Love blooms in the midst of war in latest trailer for Dune: Part Two

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 12 December - 22:19 · 1 minute

Dune: Part Two is the next chapter in director Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novel.

We didn't get to see Dune: Part Two —the second film in director Denis Villeneuve's stunning adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic—last month as originally planned since the film's November release was delayed until next March due to the Hollywood strikes. But Warner Bros. doesn't want us to completely forget about Dune in the meantime, so it dropped another trailer for the holiday season.

(Spoilers for Dune: Part One below.)

As reported previously (also here and here ), Herbert's novel Dune is set in the distant future and follows the fortunes of various noble houses in what amounts to a feudal interstellar society. Much of the action takes place on the planet Arrakis, where the economy is driven largely by a rare, life-extending drug called melange ("the spice"). Melange also conveys a kind of prescience and makes faster-than-light travel practical. There's betrayal, a prophecy concerning a messianic figure, giant sandworms, and battle upon battle as protagonist Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) contends with rival House Harkonnen and strives to defeat the forces of Shaddam IV, Emperor of the Known Universe.

If you purchased any Discovery shows from the PlayStation Store, Sony has some bad news for you to discover.

The company recently announced that all Discovery content purchased on the PlayStation Store will be erased before 2024. The brief notice , signed by the PlayStation Store, says:

As of 31 December 2023, due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library.

We sincerely thank you for your continued support.

PlayStation Network started selling TV shows and movies with 2008's PlayStation 3, and at the time you were allowed to transfer content to different Sony devices, Kotaku noted. That feature went away with the PlayStation 4. With the growth of streaming TV apps , many of which could be accessed through a PlayStation, the PlayStation Store stopped selling movies and TV shows in 2021.

Two Titans team up to defeat a new foe in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire trailer

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Monday, 4 December - 17:10 · 1 minute

Warner Bros. debuted the official trailer for the latest film in its Monsterverse saga: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire .

Legendary Entertainment's MonsterVerse brought Godzilla, King Kong, and various other monsters ( kaiju ) created by Toho Co., Ltd into the same fold. There have been four feature films, plus the animated series Skull Island , which debuted on Netflix earlier this year, and Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters , which debuted last month and picked up where the 2014 film Godzilla left off. (The season finale will air on January 12, 2024.) And now we have the official trailer for the next film installment— Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire —unveiled during CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, over the weekend.

(Spoilers for Godzilla vs. Kong below.)

Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong picks up sometime after its 2021 predecessor. Godzilla vs. Kong showcased not only a major showdown between its titular titans—in which Godzilla emerged the victor—but also the two teaming up in the climactic finale to take out Mechagodzilla, a telepathically controlled creature with the severed head of Ghidorah. Ghidorah's consciousness took over when Mechagodzilla was activated, and it took both Kong and Godzilla (plus some timely help from humans) to defeat him. (Kong got the final honors, although Godzilla charged the killing ax—made from one of his dorsal plates—with his atomic breath.)

What a lovely day: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer is so shiny and chrome

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Friday, 1 December - 17:05 · 1 minute

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a younger version of Fury Road 's fierce Imperator in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga .

Among the undisputed highlights of 2015's post-apocalyptic masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road was Charlize Theron's steely, vengeful Imperator Furiosa , a war captain who turned against the brutal ruler of the Wasteland to free his enslaved "wives." We now have our first look at the younger version of our beloved Imperator with the official trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga —a spinoff prequel film starring Anya Taylor-Joy that traces the origin of this iconic character. It's everything we could want in a Mad Max trailer, and we are so very ready to witness this movie when it hits theaters next spring.

(Spoilers for Mad Max: Fury Road below.)

We met Furiosa early on in Fury Road , working logistics for Immortan Joe (the late Hugh Keays-Byrne), who charged her with ferrying oil from Gas Town to his Citadel with the help of a small crew of War Boys and one of the war rigs—basically tractor trailer trucks souped up with armor and novel weaponry. Furiosa stole the war rig instead, taking Joe's five wives with her. She teamed up with Max to fight off Joe's army as they made their way to the Green Place, where Furiosa grew up. When they finally encountered the Vuvalini of Many Mothers, Furiosa learned that the Green Place was now an uninhabitable swamp. They ultimately returned to the Citadel and overthrew Immortan Joe, and our last image of her was a triumphant Furiosa on a lift rising into the citadel.

Enhance your calm: Demolition Man turns 30

Thirty years ago today, Demolition Man first hit theaters, pitting Sylvester Stallone against Wesley Snipes in a crime-free but killjoy future where even minor vices have been declared illegal. The passage of time hasn't quite elevated this sci-fi action comedy to the legendary status of Die Hard or Lethal Weapon , but it's still an under-appreciated gem of '90s action movies, precisely because it unapologetically leans into the massive explosions and campy humor with wild abandon.

(Spoilers below, because it's been 30 years.)

Demolition Man started out as a spec script by Peter Lenkov, then a recent college grad eager to break into Hollywood. (Lenkov went on to create his own shared fictional TV universe with the interconnected reboot series Hawaii 5-0, MacGuyver , and Magnum P.I. ) Lenkov was a Lethal Weapon fan and envisioned an action movie about a cryogenically frozen "super cop" who wakes up decades in the future in a world largely free of crime, where he must battle his criminal arch-nemesis. As for the title, Lenkov had been listening to Sting's " Demolition Man " constantly because the cassette player in his car was broken. Inspiration strikes in nonlinear ways.

Black Manta is out for revenge in trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Thursday, 14 September, 2023 - 16:46

Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson are essentially co-stars in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom .

Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , the oft-delayed sequel to 2018's Aquaman , which introduced the world to Jason Momoa as the exiled heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. This time around, we find Aquaman juggling domestic duties while battling an existential threat to Atlantis in the form of an old foe bent on exacting revenge.

    (Spoilers for 2018's Aquaman below.)

When it was first announced, Aquaman initially struck me as an odd choice for a superhero movie. After all, that was the role—deemed ripe for satire—that Entourage 's fictional actor Vincent Chase took on, with James Cameron supposedly directing for purposes of the plot. Then early images appeared with Jason Momoa in all his Aquaman glory, and many people changed their tune. The finished film wasn't a slam dunk with critics—I enjoyed it well enough but thought the plot was an unholy mess—but you sure couldn't argue with that box office return. Aquaman grossed a whopping $1.15 billion worldwide, the highest-grossing film in the DCEU.
