Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro review: More than enough buttons, too much software

Specs at a glance: Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro
Switches Razer Green (clicky) or Yellow (linear)
    Keycaps Doubleshot ABS plastic
    Connectivity options USB-A cable
    Backlighting Per-key RGB
Size (with wrist rest) 18.3×9.35×1.73 inches
    (466×237.5×44 mm)
Weight (with wrist rest) 3.37 pounds  (1,530 g)
    Warranty 2 years
    Price (MSRP) $230
Other 1x USB-A passthrough port, detachable wrist rest

If you've ever wished your keyboard had more buttons, Razer's BlackWidow V4 Pro may be for you. It expands the full-size keyboard layout to include a column of macro keys and three non-mechanical buttons on the keyboard's left edge. The keyboard also has a volume roller and a so-called Command Dial, which lets you twist your inputs to control zoom, scroll through a long spreadsheet, or tweak the size of a Photoshop brush.

Despite Razer's gaming focus, the BlackWidow V4 Pro fits well in work settings thanks to its extreme, multi-layer programmability, a strong but imperfect typing experience, and a USB-A passthrough port. It's easy to dim the RGB lighting and get to work with complex key bindings; you can launch frequently used apps and sites with a keypress and navigate programs with the dial.

But many of the BlackWidow V4 Pro's best features require you to keep Razer's Synapse app open, and while this isn't a new complaint, the introduction of the multi-function dial puts a harsh spotlight on this limitation.

Razer’s $280 mouse is covered in gaping holes

There are a lot of cookie-cutter mice that, though made by different manufacturers, have the same shapes and features but rely on mild changes in color or sensor specs to differentiate themselves. So when Razer announced the Viper Mini Signature Edition (SE) today, a wireless mouse that looks like it forgot to get dressed, we took notice.

The Viper Mini SE uses a magnesium alloy chassis "exoskeleton," as Razer describes it. Lines of dark gray stretch across the mouse's palm area, creating a web-like design and bold, gaping holes. Razer's using an extreme take on the honeycomb design, which has holes drilled into a mouse's chassis to reduce weight. However, the typical honeycomb mouse, like the Glorious Model I , has many more holes that are smaller, while the Viper Mini SE has holes that are so big, it looks like you could poke your finger through them.

At first look, I was immediately concerned about the mouse's durability. Despite what Razer claims, I still think I'm more likely to break a mouse with 18 holes in it than one with none. Large openings can also attract dust and debris, but bigger holes should make the mouse easier to clean with an air blower than a honeycomb mouse topped with more, smaller openings.

Razer’s $400 soundbar has a creepy camera to help emit surround sound

Razer is using CES 2023 to expand its soundbar lineup with a top-tier model with its own subwoofer. Specs include a frequency response of 40-20,000 Hz and a max sound pressure level of 98 dB. But for those who prefer being extremely cautious with their gadgets when it comes to privacy and security, the Razer Leviathan V2 Pro 's integrated camera is disappointing to see.

But Razer insists that the infrared camera, which exists in the front center of the speaker, is all in the name of next-level virtual surround sound. Using head-tracking AI, the soundbar can tell where the user is and create a virtual soundscape with the listener as the center point. The beamforming technology comes from Audioscenic , which discussed the feature as research at CES 2017 and demoed it at CES 2022 . The tech allows the soundscape to change while it tracks you as you move.

That makes the soundbar a unique product, with Razer aiming to expand PC audio capabilities without filling home offices and gaming dens with physical speakers. The Leviathan V2 Pro uses THX Spatial Audio virtual 7.1 surround sound (Razer acquired THX in 2016) and, per Razer, focuses on "crisp, clear treble" and "deep, punchy bass" through three different audio modes, which you can toggle across through a button on top of the soundbar.
