BMW is the latest automaker to issue a recall for some of its electric vehicles. It has identified a problem with the battery-management software for the traction batteries in some i4 and i7 sedans , as well as some iX SUVs , that could result in a car temporarily losing power. Consequently, it wants to update the software in those cars' battery-electronic control units.

The problem was first brought to BMW's attention last June with a report from a Chinese BMW that experienced a drivetrain warning light in one of its EVs. This was traced to the high-voltage battery ECU, at which point BMW started investigating the problem. By late November it had identified 10 warranty cases in the US involving a temporary loss of power.

By this time BMW's engineers decided that the problem had the potential to occur in other vehicles, and in mid-December BMW decided to issue a recall.

On Friday, Rivian issued a recall for more than 12,000 electric vehicles due to potentially suspension components. The problem affects model year 2022 Rivian R1T trucks, R1S SUVs, and some Rivian EDV delivery vans—a total of 12,212 EVs in all.

In mid-August, Rivian discovered that an upper control arm had separated from the steering knuckle on one of its vehicles. The company began an investigation and by the end of September had identified six reports "potentially related to this issue that had accumulated" over the course of production.

According to Rivian's safety recall report , its production records can't confirm that the two suspension components have been properly torqued on every vehicle. That could throw out the wheel's alignment or potentially even separate the joint.

Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 20,000 of their newest electric vehicles. The problem affects the impressive Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 , a pair of EVs built using the Korean OEMs' new E-GMP platform.

Specifically, the issue is to do with the EVs' parking brake function. If a voltage fluctuation occurs while the vehicle is parked and turned off, a command signal from the shifter control unit could disengage the parking pawl, potentially allowing the car to roll away.

The issue was identified by the automakers in Korea; Hyundai says that it received four claims of Ioniq 5s being affected.

Shortages of infant and specialty formulas continue to worsen in the US, with the national out-of-stock rate hitting a high of 43 percent in the first week of May, according to data released this week from Datasembly , which tracks retail information.

With bare shelves in stores, purchase limits, and online price gouging and scams, parents across the country are struggling to feed formula-fed babies and children with medical conditions that necessitate specialized formulas. News reports are filled with parents driving hours to search stores for formula or posting pleas online . Some are even watering down formula or turning to recalled batches contaminated with dangerous bacteria.

The dire shortage is due to a combination of factors, including pandemic-related supply chain issues, product recalls, and inflation, according to Datasembly CEO Ben Reich.

Fire fears prompt urgent recall of popular car model

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / TheNewDaily · Friday, 5 February, 2021 - 03:57 · 2 minutes

Owners of Hyundai Tucsons up to six years old have been told to park the vehicles in an open space away from garages and flammable materials due to fears a manufacturing error could lead to the car’s engine catching fire, even when the vehicle is turned off.

A recall notice issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Thursday said the electronic circuit board in the Anti-Lock Braking System module may short circuit when the components are exposed to moisture.

It warned owners of Tucson models made from 2015 to 2021 to park affected vehicles in an open space away from flammable materials and structures, such as garages, and wait to be contacted.

To prevent power surge and eliminate the risk of fire, a relay kit will be installed on the circuit board free of charge by an authorised Hyundai dealership.

The ACCC said more than 93,572 vehicles were affected by the recall.

The recall notice states the risk of engine fire remained even when the vehicle was turned off, as the circuit is constantly powered.

“This could increase the risk of an accident, serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property,” the ACCC recall notice states.

However, the short circuit does not impact the functioning of the ABS.

Hyundai says its cars are still ‘safe to drive’

A spokesman for Hyundai Australia said the vehicles were still “safe to drive”.

“We have had no incidents of fire in Australia related to this Tucson issue,” he said.

“The recall is a precautionary and voluntary measure to ensure the safety of our customers – which is of the utmost importance to Hyundai.

“As an added precaution, Hyundai recommends parking these vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed.”

He said if customers had any questions about this voluntary recall, they should phone Hyundai Customer Care on 1800 186 306.

In relation to other Hyundai model vehicles, he indicated there were no defects identified at this stage.

“We have recalled the Hyundai vehicles where we have identified a safety-related defect,” he said.

“We are constantly evaluating data from a variety of sources and won’t hesitate to conduct or expand a recall when we determine one is necessary to protect the safety of our customers.”

Hyundai is not the first car manufacturer to face recalls, with other manufacturers having to issue recalls related to faulty airbags and other problems.

In 2020, Toyota, Mazda and Suzuki issued voluntary recalls of more than 18,000 vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 1999 fitted with potentially deadly Takata NADI 5-AT airbags.

And in April 2020 more than than 45,000 Toyota vehicles were recalled over concerns a defective fuel pump could increase the risk of crashes.
