The music industry’s over-reliance on TikTok shows how lazy it has become | Shaad D'Souza

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Friday, 1 March - 15:28

Universal’s decision to remove its artists from TikTok has destabilised both companies – and lays bare how record labels have become reliant on random virality

Earlier this month, the music industry was hit with its biggest shake-up in years when Universal Music Group announced that it would be pulling the entirety of its catalogue – which covers everyone from K-pop stars BTS to Taylor Swift and legacy acts such as Abba – from TikTok .

In an open letter, UMG said the decision was made in protest at the platform’s low compensation rates, lack of protections around AI deepfakes and low safety standards for TikTok users. Universal also alleged that TikTok tried to “intimidate” the label by “selectively removing the music of … our developing artists, while keeping on the platform our audience-driving global stars”. TikTok’s brief response decried UMG’s “false narrative and rhetoric”.

Tech bros need to realise deepfake porn ruins lives – and the law has to catch up

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Friday, 1 March - 09:18

Taylor Swift is just one of countless victims of deepfake videos. Firms feeding off this abuse should pay for the harm they cause

Imagine finding that someone has taken a picture of you from the internet and superimposed it on a sexually explicit image available online. Or that a video appears showing you having sex with someone you have never met.

Imagine worrying that your children, partner, parents or colleagues might see this and believe it is really you. And that your frantic attempts to take it off social media keep failing, and the fake “you” keeps reappearing and multiplying. Imagine realising that these images could remain online for ever and discovering that no laws exist to prosecute the people who created it.

Romcom ending: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s big night at the Super Bowl

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 12 February - 04:51

The pop star was a focal point during the NFL’s biggest night, getting to enjoy a happy ending with her victorious boyfriend

Taylor Swift, firmly in her WAG era, ended weeks of speculation over her Super Bowl attendance on Sunday night. She successfully managed to jet from a Tokyo arena show to Las Vegas to watch her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, play in the Super Bowl.

In typical Swift style, the appearance was a tightly choreographed affair that reportedly involved two private jets (one on standby, just in case) to ensure that she arrived in Sin City in time. When Swift hit Allegiant Stadium, the entourage included Blake Lively, Ice Spice and Kelce’s sister-in-law Kylie.
