David Cameron says Aukus and Nato must be in ‘best possible shape’ ahead of potential Trump win

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Friday, 22 March - 07:58

UK’s foreign secretary is in Australia alongside defence secretary Grant Shapps for high-level talks with Richard Marles and Penny Wong

The UK foreign secretary, David Cameron, has suggested the Aukus pact and Nato alliance must get into “the best possible shape” to increase their chances of surviving Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House.

Speaking after high-level talks in Australia, Cameron was careful to avoid criticising the former US president and presumptive Republican nominee for 2024, saying it was “up to America who they choose as their president”.

Nato should not appoint Mark Rutte without broader discussion, says Latvia

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 14 March - 13:29

Foreign minister says candid talk has been lacking over secretary general’s post, as newer members feel they are being railroaded

Nato should not appoint the outgoing Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte as secretary general without first holding a broader discussion about the alliance’s future challenges, the Latvian foreign minister has said.

Krišjānis Kariņš’ remarks reflect a feeling among some of the newer member states that they are being railroaded into backing Rutte by the major Nato powers, without a debate about Nato’s future needs.

Sweden’s veteran peace movement stung by ‘reckless’ entry to Nato

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 11 March - 07:00

Activists say public debate has been shut down by overhyped claims of imminent war since Ukraine invasion

The Swedish flag will be raised on Monday outside Nato’s HQ in Brussels. But while the prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, basks in the glow of his country finally joining the western military alliance after months of delays, Sweden’s once thriving peace movement is smarting.

Once widely visible in debates and on the streets – particularly over nuclear weapons, disarmament and the Vietnam war – the movement had already been on the wane since the end of the cold war.

Airbus boss warns of threat to Europe from Russia and Trump

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 11 March - 06:00

Aerospace group chief executive urges UK and Europe to pool efforts and merge fighter jet programmes

Europe is unprepared for war with Russia or the risk that Donald Trump could withdraw the US from Nato and needs to ramp up spending on defence equipment, the boss of Airbus has said.

Guillaume Faury, the chief executive of Europe’s biggest aerospace and defence company, said it was a “defining moment” for the continent’s defence industry, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 brought war to western Europe’s borders.

Germany’s reputation for decisive leadership is in tatters when Europe needs it most | Simon Tisdall

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Saturday, 9 March - 17:01

Olaf Scholz’s endless dithering over Ukraine is playing into Putin’s hands

National stereotypes are unfair, insulting – and strangely reassuring. It’s somehow good to know in an unpredictable, fast-changing world that Italians may be relied upon to be melodramatic, the French rude, the Americans loud and the English drunk. When nations act out of character, and refuse to conform to type, it feels a little disconcerting.

This seems to be what’s happening in Germany today as Europe looks on, perplexed. What has become of that hackneyed Teutonic efficiency, decisiveness, reliability and steely-eyed determination? The past victors of countless poolside deckchair skirmishes now flirt with chaos in ways that make Westeros look well ordered.

Sweden finally joins Nato after nearly two-year wait

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 7 March - 16:42

Hungary dropping opposition allows historically neutral country to become member, cementing alliance’s control of Nordic region

Sweden has officially became the 32nd member of Nato, in a landmark moment for the historically neutral country and the western military alliance.

Stockholm’s ratification process was finally completed in Washington on Thursday, as Sweden and Hungary – the last country to ratify Sweden’s membership – submitted the necessary documents after a drawn-out process that has taken nearly two years.

Sweden is joining Nato, but it’s hopelessly unprepared for war | Martin Gelin

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Friday, 1 March - 07:00

After two centuries of peace, and a fire-sale of public infrastructure, the country has never been so vulnerable

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 came as a rude awakening for Sweden. Across the country people suddenly realised that national security vulnerabilities were everywhere. The entire public transit rail network in Stockholm, for example, is operated by MTR, a Hong Kong-based company with ties to the Chinese Communist party .

In the event of Stockholm being attacked by foreign forces, most of the detail about critical infrastructure and tunnels running under the city centre – home to the Swedish parliament, the prime minister’s residence, the state department, the royal castle – could be shared with enemies.

Putin, Trump, production capacity: the defence challenges facing Europe

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 26 February - 10:36

It is generally agreed Europe needs to more on defence, but questions remain about how much and how fast this can be achieved

Europe is racing to avoid a “blame game” on defence as it grapples with how to increase production amid a serious ammunition shortage in Ukraine and growing questions over the future of US support.

As Ukraine enters the third year of Russia’s full-scale invasion and worries mount about the US commitment to Nato, politicians, diplomats and experts largely agree that Europe needs to do more on defence. The fraught topic will no doubt be on the agenda as about 20 European leaders gather in Paris on Monday to send Vladimir Putin a message of European resolve.

Hungary set to finally approve Sweden joining Nato

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 26 February - 10:15

Yes vote expected nearly two years after historically neutral country applied to join military alliance

Hungary’s parliament is finally expected to vote in favour of Sweden’s Nato membership – bringing to an end months of limbo and diplomatic wrangling – nearly two years after the historically neutral country applied to join the western military alliance.

The vote, expected to take place in Budapest on Monday between 4pm and 6pm local time (3pm and 5pm GMT), follows Friday’s meeting between the Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, and his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orbán, in which they agreed to put aside their differences – saying they were “prepared to die for each other” .
