What a lovely day: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer is so shiny and chrome

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 1 December - 17:05 · 1 minute

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a younger version of Fury Road 's fierce Imperator in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga .

Among the undisputed highlights of 2015's post-apocalyptic masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road was Charlize Theron's steely, vengeful Imperator Furiosa , a war captain who turned against the brutal ruler of the Wasteland to free his enslaved "wives." We now have our first look at the younger version of our beloved Imperator with the official trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga —a spinoff prequel film starring Anya Taylor-Joy that traces the origin of this iconic character. It's everything we could want in a Mad Max trailer, and we are so very ready to witness this movie when it hits theaters next spring.

(Spoilers for Mad Max: Fury Road below.)

We met Furiosa early on in Fury Road , working logistics for Immortan Joe (the late Hugh Keays-Byrne), who charged her with ferrying oil from Gas Town to his Citadel with the help of a small crew of War Boys and one of the war rigs—basically tractor trailer trucks souped up with armor and novel weaponry. Furiosa stole the war rig instead, taking Joe's five wives with her. She teamed up with Max to fight off Joe's army as they made their way to the Green Place, where Furiosa grew up. When they finally encountered the Vuvalini of Many Mothers, Furiosa learned that the Green Place was now an uninhabitable swamp. They ultimately returned to the Citadel and overthrew Immortan Joe, and our last image of her was a triumphant Furiosa on a lift rising into the citadel.

Here’s the full trailer for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Monday, 13 November, 2023 - 17:21 · 1 minute

Zack Snyder and Netflix hope to launch a new franchise with Rebel Moon Part 1: Child of Fire , with Part 2 to release next year.

Netflix concluded its Geeked Week showcase yesterday with the release of the full trailer for director Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon : A Child of Fire . It's the first of two parts (with plans for a third film to make it a trilogy), and Snyder and the streaming giant hope the films will launch a new space opera franchise. There are already plans for a novelization of the film, a four-issue prequel comic, a narrative podcast, an animated series, and a four-player game for the Netflix gaming platform.

As we reported previously , years ago, director Zack Snyder had an idea for an epic Star Wars movie that he pitched to Lucasfilm. That project never panned out for a variety of reasons. But the idea continued to germinate until Netflix got on board. Apart from Star Wars, Snyder has said his influences include the films of Akira Kurosawa, especially Seven Samurai , and The Dirty Dozen . He has set his epic saga in a universe controlled by the ruthless and corrupt government of the Mother World (the Imperium) with an army led by one Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee). The rebel moon of the title is called Veldt.

Netflix releases first teaser for live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 10 November, 2023 - 16:51

The Netflix live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender will hit Netflix on February 22, 2024.

Fresh off its critically acclaimed live-action adaptation of the hugely popular anime series One Piece , Netflix has released the first official teaser for yet another live-action adaptation: Avatar: The Last Airbender , based on the animated Nickelodeon TV series of the same name. As we've noted before , Netflix has a mixed track record for these anime adaptations, but if the teaser is any indication, The Last Airbender could join One Piece as another smashing success for the streaming platform.

(Some spoilers for the anime series below, but no major reveals.)

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original anime series was set in an Asian-inspired world where certain chosen individuals have the ability to telekinetically manipulate one of four elements (earth, air, water, and fire)—a practice known as "bending." Each generation, there is one Avatar who can bend all four elements and is thus responsible for maintaining harmony among the four elemental nations, as well as being a link between the physical and spirit worlds.

New York falls under a spectral “death chill” in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire teaser

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 8 November, 2023 - 22:02

The Spengler family returns to their New York City roots to battle an evil force in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire .

A mysterious evil force has put New York City into a deadly deep freeze in the first official teaser for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire , Jason Reitman's much-anticipated follow-up to his successful 2021 sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife . (Jason is the son of the late Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films in the franchise in the 1980s, so it's very much a family affair).

    (Spoilers for Ghostbusters: Afterlife below.)

Afterlife introduced us to a new generation of ghostbusters descended from Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis), namely, the science-loving Phoebe (McKenna Grace) and her mechanically inclined brother Trevor (Finn Wolfhard). Mom Callie (Carrie Coon), aka Egon's daughter, moved the family out to Oklahoma when she inherited Egon's old house. The kids discovered their grandfather's old ghost-busting gear just in time to battle the attempted return of none other than Gozer the Gozerian from the original 1984 film.

Final trailer for The Marvels recalls past Avengers as a new threat looms

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 7 November, 2023 - 14:23 · 1 minute

Brie Larson's Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel takes on a new Kree villain named Dar-Benn in The Marvels .

For whatever reason—superhero fatigue, disappointing performances by Marvel's last few films, the ongoing Hollywood strikes, or the general depressing state of the world— The Marvels doesn't seem to have generated the same kind of palpable anticipation that preceded the franchise's most successful releases. That's despite a fun, promising trailer back in July. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the movie opens this weekend, and the studio has dropped one last trailer with nods to past Avengers in their battle against Thanos, perhaps to remind us all why we fell in love with the MCU to begin with.

    (Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame below.)

As previously reported , Brie Larson and Iman Vellani reprise their respective roles as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel for the film, along with Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, daughter of Carol/Captain Marvel's BFF Maria. Monica grew up to become a SWORD agent, but thanks to the events of WandaVision , she can also absorb and manipulate energy as Spectrum. As for Khan , aka Ms. Marvel, she's a teenage Pakistani American who lives in Jersey City. She's a major comic books fan, worships Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and fantasized about becoming a superhero someday. Her powers stem from the Terrigen Mists, released globally in a crossover storyline, the " Inhumanity ." The mists activated dormant Inhuman cells in several people, Kamala included.

Kingpin is back with a snazzy eyepatch in trailer for darker, bloody Echo

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 3 November, 2023 - 19:59

Echo is the first Marvel project to feature a deaf protagonist and the first series to air all five episodes at once.

If, like us, you miss the darker, more adult-oriented Netflix Defenders series ( Jessica Jones , Daredevil , Luke Cage , Punisher ), you'll be intrigued by the official trailer for Echo , which seems to be channeling some of the same gritty energy. In fact, it's the first Marvel project to earn a TV-MA rating and the first to feature a deaf protagonist. In other firsts, Marvel will drop all five episodes at once on both Disney and Hulu.

    (Spoilers for Hawkeye below.)

We've already met Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka Echo, in Hawkeye . She was the deaf commander of the Tracksuit Mafia, capable of perfectly copying another person's movements. And she was on a quest to discover the true identity of Ronin, the assassin who had killed her father. That put her on a collision course with Clint Barton/Hawkeye, who had hung up his Ronin gear for good.

Ryan Gosling is a wise-cracking stuntman with a mission in The Fall Guy trailer

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Thursday, 2 November, 2023 - 21:18 · 1 minute

Ryan Gosling takes on a role made famous in the 1980s by Lee Majors in the forthcoming film reboot The Fall Guy .

Fresh off his scene-stealing turn as Ken in Greta Gerwig's smash summer hit Barbie , Ryan Gosling takes on a different kind of iconic role as a stunt man who must find a missing movie star in The Fall Guy . Directed by David Leitch, who also brought us the glorious John Wick (his uncredited directorial debut with Chad Stahelski ), the film is a loose adaptation of the popular 1980s TV series of the same name starring Lee Majors. Based on the trailer that just dropped, The Fall Guy is a welcome throwback to the classic action comedies, giving Gosling another chance to exhibit his leading-man acting chops.

Those of us of a certain age practically grew up with Majors, starting with his hit series, The Six Million Dollar Man (1973–1978). The Fall Guy debuted in 1981, in which Majors played stuntman Colt Seavers, who moonlighted as a bounty hunter with his cousin (and aspiring stuntman), Howie Munson (Douglas Barr). Heather Thomas played stuntwoman and love interest Jody Banks, and each episode featured the team engaged in action-packed adventures that conveniently made excellent use of Colt's extensive experience and knowledge of stunts. In keeping with the theme, the introductory montage paid tribute to classic stunt scenes from Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, Silver Streak, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid , and The Poseidon Adventure , among others.

Black Manta is out for revenge in trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Thursday, 14 September, 2023 - 16:46

Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson are essentially co-stars in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom .

Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , the oft-delayed sequel to 2018's Aquaman , which introduced the world to Jason Momoa as the exiled heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. This time around, we find Aquaman juggling domestic duties while battling an existential threat to Atlantis in the form of an old foe bent on exacting revenge.

    (Spoilers for 2018's Aquaman below.)

When it was first announced, Aquaman initially struck me as an odd choice for a superhero movie. After all, that was the role—deemed ripe for satire—that Entourage 's fictional actor Vincent Chase took on, with James Cameron supposedly directing for purposes of the plot. Then early images appeared with Jason Momoa in all his Aquaman glory, and many people changed their tune. The finished film wasn't a slam dunk with critics—I enjoyed it well enough but thought the plot was an unholy mess—but you sure couldn't argue with that box office return. Aquaman grossed a whopping $1.15 billion worldwide, the highest-grossing film in the DCEU.

Godzilla roars his way onto Apple TV+ in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters teaser

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 8 September, 2023 - 21:53 · 1 minute

Apple TV+'s new original series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters , picks up where 2014's Godzilla left off.

Major film franchises expanding into streaming television is officially a trend: Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Universe, and now Legendary Entertainment's MonsterVerse , which brought together Godzilla, King Kong, and various other monsters ( kaiju ) created by Toho Co., Ltd into the same fold. There have been four feature films thus far, with a fifth slated for a 2024 release, plus the animated series Skull Island , which debuted on Netflix earlier this year.  And now we've got the first teaser for Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters , which picks up where the 2014 film Godzilla left off.

Set 15 years after a nuclear disaster in Japan, the 2014 Godzilla reimagined the classic monster's origins and featured the titular beast battling giant winged parasitic creatures called MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) that feed off nuclear energy and waste (and also warheads). San Francisco suffered quite a bit of major property damage as a result. That film also introduced us to Project Monarch, a secret organization established in the 1950s to study Godzilla and other kaiju —after attempts to kill Godzilla with nuclear weapons failed.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will further explore the history and aftermath of those events. Per the official premise:
