Letter to staff from building society’s union says move will lead to about 125 job losses, taking cuts over past year to nearly 800

Nationwide building society has put more than 300 people’s jobs at risk in the lender’s third round of cuts over the past 12 months as bosses push ahead with a major restructuring plan.

A letter sent to staff by Nationwide’s employee union, and seen by the Guardian, explains that the latest redundancies will affect workers across its retail service, customer resolutions, support and retail-risk divisions.

Nationwide has told the 13,000 staff it had said would not be forced to return to the office when Covid lockdowns ended that they must start coming in from early next year for at least two days a week for most.

During the coronavirus crisis the UK’s biggest building society unveiled one of the most far-reaching flexible working policies, called “work anywhere”, telling all staff who did not work in its branches that it was “putting our employees in control of where they work from”.
