the expertise and capability needed to develop useful software once the computers are ready to run it.

    For the moment, that leaves them waiting for hardware companies to produce sufficiently robust machines—machines that don't currently have a clear delivery date. It could be years; it could be decades. Beyond learning how to develop quantum computing software, there's nothing obvious to do with the hardware in the meantime.

    But a company called QuEra may have found a way to do something that's not as obvious. The technology it is developing could ultimately provide a route to quantum computing. But until then, it's possible to solve a class of mathematical problems on the same hardware, and any improvements to that hardware will benefit both types of computation. And in a new paper, the company's researchers have expanded the types of computations that can be run on their machine.

    I have included a link for NUAR UK Emergency Alerts (Cabinet Office) but really I would say it could do with a low cost tweak to also allow UK government square-wave data (sounding somewhat like a dial-up modem handshake sound to the human ear) to be received via RADIO (such as a FM car radio) onto a RaspberryPi (which would be expected to have installed a LoRaWAN dongle for public responding) for software updates such as torrent magnet links and bearing co-ordinates and cronjob date-time-stamps and longditude-latitude-altitude and MIDI (which cane be used for music or PC joystick or vehicle control like a drone since it even was used in guided missles in the past) to be processed in linux accepted via microphone-in 3.5mm jack plug (via USB soundcard on the RaspberryPi3b or PiZero2W) or via rtl2832u or buetooth (such as sent from a car-stereo bluetooth link, with or without a bluetooth headset earphone-and-microphone). Having a UK Gov AppImage (both RaspberryPi and amd64 compatible) on the receiving Linux device (PC or Pi3b) linked via the aforementioned technologies (3.5mm jack or bluetooth or rtl2832u) to the car-radio would allow for password authentication of installing a shellscript for every NUAR squarewave update which need only be up to 100KB but probably only needs about 3KB data sent like a DamnSmallLinux torrent file needs, notifying the need to connect to internet to download 50MB of data later that day as a bootable ISO that can be written to CDROM. About a minute of analogue FM Radio squarewave sound should transmit (from UK gov to a public radio connected to a RaspberryPi zero2w or Pi3b at home or in a car) 150KB to 300KB of data and so the signal being sent twice for parity of that 1 minute data signal should last 2 minutes and you probably do not even need that much data. The magnet-links sent could also include private firm sponsorship adverts in some scenarios.

      How I made a £12 donation to International Rescue Committee

    In time for New Year 2023, I made a £12 donation to International Rescue committee via Paypal, so Happy New Year! I show how I did it and it may help others learn how I did it, if they are already considering donating too. I understand IRC also send money to other places (Afghanistan, Yemen and so on).     The Paypal screenshot arrows show what I clicked in chronological order.

    1: (Once logged into paypal) Clicked the One-Time Donaation option

    2: Entered £12 as "other" amount (minimum usually being $10 or similar in UK), like 12 months in a year, 12 hours or a zodiac or unit circle of 10 degrees when tripled.

    3: Clicked payment information, checking paypal was still logged-in.

    4: Selected "Paypal" radio button.

    5: I left the "Covering process costs" unticked to keep the donation simple for people to follow so the £12 was an overtly known quantity.

    6: I enabled the radio button for email contact but left SMS and phone unchecked to keep all communications medium a single known quantity and easy to follow when reading.

    7: I left SMS communications unchecked, as in disallowed.

    8: left phone communications unchecked as in disallowed.

    9: I left the tick-box for Gift Aid unchecked not only for simplicity but also so that no pressure is put on people reading my words to use Gift Aid which has taxation and thereby political viewpoints. If people want to add tax Gift-Aid, then that is there call. Just for the record, this stance on indicators of political matters is an indicator that my donation to this (largely) Ukraine IRC appeal is not anti-Russia either (not that you'd assume that). And anyway, Russians and Ukrainians marry and have children.

    10: I clicked the "Make a One-time donation", option.

    11: I clicked "agree and continue" to confirm the £12 would be donated via Paypal.

    12: It processed for about a minute or maybe less and then asked if I wanted to change this one-time donation to a monthly regular donation. I clicked "no thanks". This keeps the pressure low on people reading who might wish to donate. Also it could seem confusing as to how the winter Ukraine donation (which ends by 2023) could still be tripled or not. It would seem this one time donation of £12 becomes £36 if tripled at their end.

    13: I made note of 707338 being my order number.

    14: Visiting the Paypal account, I checked the £12 donation had succeeded and saw was the 1XE05902AR2686148 transaction ID sitting next to my 707338 order number and observed that the page could be printed (e.g. on paper or PDF).     I have included a link for NUAR UK Emergency Alerts (Cabinet Office) but really I would say it could do with a low cost tweak to also allow UK government square-wave data (sounding somewhat like a dial-up modem handshake sound to the human ear) to be received via RADIO (such as a FM car radio) onto a RaspberryPi (which would be expected to have installed a LoRaWAN dongle for public responding) for software updates such as torrent magnet links and bearing co-ordinates and cronjob date-time-stamps and longditude-latitude-altitude and MIDI (which cane be used for music or PC joystick or vehicle control like a drone since it even was used in guided missles in the past) to be processed in linux accepted via microphone-in 3.5mm jack plug (via USB soundcard on the raspberryPi3b or piZero2W) or via rtl2832u or buetooth (such as sent from a car-stereo bluetooth link, with or without a bluetooth headset earphone-and-microphone). Having a UK Gov AppImage (both RaspberryPi and amd64 compatible) on the receiving Linux device (PC or Pi3b) linked via the aforementioned technologies (3.5mm jack or bluetooth or rtl2832u) to the car-radio would allow for password authentication of installing a shellscript for every NUAR squarewave update which need only be up to 100KB but probably only needs about 3KB data sent like a DamnSmallLinux torrent file needs, notifying the need to connect to internet to download 50MB of data later that day as a bootable ISO that can be written to CDROM. About a minute of analogue FM Radio squarewave sound should transmit (from UK gov to a public radio connected to a RaspberryPi zero2w or Pi3b at home or in a car) 150KB to 300KB of data and so the signal being sent twice for parity of that 1 minute data signal should last 2 minutes and you probably do not even need that much data. The magnet-links sent could also include private firm sponsorship adverts in some scenarios.

But people kept requesting it, and after thinking about it I figured I could give thickness to the lines by sweeping a circle across the 2D surface to get a 3D surface. This would look way better than simply extruding the Klein Bottle in 4D.</p> <p>I also wanted to use this update as an opportunity to make a great video about Klein Bottles because the current ones on YouTube are in my opinion unnecessarily confusing. For example I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s good to start with how the Klein bottle is two Möbius strips glued together. And I knew I could make better illustrations of the constructions.</p> <p>Also, and importantly, none of the previous Klein bottle videos on YouTube properly explain the 4D part of it (the fact that a Klein Bottle has to self-intersect in 3D, but not in 4D). And as a bonus you get how the Klein Bottle is made out of two Möbius strips in an incredibly straightforward way&#8230;</p> <p>It was obvious to me that the same construction could be done in higher dimensions to make what I call a &#8220;Spherinder Klein Bottle&#8221; which is a 3D version of the 2D Klein Bottle. Well, technically the &#8220;thickened&#8221; 2D Klein bottle in 4D Toys is also three-dimensional, but in a less interesting way since it&#8217;s just the Cartesian product of the 2D Klein Bottle with a 1D circle&#8230; Anyway, interestingly it looks almost simpler when sliced than the 2D Klein bottle.</p> <p>Relatedly, because people have asked me before: yes there is a Klein bottle in <a href="https://miegakure.com">Miegakure</a>, and it shows up in a yet another unexpected way.</p> <p>As always, thank you for your patience and enthusiasm!</p> <p>By the way, I&#8217;ve decided to more seriously update the <a href="https://www.patreon.com/marctenbosch">Patreon</a> I originally made for my <a href="https://marctenbosch.com/quaternions/">quaternion article/video</a>. I describe the state and equations of motion of rigid bodies using geometric algebra. Using collision detection algorithms extended to nD I resolve collisions and contact between bodies. My implementation is 4D, but the techniques described here apply to any number of dimensions. I display these four-dimensional rigid bodies by taking a three-dimensional slice through them. However, <strong>Quaternions are taught at face value</strong>. We just accept their odd multiplication tables and other arcane definitions and use them as black boxes that rotate vectors in the ways we want. Why does $\mathbf{i}^2=\mathbf{j}^2=\mathbf{k}^2=-1$ and $\mathbf{i} \mathbf{j} = \mathbf{k}$? Why do we take a vector and upgrade it to an &#8220;imaginary&#8221; vector in order to transform it, like $\mathbf{q} (x\mathbf{i} + y\mathbf{j} + z \mathbf{k}) \mathbf{q}^{*}$? Who cares as long as it rotates vectors the right way, right?</p> <p>Personally, I have always found it <strong>important to actually understand the things I am using</strong>. I remember learning about Cross Products and Quaternions and being confused about why they worked this way, but nobody talked about it. Later on I learned about <i>Geometric Algebra</i> and suddenly I could see that the questions I had were legitimate, and everything became so much clearer.</p> <p>In Geometric Algebra there is a way to represent rotations called a <i>Rotor</i> that <strong>generalizes</strong> Quaternions (in 3D) and Complex Numbers (in 2D) and even works in any number of dimensions. </p> <p>3D Rotors are in a sense <strong>the true form</strong> of quaternions, or in other words Quaternions are an <strong>obfuscated</strong> version of Rotors. They are equivalent in that they have the same number of components, their API is the same, they are as efficient, they are good for interpolation and avoiding gimbal lock, etc&#8230; in fact, they are isomorphic, so it is possible to do some math to turn a rotor into a quaternion, <strong>but doing so makes them less general and less intuitive</strong> (and loses extra capabilites). </p> <p>But instead of defining Quaternions out of nowhere and trying to explain how they work <strong>retroactively</strong>, it is possible to explain Rotors <strong>almost entirely from scratch</strong>. This obviously takes more time, but I find it is very much worth it because it makes them much easier to understand!</p> <img src="https://marctenbosch.com/quaternions/planets.png" alt="Earth-Centric planetary motion" class="inmargin" width="200"> <p>For example, Quaternions are introduced as this mysterious four-dimensional object, but why introduce a fourth dimension of space to visualize a 3D concept? By contrast 3D Rotors do not require the use of a fourth dimension of space in order to be visualized.</p> <p>Trying to visualize quaternions as operating in 4D just to explain 3D rotations is a bit like trying to understand planetary motion from an earth-centric perspective i.e. overly complex because you are looking at it from the wrong viewpoint.</p> <p>It would be great if we could start phasing out the use and teaching of Quaternions and replace them with Rotors. The change is simple and <strong>the <a href="code.htm" style="color: black">code</a> remains almost the same, but the understanding grows a lot.</strong> </p> <p>As a side note, Geometric Algebra contains more than just Rotors, and is a very useful tool to have in one&#8217;s toolbox. I felt a brief flush of anger when I saw this headline. But I thought it was time to let go and release it anyway. I actually think it is hurting the advancement of science that people are still mainly using quaternions instead of Geometric Algebra, so holding on to it was not good.</p> <p>So last fall/summer I cleaned up some of the diagrams and made a 15 minute long video that follows the article exactly. I never made a video this long, and it was quite exhausting. But I thought it would be really cool to make an article that is perfectly synced to a video, so you can either read it or watch it, and the article serves as an exact table of contents for the video. </p> <p>I think I came across Geometric Algebra from attending SIGGRAPH a long time ago? Specifically this book: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0123749425/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0123749425&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=martenbos-20">Geometric Algebra for Computer Science by Dorst et al.</a> Later on I found this great book: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1453854932/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=miegakure-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1453854932">Linear and Geometric Algebra by Macdonald</a></p> <p>Geometric Algebra soon came in handy for Miegakure, specifically to define the 4D equivalent to Quaternions, <a href="https://marctenbosch.com/news/2011/05/4d-rotations-and-the-4d-equivalent-of-quaternions/">which I posted about on this blog</a>. Later on it became the backbone of 4D Toys. </p> <p>Learning about Geometric Algebra was also great because it answered so many questions I had when learning linear algebra, the cross product, quaternions, etc… <strong>I basically wrote this article for my past self as a college student.</strong> </p> <p>I recently rewrote the introduction to add more detail about the properties of Rotors and how they relate to quaternions. Even though the content went into detail, it should now be clear what Rotors are from only reading the introduction. I can already see from reading recent comments that it was worth it.</p> <p> I deliberately picked a cheeky click-bait title&#8230;</p> <p>Something else that might be of interest is the history of Geometric Algebra, so I recently added a heavily summarized version to the <a href="https://marctenbosch.com/quaternions/#history">end of the article</a>. I think looking at the history makes it clearer <em>how </em>the quaternion viewpoint stayed in people&#8217;s minds for longer than necessary&#8230;</p>
