The world must reject Russia’s nuclear posturing – but not ignore the danger | Christopher S Chivvis

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 6 days ago - 10:01 · 1 minute

The closer Nato hugs Ukraine, the more Putin is sure to brandish his nuclear arms, and the greater the risk he uses them

Frustrated by the precarious state of Ukraine’s war effort and the long delays in US aid, leaders in France and Britain have stepped up their promises to Ukraine in the last few days. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, repeated in an interview last week that he might send ground forces to shore up beleaguered Ukrainian defenses. Meanwhile, speaking in Kyiv, the British foreign minister, David Cameron, gave Ukraine the green light to strike into Russian territory, clearly signaling that the UK wants a more aggressive approach to the war.

Their frustration is understandable, as is the temptation to get more directly involved in the war, with more powerful weapons and more guarantees of long-term backing for Ukraine. Perhaps with enough time and a lot more effort, and if Washington can maintain its focus amid all the crises bearing down on it, Ukraine could eventually regain its footing on the battlefield. It might then be able to start taking back some of the territory it has lost to Russia – perhaps in 2025, or maybe the year after that.

Christopher S Chivvis is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace where he directs the program on American Statecraft. He served as the US national intelligence officer for Europe from 2018-2021

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · 7 days ago - 19:21

Two Ukrainian colonels allegedly recruited by FSB to kill president as inauguration ‘gift’ for Vladimir Putin

Ukraine says it has foiled a Russian plot to assassinate its president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and other senior officials, using a network of agents who were recruited by Vladimir Putin’s domestic spy agency.

The SBU state security service in Kyiv said the alleged agents had been instructed to find someone close to the presidential guard . The person would take Zelenskiy prisoner – in his office or when he left the building – and then kill him, the SBU said.

US spokesperson says no envoy will attend because Russian president’s election was not ‘free and fair’. What we know on day 804

The US and most EU nations will boycott a Kremlin ceremony to swear in Vladimir Putin for a new six-year term as president on Tuesday, but France and some other EU states were expected to send an envoy despite a plea by Kyiv. “No, we will not have a representative at his inauguration,” Matthew Miller, a US state department spokesperson, said. “We certainly did not consider that election free and fair but he is the president of Russia and he is going to continue in that capacity.”

Russia threatened to strike British military facilities and ordered its military to hold battlefield nuclear weapons drills in a move the Kremlin described as a response to comments from the French president, Emmanuel Macron , and from the British foreign secretary, David Cameron . Macron has said he would “not rule out” the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine and Cameron said it was up to Kyiv how it used British weapons, including against targets inside of Russia.

French president Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen pressed Chinese leader Xi Jinping at a summit in Paris on Monday to use Beijing’s influence to halt the Russian war against Ukraine . Europe is concerned that while officially neutral over the Ukraine conflict, China is essentially backing Russia, which is using Chinese machine tools in arms production. “More effort is needed to curtail delivery of dual use goods to Russia that find their way to the battlefield,” von der Leyen said after talks, adding that “this does affect EU-China relations”.

Russian forces have taken control of the settlements of Soloviove in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region and Kotliarivka farther north in the Kharkiv region, the defence ministry said on Monday . Ukraine’s military made no mention of either locality in its evening General Staff report.

The Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who finished fourth in the 85kg light-heavyweight category at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, has been killed defending his country . The news was confirmed by the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, who said Pielieshenko died during combat operations on Sunday. He had joined up in the first few days of the Russian invasion in 2022.

A Russian journalist who has worked for both state-funded and independent media was detained Monday and faces charges of justifying terrorism through posts on the Telegram messaging app, her lawyer said . Nadezhda Kevorkova is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, her lawyer Kaloy Akhilgov said on Telegram. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. Akhilgov said the charges involve two posts, one in 2018 and the other in 2021.

An American soldier was detained in Russia last week on charges of “criminal misconduct,” the US army said Monday . The soldier – whose name was not released – adds to the number of Americans held in Russia at a time of deep tensions with Washington over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Vladimir Kara-Murza, who has written columns as a contributor for The Washington Post from his prison cell in Russia, won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary . The Russian politician, author and historian has been imprisoned in Russia since April 2022. He was convicted of treason last year for denouncing the war in Ukraine.

Poland’s government said Monday it was financing the operation of 20,000 Starlink internet devices in Ukraine – an essential network for the country’s military communications as it fights off Russia’s invasion . Starlink, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is a network of satellites in low Earth orbit that can provide internet to remote locations, or areas that have had normal communications infrastructure disabled.

Russia-Ukraine war live: Putin orders nuclear weapons test

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 6 May - 08:24 · 1 minute

Russia has said it would hold a military exercise that will include practice for the use of tactical nuclear weapons

Russia has said it would hold a military exercise that will include practice for the use of tactical nuclear weapons , Reuters reports. It comes after what the defence ministry said were provocative threats from western officials.

The defence ministry said the exercise was ordered by President Vladimir Putin and would test the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to perform combat missions.

A Russian overnight drone attack cut power to over 400,000 consumers in Ukraine’s northeast region of Sumy on Monday, Ukraine‘s energy ministry said in a statement via the Telegram messaging app.

A Ukrainian drone attack hit vehicles carrying workers in Russia’s frontier Belgorod region , killing six people and injuring 35, the governor said Monday. Belgorod has come under an increasing number of fatal Ukrainian attacks in recent months and Monday’s bombardment is the deadliest in weeks.

Ukraine will be one of the main items on the agenda as China’s premier, Xi Jinping , visits France. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, and European commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, are expected to urge him to use his influence with Russia.

Italy’s defence minister said on Monday economic sanctions against Russia had failed and called on the West to try harder to negotiate a diplomatic solution with Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Guido Crosetto told daily Il Messaggero that the West had wrongly believed its sanctions could stop Russia’s aggression, but it had overestimated its economic influence in the world. “Instead ... the only way to resolve this crisis is to involve everyone, first (to obtain) a truce and then peace,” Crosetto said.
