      Microsoft Edge – Quand suivre les créateurs met en danger votre vie privée

    Le saviez-vous ? Le navigateur Microsoft Edge et une fonctionnalité pour le moins étonnante qui pourrait mettre en péril votre précieuse vie privée.

    Pour ceux qui ne sont pas au courant, voici un résumé rapide des faits : il semblerait que lorsque nous naviguons avec Microsoft Edge, l’URL des sites qu’on visite soit envoyée vers l’API de Bing (qui appartient également à Microsoft).

    Eh oui… Big Brother est toujours là pour veiller sur vos données !

    Ce lièvre a été soulevé par des utilisateurs de Reddit – merci les gars – ainsi que Rafael Rivera, ingénieur logiciel et développeur chez EarTrumpet . Le souci proviendrait donc d’une fonction mal implémentée dans ce bon vieux Edge… MOUAIS, COMME DE PAR HASARD !

    Alors concrètement, d’où vient ce problème ???
    Et bien cela fait déjà quelques mois maintenant que Microsoft teste une nouvelle option permettant aux utilisateurs du navigateur Edge de pouvoir facilement suivre leurs créatrices ou créateurs préféré(e)s sur YouTube ou sur le Web en général.

    Cette fonctionnalité, nommée de manière très originale ^^ : « Suivre les créateurs » a été déployée plus largement très récemment. Le problème est que même si vous ne l’utilisez pas, vos URL sont tout de même envoyées à Bing API. Paye ta vie privée.

    Mais pour autant, pas de panique ! Je vais vous donner l’astuce ultime pour remédier au problème !

    Il suffit de désactivez la fonction « Suivre les créateurs ». Ça sert à rien, ça pompe vos données, donc bye bye !!

    Même si du côté de Microsoft on semble prendre ce souci très au sérieux – puisqu’ils enquêtent actuellement dessus… De vrais Colombo -, je préférais quand même vous avertir.

    Microsoft appears to be testing a built-in cryptocurrency wallet for Edge, according to screenshots pulled from a beta build of the browser. The feature, which the screenshots say is strictly for internal testing, was unearthed by Twitter user @thebookisclosed , who has a history of digging up present-but-disabled features in everything from new Windows 11 builds to ancient Windows Vista betas .

    This is only one of many money and shopping-related features that Microsoft has bolted onto Edge since it was reborn as a Chromium-based browser a few years ago. In late 2021, the company faced backlash after adding a "buy now, pay later" short-term financing feature to Edge. And as an Edge user, the first thing I do in a new Windows install is disable the endless coupon code, price comparison, and cash-back pop-ups generated by Shopping in Microsoft Edge (many settings automatically sync between Edge browsers when you sign in with a Microsoft account; the default search engine and all of these shopping add-ons need to be changed manually every time).

    According to the screenshots, the crypto wallet is "embedded in Edge, making it easy to use without installing any extension," and it can handle multiple types of cryptocurrency. It will also record transactions and the value of your individual currencies as they fluctuate. An "explore" tab offers news stories relevant to cryptocurrency, and an "assets" tab will let you stare lovingly at your NFTs. The wallet is "non-custodial" (also called "self-custodial"), meaning that you have sole ownership of and responsibility for the passwords and recovery keys that allow access to your funds. Microsoft won't be able to let you back in if you lose your credentials.

    Internet Explorer 11 was never Windows 10's primary browser—that would be the old, pre-Chromium version of Microsoft Edge. But IE did continue to ship with Windows 10 for compatibility reasons, and IE11 remained installed and accessible in most versions of Windows 10 even after security updates for the browser ended in June of 2022 . That ends today, as Microsoft's support documentation says that a Microsoft Edge browser update will fully disable Internet Explorer in most versions of Windows 10, redirecting users to Edge.

    Edge will "automatically" transfer over bookmarks and other browsing data from IE and display a dialogue box letting users know what has happened so that the last few people using Internet Explorer out of habit, ignorance, or spite will be fully aware of what's going on. Clicking any IE icon or attempting to launch it from the Start or Run menus will automatically open Edge instead.

    Microsoft never shipped any version of Internet Explorer in Windows 11, so nothing will change if you're already running Microsoft's latest OS.

    Support for Windows 7 and 8 fully ends in January, including Microsoft Edge

    Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge browser was an improvement over the initial version of Edge in many ways, including its support for Windows 7 and Windows 8. But the end of the road is coming: Microsoft has announced that Edge will end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 in mid-January of 2023 , shortly after those operating systems stop getting regular security updates. Support will also end for Microsoft Edge Webview2 , which can use Edge's rendering engine to embed webpages in non-Edge apps.

    The end-of-support date for Edge coincides with the end of security update support for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 on January 10, and the end of Google Chrome support for Windows 7 and 8 in version 110 . Because the underlying Chromium engine in both Chrome and Edge is open source, Microsoft could continue supporting Edge in older Windows versions if it wanted, but the company is using both end-of-support dates to justify a clean break for Edge.

    If you thought that Windows 7 had already stopped getting security updates, you’re not wrong. Most people stopped receiving general-purpose security updates for Windows 7 back in 2020 , around a decade after its original release. But because Windows 7 was so popular with businesses, Microsoft took the unusual step of offering three additional years of optional, paid update support for the operating system. Those updates are ending now, too; a similar program is not being offered for the significantly less popular Windows 8, which is just past its 10-year anniversary .
