Burnley look set for drop after Callum Wilson leads Newcastle’s 4-1 thrashing

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 3 days ago - 16:03

Two years ago Newcastle defeated Burnley to send them down to the Championship and the Clarets’ 22nd loss of this season felt like having the same result this time around as the hosts capitulated.

Once Callum Wilson opened the scoring there was no way back for Vincent Kompany’s side who were completely outclassed, suffering at the feet of Newcastle’s wingers, Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon, who helped move the visitors up to sixth. Burnley are five points from safety with two games to play and only the greatest of optimists thinks they have a chance of extricating themselves.

Mikel Arteta sticks with the XI that won the first half of the north London derby, so Trossard starts and Martinelli is on the bench.

Morning everyone and welcome to the first Premier League game of the day. It’s not the Championship finale, obviously, but it’s still pretty appetising. Arsenal are top of the league, even if they are nobody’s favourites to win it. With 80 points in the bag, they already have two more than they needed to seal the title in 1997-98. They have scored the most goals in the Premier League and conceded the fewest. And yet they still have a wobble in them, as they showed in that week when they lost to both Villa and Bayern.

Elijah Adebayo strikes but frustrated Luton fail to put Everton away

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 4 days ago - 21:10

Every point counts, but this one is unlikely to be enough for Luton Town. When the story of the 2023-24 Premier League season comes to be told, it is likely that they will look back with regret when they remember the night when they failed to find a way past a negative, limited Everton side.

Of course, nobody inside Kenilworth Road could quibble with the level of Luton’s spirit and desire. There was also a lovely equalising goal from Elijah Adebayo, whose strike cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s early opener, and there were periods when Rob Edwards’s team looked capable of breaking Everton down. The pressure was relentless during the second half. Tahith Chong, who never stopped running, was outstanding.

Tom Lockyer has a chat. He looks very chirpy and relaxed, and says “I want to be a bit more involved now, if I can help the lads in any sort of way”. Also:

It’s a massive game, isn’t it? Let’s not shy away from it tonight. The gaffer’s just done his talk. He’d probably have taken this position at the start of the season, coming into it. I hope the fans think like that as well. Everton are safe now and we’re hoping they’re going to be on the beach. The only thing we can hope for is maybe it’ll mean more for us today – we’ll run faster, we’ll fight harder. But with a Sean Dyche team that’s a given for them.

Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson head Chelsea to win against Tottenham

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 5 days ago - 20:51

Ange Postecoglou says he does not care about the questions being asked about Tottenham’s inability to defend securely from set pieces. The manager believes he will get it right. But he could not avoid another hail of them as his team slumped to a third defeat on the spin, their season in increasing danger of fizzling out.

It was Chelsea’s night, this a victory to fire their hopes of a Europa League finish to a remorselessly testing season. They were excellent in the first half, Spurs so poor that Postecoglou howled in frustration on a number of occasions. It was difficult to remember seeing him so unhappy.

Masters outlines Premier League’s objections to ‘risk-averse’ regulator

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 5 days ago - 13:47

    • Premier League CEO makes most forceful intervention to date
    • Masters challenges plans for ‘complicated, duplicative system’

Richard Masters has laid out a series of detailed objections to plans for an independent regulator for English football, arguing the body will be too risk-averse and subject to too much influence by government.

This new series of challenges to the regulator is perhaps the Premier League’s most forceful piece of lobbying. With the football governance bill passing its way through parliament, Masters fleshed out the league’s longstanding criticism that the regulator would result in “unintended consequences”.
