Preview: Final Fantasy XVI is a bold new direction for the series

In so many ways, Final Fantasy XVI wants you to abandon everything you know about the franchise. It’s an action RPG with a heavy emphasis on the “action” part, built around only one playable character. It’s a darker, more violent story that, by the developers’ own admission, draws more from fantasy blockbusters in the West. And it’s seemingly trying to deliver the type of game a modern audience expects. While each entry in the series has tried something new, Final Fantasy XVI is arguably the biggest departure thus far.

After getting a hands-on with a preview demo—and talking to the creative business Unit III development team about the story, structure, and content of the game—the series diehard in me is starting to make out the vision being constructed here. Final Fantasy XVI is a bombastic, aggressive spectacle with prestige-level production values and a striking, self-serious vibe. But more than anything, the playable demo has me largely convinced that this new gameplay formula is actually the right move for the franchise.

[Disclaimer: Square Enix asked us to specify that this preview demo was a special version made for the media to experience and content may differ from the final version.]

Consumer-grade virtual reality was still in its infancy in 2016 when Sony decided it should be on the leading edge of the charge . The first PlayStation VR headset sold relatively well compared to its early PC VR competition and quite well compared to other console accessories. But over the last six years, Sony has largely let its first console VR experiment wither on the vine, allowing competitors to advance the state of the art with frequent hardware and software updates.

Now that we're firmly in the PS5 era, Sony is back to prove it hasn't completely forgotten about its virtual reality market. The PlayStation VR2 headset shows all the refinements you'd expect from years of technological advancement and throws in a few nice features that aren't standard among the competition, to boot. Despite those improvements, though, the PSVR2 still feels like a by-the-numbers, too-little-too-late attempt by Sony to keep its foot in a niche it might not be fully committed to.

    Ready, get set…

The PSVR2 does away with the ludicrous mess of wires, junction boxes, power plugs, and cameras that came to define the original PSVR . As we discussed in our unboxing impressions , the newer headset features a single USB-C cable that plugs directly into the front of a PS5. That means you're not left with a clutter of equipment by your entertainment center if you leave the headset plugged in, and it's not a major hassle to get connected if you want to put the PSVR2 back in the box between sessions.

Out of the box: Ars’ first impressions of the PSVR2 hardware

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 10 February, 2023 - 15:43 · 1 minute

This week, well over six years since we last opened a virtual reality headset from Sony , the PlayStation VR2 has arrived at the Ars Orbiting HQ. And while our full review of the hardware and software will have to wait until next week, we can give you some general first impressions of the out-of-the-box fit and finish right now.

Anyone who remembers the mess of wires and junction boxes included with the original PSVR headset will marvel at just how little is included in the PSVR2 box. There's the headset itself, of course—with its single USB-C connector permanently attached—alongside two specially made PSVR2 hand-tracking controllers (finally replacing the downright ancient PlayStation Move controllers that had been adapted for the original PSVR's hand-tracking). There's no more fiddling with a maze of connections or hooking up a separate camera to your console—the new hardware has a plug-and-play simplicity that was sorely lacking in 2017.

The box also includes a specially designed set of earbuds, which are set inside a solid band that clips onto the back of the PSVR2 head strap. The loose, wired earbuds hang off the sides of the device just far enough to fit into your ears and slot into a couple of head strap divots when not in use.

Sony: Would-be PlayStation 5 buyers “should have a much easier time” now

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Monday, 30 January, 2023 - 23:10

    The PlayStation 5.

In a blog post published on Monday, Sony hardware VP Isabelle Tomatis announced that there is now an "increased supply" of PlayStation 5 game consoles after more than two years of shortages. "If you’re looking to purchase a PS5 console, you should now have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally," she wrote.

This is the second time this month Sony has publicly said that it believes its PlayStation 5 supply woes have concluded—the first was during a press conference at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

In the blog post, Tomatis pinned the prior struggles on "unprecedented demand." That seems to be true, according to analysts who watch Sony and the video game industry—but there may have been other factors at play, such as pandemic-related supply constraints for some components.
