What Is The Difference: Viruses, Worms, Ransomware, Trojans, Malware, Spyware, Rootkit

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Monday, 15 March, 2021 - 09:48 · 8 minutes

    types of malware

If you are among the people who consider malware, worms, and viruses to be the same thing, then you’re on the wrong track. Malware is an umbrella term for malicious software which includes all sorts of harmful elements like viruses, trojans, ransomware, bots, spyware, etc. So, let’s tell you about them in detail.

Have you ever tried to understand the difference between virus, trojan, worm, spyware, and malware? Even though they are meant to harm your device, steal your data, and spy on you, why are they named so differently? Basically, terms like viruses, trojans are all types of malicious software, or simply, malware.

Now, the first and foremost question arises, from where did the malware come? Who created the first virus?

Clearly, they are not some outer planet species, trying to harm us. In fact, the real truth is that they were not even created with an intention to harm someone.

The mention of malware goes back to 1949 when John von Neumann first developed the theoretical base for self-duplicating automation programs, but the technical implementation was not feasible at that time. The term “Computer Virus” was first used by Professor Leonard M. Adleman in 1981 in a conversation with Fred Cohen.

World’s first computer virus named ‘Brain’ was coded by two brothers, Basit Farooq Alvi and Amjad Farooq Alvi , who were from Lahore, Pakistan. Brain was meant to infect storage media based on MS-DOS FAT file systems. It was originally designed to infect the IBM PC; it replaced the boot sector of its floppy disk with the virus. The virus program changed the disk label to ©Brain and the defected boot sectors displayed this message:

Welcome to the Dungeon (c) 1986 Basit & Amjads (pvt) Ltd VIRUS_SHOE RECORD V9.0 Dedicated to the dynamic memories of millions of viruses who are no longer with us today – Thank GOODNESS!! BEWARE OF THE er..VIRUS: this program is catching program follows after these messages….$#@%$@!!

However, as you may presume, there was no evil intention behind this. Alvi brothers once justified Brain in their interview with TIME magazine; they created the virus only to protect their medical software from piracy. It was their countermeasure against copyright infringement acts.

Coming back to Malware, this is a malicious software designed to harm a computer that may or may not be connected to a network. Malware only gets into action when there is computer hardware involved in the game. Otherwise, the term Malware is of no use.

What are the types of Malware?

    What is a Worm?

Worms are malware computer programs which have the ability to replicate themselves. Their sole objective is to increase their population and transfer themselves to another computer via the internet or through storage media. They operate like spies involved in a top-secret mission, hiding their movement from the user.

Worms don’t cause any harm to the computer; their replicating nature consumes hard drive space, thus, slowing down the machine. A couple of the infamous worms are SQL Blaster which slowed the internet for a small period and Code Red which took down almost 359,000 websites.

    What is a Virus?

Viruses also have the ability to replicate themselves, but they do damage files on the computer they attack. Their main weakness lies in the fact that viruses can get into action only if they have the support of a host program. Otherwise, they’re just like a defeated warrior. They stick themselves to songs, videos, and executable files and travel all over the internet. W32.Sfc!mod, ABAP.Rivpas.A, Accept.3773 are some of the examples of virus programs.

The Virus Gang (Types of Computer Virus):

    • File Viruses
    • Macro Viruses
    • Master Boot Record Viruses
    • Boot sector Viruses
    • Multi-Partite Viruses
    • Polymorphic Viruses
    • Stealth Viruses

Feel free to Google any one of them if you like.

    What is a Trojan?

Trojans are not like viruses or worms, and they are not meant to damage or delete files on your system. Their principal task is to provide to a backdoor gateway for malicious programs or malevolent users to enter your system and steal your valuable data without your knowledge and permission. JS.Debeski.Trojan is an example of Trojan.

Trojans derive their name from the ‘Trojan Horse’ tale in which the Greeks entered the city of Troy with the help of a wooden horse disguised as a gift. But the Trojan turned out to be a sweet poison, as depicted in the movie Troy.

The Trojan Gang (Types of Trojan):

    • Remote Access Trojans
    • Data Sending Trojans
    • Destructive Trojans
    • Proxy Trojans
    • FTP Trojans
    • Security Software Disabler Trojans
    • Denial-Of-Service Attack Trojans

Feel free to Google anyone of them if you like.

    What is an Adware?

Adware are used to display advertisements on your computer’s desktop or inside individual programs. They generally come attached with free-to-use software. They are the primary source of revenue for the developers of those software programs.

Adware can’t be entirely described as Malware as they have no intention to harm your machine, they only track what advertisements you’re more interested in viewing and display the relevant ads on your computer screen. For some people, this can be alarming as it’s a breach of their privacy. Also, an attacker can stuff malicious code inside an adware program and use it to monitor users’ machine and even compromise it.

    What is Rootkit?

Rootkits are a very dangerous category of malware as they are created with an aim to get remote access to a computer with full administrative privileges. Generally, a rootkit is a collection of different programs that work in a coordinated fashion to gain access and conceal its existence. They are also difficult to stop as they employ additional obfuscation mechanisms to hide their presence on the computer.

    What is a Spyware?

Spyware programs also come attached with freeware. They track your browsing habits and other personal details and send it to a remote user. They can also facilitate installation of unwanted software from the internet. Unlike Adware, they work as a standalone program and do their operations silently.

    What is a Spam?

You get very irritated when you receive unwanted emails from unknown senders; these are called Spams or junk emails. And the process of flooding the internet with the same message is called Spamming, done for the purpose of commercial advertising. These junk emails may sometimes contain Viruses or Trojans that enter your system as soon as you open the mail.

    What is a Bot?

Bots or robots are automated processes that are designed to interact over the internet without the need of human interaction. They can be used for good and bad intentions. An evil-minded person can create a malicious Bot that is capable of infecting the host on its own. After transmitting itself to the host device, a Bot creates a connection with central servers which act as the command centers for the all infected hosts attached to that network called Botnet.

A bot’s skills include stealing passwords, logging keystrokes, analyzing network traffic, relay spam, launching DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, and opening backdoors on infected hosts.

Bots can be seen as the advanced form of Worms. Their infection rate and the tactic is more effective than that of Worms. These malicious Bots are created after a lot of hard work done by their malignant creators.

    What is a Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that can alter the normal operation of your machine. It encrypts the data and prevents you from using your computer partially or wholly. Ransomware programs also display warning messages asking for money to get your device back to normal working condition.

    What is a Keylogger?

As its name suggests, keylogger software is used to record the keystroke actions of a computer user. While it may be used for ethical purposes of measuring user behavior and engagement, the term is generally used for software that aims to record such actions without the knowledge of users. With a help of a keylogger, a notorious actor can know your email details, password, credit card details, messages you type, etc.

    Why people create malware?

After reading all this, you might be thinking why people create malware. Here are some reasons which might compel a coder to write malware programs:

    • Take control of a person’s computer for personal or professional reasons.
    • To get financial benefits. This also includes hackers raising money for a cause. Last year, we heard about a ransomware attack where hackers were collecting money to feed people. But it doesn’t mean what they were doing was right.
    • To steal confidential data.
    • To prove their point. For instance, by performing a security breach on a vulnerable system.
    • To take down an individual computer or a complete network.

    and the list goes on….

How can you protect your computer from malware?

    • Keep your system up to date.
    • Use genuine software.
    • Install an antivirus software and update it regularly.
    • Set-up a firewall, may it be custom as provided by antivirus software. Windows has an inbuilt firewall option in case you don’t want to use a custom firewall.
    • Never open unknown emails that generally reside in your Spam folder.
    • Never open unknown links, use online website safety checker tools if you’re not sure to open a website.

By taking these simple measures, you can effectively keep your machine free from Malware and other potential threats.

Why Do Windows Drive Letters Start With ‘C’? Why Not A Or B?

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Friday, 12 March, 2021 - 05:53 · 3 minutes

windows drive letter c drive why

The various logical drives in Windows are assigned a drive letter. Generally, the drive letter for the first logical drive is C followed by D, E, F. Well, A and B are also alphabets. These drive letters are kept in reserve for some special purpose, which is floppy drives.

If that answer doesn’t satisfy you, let’s dive deep and know what all this is about —

In the case of Windows and many other operating systems, a physical hard drive–used to install OS files and store data–is divided into partitions. In Windows, these partitions can be formatted using file systems like NTFS, FAT32, etc. These partitions are then known as logical drives and they are assigned a drive letter.

As far as my tech knowledge is concerned, it started to sprout in the mid-2000s. My first computer came with Windows and, obviously, or as some sort of a tradition, the first drive letter was C. In the beginning, I was told not to put any stuff in the C drive. Later, when a repair guy fixed my desktop, he installed Windows to the D drive. It seemed a bit unusual and it was a dilemma for me, whether I should keep my data on the C drive or not.

Even though I was a little bit uncomfortable with the changed drive letter, I actually never thought why the first drive letter was C, why not an A or a B, or a Z. It was years later, in fact, recently, when I asked the question to Google–Why is C the first Windows drive?

Also Read: How to Hide Any Drive in Windows Using Command Prompt?

It was not the case that the people who assigned the drive letters didn’t know that A and B also existed as an alphabet. It was done to prefer an old technology with is nowhere to be seen now, the floppy disk.

The drive letters are assigned according to a preference scheme for different kinds of media attached to the computer. These letter date back to the time when IBM ruled the PC market. Then, PCs didn’t have a hard drive, sounds strange? But you might be aware of the fact that the floppy drives were used as primary storage in earlier computers. So, they were given a special preference while assigning the drive letters.

IBM’s VM family member CP/CMS took the help of drive letters to identify minidisks attached to a user session. The file reference (pathname) comprised of the drive letter, file name, and file letter. For example, A:MYFILE.TXT. The drive letter system was later visible in other operating systems including Microsoft’s MS-DOS and later in Windows.

Why is the first drive C?

Earlier, computers had two floppy drives for running programs and storing data. The hardware had support for two floppies. Thus, the preference for them was built into the OS itself. The hard drives came at a later stage and were assigned the letter C. Initially, the physical drives were assigned letters. As they got bigger in size, the logical volumes came up which are now assigned the drive letter. Starting from C, it makes room for floppy drives to be added at a later stage.

    It’s irrelevant today

This thing doesn’t have a practical application anymore. But if you connect a floppy drive, it’ll be assigned the letter A and B for the next one. If you don’t have a floppy drive connected to your machine, you use the reserved letters A and B.

Is PUBG: New State Coming to India? Everything Else You Need To Know

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Monday, 8 March, 2021 - 12:15 · 2 minutes

Is The New PUBG New State Coming To India

The newest addition to the PUBG franchise, PUBG: New State , is ready for its launch and available for pre-order on Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Set in the year 2051, Krafton’s newest title plans to take on Activision’s COD Mobile.

The original PUBG creator, Krafton, a South Korean Video game holding company, is behind the development of PUBG: New State. Even though fans are eagerly waiting for New State’s release, the game is not yet available for pre-registrations in three countries: India, China, and Vietnam. Until that happens, let’s dive in to see how it could turn out.

Will PUBG: New State Release In India?

A recent leak hints that PUBG: New State is coming to India. A PUBG leakster by the name of Gemwire.gg posted a picture on Instagram.

If the leaks are to be believed, there are hidden files on New State’s website. These hidden files contain support for the Hindi Language, suggesting Krafton might release the new futuristic PUBG in India after all.

    The PUBG Mobile Ban Fiasco

In September last year, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) banned PUBG: Mobile under the IT Act alongside 118 other apps. The reason behind the PUBG Mobile ban was unapproved data accumulation of Indian users on servers located outside of India.

After the ban, Krafton revoked Tencent’s (Chinese conglomerate) publishing rights for PUBG India. Now, Krafton is preparing to relaunch the beloved PUBG mobile in India. If launched, PUBG Mobile can come with a few tweaks to suit the Indian community better.

Indian PUBG fanatics are eagerly waiting for the game’s re-release. However, the Indian Ministry has a different stand regarding PUBG mobile’s ban. One of the Indian ministers, Mr. Prakash Javadekar, commented, “PUBG is an example of a violent and aggressive game.”

Despite such a comment, the fact remains unchanged that there are many examples of aggressive video games widely available in India. For instance, the PUBG PC and console versions are still available in India, in contrast to the government’s stand on violent games.

PUBG: Mobile Or PUBG: New State: What’s Coming First?

As per Krafton, “ It is true that India has been excluded from the pre-registration of PUBG: New State. We are not planning to launch New State in India yet. We want to first focus on the re-release of the Indian version of PUBG mobile .”

From this statement, it is evident that Krafton is eager to get back into the Indian gaming community by re-launching its original PUBG Mobile game before launching PUBG: New State.

As discussed earlier, PUBG PC and console versions are still running in India. It is perceptible that PUBG: New State will make its way to the Indian market sooner or later.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out, as this is becoming a case of which PUBG game will be released first in India.

What Is An Electric Car Motor And How Does It Work?

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Saturday, 6 March, 2021 - 11:46 · 2 minutes

    Electric Car Motor: working, types

After a battery in an EV, the most important component is the motor. You can think of the electric car battery as the power source or fuel tank and the motor as the part that actually generates the power.

In simple words, motors in electric cars can be seen as engines in conventional cars. It produces power and transmits it to the wheels of the car.

Motors are rated in kW and batteries in kWh and both these components play an important role in configuring the total power output of the car.

Types Of Electric Motors Used In Electric Vehicles

types of electric vehicles motors Image: Arrow Electronics

Nowadays, different types of electric motors are used in electric cars. Here they are:

    • AC Induction Motor
    • Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)
    • Brushless DC Motor

However, AC induction motors and PMSM are the most widely used motors in modern electric cars. A three-phase AC induction motor is used in Tesla electric cars. Let’s understand it better with the help of working of AC induction motors.

Note: The induction motor, along with the RMF (Rotating Magnetic Field) was invented by the great scientist Nikola Tesla in 1887.

A Brief Overview Of An Electric Car Motor And Its Working

Electric vehicles motor working AC induction motor Image: The Drive

One of the most commonly used motors in electric cars is the AC induction motor.

The electric motor has two parts: a stator and a rotor. The stator is the stationary part that generates the Rotating Magnetic Field or RMF. Meanwhile, the rotor is the moving part that spins under the effect of RMF.

When the Alternating Current or AC passes through the stator, it creates an RMF, which causes the rotor to spin. The rotor is connected to a transmission that transmits power and turns the wheels. This way the car propels and moves forward.

Electric Cars Based On The No. Of Electric Motors

electric car motor Image: Mitsubishi Motors

Electric vehicles can be configured on the basis of the number of motors used in them.

Similar to conventional cars, electric cars can be FWD, RWD, and AWD.

    • FWD (Front-Wheel Drive): FWD electric cars have a single motor and it’s located between the front wheels.
    • RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive): RWD electric cars also have a single motor, however, it’s placed between the rear wheels.
    • AWD (All-Wheel Drive): AWD electric cars are usually equipped with two motors, each for both front and rear pairs of wheels. Nevertheless, some electric vehicles also have tri or quad motor setups. For example, Tesla Model S Plaid and GMC Hummer EV have a tri-motor configuration whereas Rivian R1T will have up to four electric motors.

Well, we guess, this is all you need to know about electric motors, their types, and working. If you would like to read something more about electric motors, then, feel free to drop your views in the comments section below.

Twitter Spaces Vs Clubhouse: A Solid Clubhouse Alternative?

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Friday, 5 March, 2021 - 09:33 · 4 minutes

    Twitter Spaces Vs Clubhouse comparison

Twitter Spaces vs Clubhouse or Twitter Spaces as a Clubhouse alternative is a welcome addition to the social-audio scene. However, Spaces has an edge over Clubhouse, since it is available for both iOS and Android. While Clubhouse is still struggling with the iOS user-base, Twitter Spaces seems to be making leaps here.

The features, interface, and working of both apps are pretty similar. You can learn all about Twitter Spaces here . Addressing the elephant in the room, here are the 5 reasons why Twitter Spaces Is Clubhouse alternative.

Twitter Spaces Vs Clubhouse: Why Spaces Is Better

    Twitter Spaces Android Presence

This is the first of many reasons why Twitter Spaces is a Clubhouse alternative on Android. On one hand, Spaces is in a trial phase where anyone can join a space using the Twitter app. On the other hand, Clubhouse has no Android app at the time of writing this piece.

Naturally, Twitter Spaces has the edge here as the platform has managed to tap into the vast Android market way before Clubhouse.

    It Has More Users!

Twitter Spaces is a solid Clubhouse rival because of the sheer number of users. If you have a Twitter account and the Twitter app on your phone, you’re ready to join Twitter Spaces. For now, most people can only join as listeners, but it is far more inclusive than Clubhouse. Users on Twitter Spaces can also opt in to just record a voice tweet and leave them for the others to see.

    Twitter Spaces Is More Inclusive

Clubhouse vs Twitter Spaces- Clubhouse alternatives

Compared to the invite-only-iOS-exclusive Clubhouse, Twitter Spaces is more inclusive. It isn’t only present on both Android and iOS, you don’t need any invites to join in. You can just follow Twitter Spaces on Twitter, and you’re set.

Another reason why Twitter Spaces is a cool Clubhouse alternative is that you don’t need a dedicated app for it. Spaces is a new Twitter feature on the existing Twitter app so you can join a Space, keep listening, minimize it and go about scrolling through your feed.

    Spaces Has Emojis

While it’s not a dealbreaker for Clubhouse fans, but it is always good to be able to express without speaking out. For anyone listening in and not wanting or able to give verbal feedback, Twitter Spaces has you covered. You can share emojis in a Twitter space.

Emojis are also a welcome touch because they make the screen slightly more vibrant. When you’re listening in on an Instagram Live, seeing the comments and emojis flying-by often adds some warmth to the conversation.

Twitter Spaces Vs Clubhouse On Privacy

Yet another space where Spaces beats Clubhouse. You have the choice to link or not link your contacts to Twitter, and you can use Spaces anyway. Clubhouse demands you to link all contacts just to share two invites.

Having added contacts, people are also being notified of certain unpleasant acquaintances when they join Clubhouse. While it’s not that big a deal in most cases, Clubhouse could’ve kept the contact-linking entirely optional.

What Makes Clubhouse Better Than Twitter Spaces?

No app is flawless, so there are also points where Clubhouse is ahead of the curve. If we see it as Twitter Spaces vs Clubhouse, Twitter Spaces is a Clubhouse alternative, but here’s where Clubhouse stands out.

Anyone Can Start A Room In Clubhouse

While Twitter lets everyone listen in on the conversation, Clubhouse lets everyone start a room of their own. If you’re on Twitter, you can probably just listen to other people on Twitter Spaces. If you’re on Clubhouse, you can start your own room or even a club in a few simple steps.

    Real People Real Names

a Screenshot from the Clubhouse app preview- About Clubhouse app

As I said, no apps are flawless but Clubhouse has the upper hand when it comes to real names of users. While Twitter is riddled with fake names and an assortment of bullies, a majority of people on Clubhouse are using real names because the app doesn’t let you change your name easily.

While it is an inconvenience too, it makes the interaction a lot more human if you can see the real names and profile pictures. There are fake accounts on Clubhouse too, but they’re way less compared to Twitter’s numbers.

    Rounding Up

While Twitter Spaces is a Clubhouse alternative on Android, Clubhouse is purpose-built for audio-rooms. Both apps have similar features and interfaces but with different goals. Twitter has added Spaces as a new feature, while Clubhouse is a standalone app. Based on our use, we can say they’re both neck to neck, and users will have a tough choice going with one of them.

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Thursday, 4 March, 2021 - 12:38 · 1 minute

    Microsoft mesh mixed reality tech

If you have been dreaming about hanging out with your friends abroad but without taking the pain of traveling, Microsoft Mesh might be the answer to it. The company unveiled its new holographic tech at the Insight 2021 conference.

So, let’s explore what Microsoft Mesh has to offer to the users.

What is Microsoft Mesh? What does it do?

Microsoft Mesh is a new mixed reality tech developed by Microsoft on the Azure platform. It can be used to bring together people from different locations in a single space and make them feel as if they’re sitting in the same room. It’s in a direction towards what we see in the Marvel movies .

Speaking of possible use cases, Microsoft Mesh can be used to conduct a virtual team meeting or multiple people can work on the same product design which will be recreated as a hologram with every minute detail.

Initially, Microsoft Mesh will recreate the animated avatars of people in the mixed reality space. But the future plans include teleporting a photorealistic virtual version of a person complete with gestures and facial expressions.

What more we could expect is people attending music concerts and exhibitions virtually at the comfort of their homes using the tech. We can also have doctors assisting virtually from remote locations.

What devices can run Microsoft Mesh?

Mesh is currently available on Hololens 2 devices. But Microsoft has opened up the platform so developers can create Mesh-enabled apps and experiences for other headsets, smartphones, PCs, and tablets.

    Are there any Mesh apps?

As of now, the company has released the Microsoft Mesh for Hololens preview app and the Mesh-enabled AltspaceVR app that can be used to hold meetings. But future plans include integrating Mesh into other products like Microsoft Teams and Dynamics 365.

Is anyone else making similar attempts?

While Microsoft has been working on Mesh for the last few years, the concept isn’t entirely new. In the past, we have seen such virtual teleportation attempts from companies. For example, Facebook’s Oculus Party lets people chat together but in VR.

So, this was some information about the new Microsoft Mesh tech. If you have something to add, then drop your thoughts in the comments.

Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Electric Car Batteries

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Saturday, 27 February, 2021 - 09:28 · 4 minutes

    Electric Car Battery_ Explained

A battery is a very important part of an electric car. It’s simply the powerhouse of an electric car.

It stores the energy required by motors to spin the wheels. An electric car cannot function without a battery.

Today, we’ll discuss everything in detail about an electric car battery from its working, application to its advantages, disadvantages and much more.

Before we move ahead let’s look at the different types of electric car batteries.

Different Types Of Electric Car Batteries

In today’s world, there are different types of electric car batteries and their classification is done on the basis of material used for constructing them. Here are some of the most common types of electric car batteries:

    • Lithium-Ion Battery
    • Solid-State Battery

Lithium-Ion is the most commonly used battery in electric cars.

    Structure Of A Lithium-Ion Battery

Lithium-ion batteries contain a cathode, an anode which are simply the electrodes, a separator, and an electrolyte.

This chemistry is simple as in most batteries. Let’s understand this better through its functioning.

How Does A Lithium-Ion Battery Work In An Electric Car?

In a Li-ion battery, the lithium ions flow from the negative electrode to the positive electrode. When the battery charges, the lithium ions move away from the positive electrode towards the negative one and stay there.

Similarly, when the battery of an electric car charges for the first time, the electrodes react with the electrolyte to form an initial SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interface) layer/ separator.

This reduces the battery capacity by a small amount, and the process is called Formation Loss.

However, this initial formation of the SEI layer facilitates the battery to get charged and discharged thousands of times without the electrode reacting with electrolytes.

Why Lithium-Ion Batteries Are Used In Electric Cars?

As mentioned above, electric car batteries are generally made up of lithium-ion cells. It’s widely used because of its following advantages:

    • High Energy Density: Lithium-ion cells can store a high amount of energy while maintaining their compact size. This allows it to consume less space, thus, providing more room for automakers to utilize.
    • Higher Charging Cycles: Each time the battery recharges and discharges, it is known as a Charge cycle. All batteries degrade after each cycle. However, Lithium-ion batteries can be recharged several times with very little degradation.
    • Low Risk of Fire: Lithium-ion batteries have one of the most stable configurations. Due to this, the battery doesn’t catch fire easily making it safe to use.

Where Are Batteries Installed In Electric Cars (Advantages)?

Most lithium-ion battery packs weigh a significant amount. The batteries are usually placed underneath the car’s floor.

The heavy battery packs increase the weight of the electric vehicle significantly, but it also provides them with a very low center of gravity. Which, in turn, provides them with a very planted ride.

However, in some electric cars, batteries are also installed in the front bonnet.

Example: Battery Of Tesla Model 3 Electric Car

The Tesla Model 3 is designed to have more than 1,300 charging cycles. This means that the Model 3 can easily travel 300,000 miles before it starts to show any significant signs of battery degradation.

The chemical composition of electric car batteries also keeps changing as we move ahead in time. Currently, Tesla uses a combination of Nickle-Manganese-Cobalt in the ratio of 8:1:1. The most expensive component in this combination is Cobalt.

According to a recent report, Tesla plans to further reduce the proportion of Cobalt in its future electric car batteries. This will help make the upcoming EVs very affordable.

    Solid-State Battery

Unlike normal batteries, Solid-State Batteries do not have a liquid electrolyte in between the electrodes. Instead, there’s a solid electrolyte, mostly a glass or any other material.

What Are The Advantages Of A Solid State Battery?

According to experts, Solid State Batteries have several advantages over a conventional Li-ion battery.

    • Higher Energy Density: According to John B. Goodenough , a pioneer in the field of lithium-ion batteries, a Solid-State Battery has almost 3 times more energy density than that of a lithium-ion battery.
    • Cheap: Solid-State Batteries are much more affordable than a lithium-ion battery.
    • Safer: Solid-State Batteries can function at a wide range of temperatures. Due to this, it’s not prone to catching fire even in extreme temperatures making it safe to use.

What’s The Problem With Solid State Batteries?

Although scientists have always given a very positive response on solid-state batteries, it’s still not ready to be used in EVs.

Solid-state batteries are still in the developmental stage and many companies are working on it. Thus, it would take four to five years for the technology to become commercially viable.

Once the technology gets optimized and functional, we hope it can replace the lithium-ion batteries.

What Is Vehicle To Load (V2L) Function In Hyundai Ioniq 5 Electric Car?

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / FossBytes · Friday, 26 February, 2021 - 10:29 · 2 minutes

Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicle to load (v2l) technology

Recently, Hyundai unveiled its much anticipated electric car, the Ioniq 5. The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equipped with lots of the latest technology, however, the most impressive one is its Vehicle To Load (V2L) function.

This technology is similar to the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that allows supplying stored energy from vehicles to the power grid whenever needed.

Although V2L is based on a similar principle, there is more you need to know.

Today, we’ll discuss everything about the vehicle to load (V2L). We’ll also cover its limitations and how you can use it.

What Is Vehicle To Load (V2L) Function/Technology In Hyundai Ioniq 5?

Vehicle To Load (V2L) is a function that allows the users to charge any electric device like an electric bike, scooter, dryer, camping equipment, or any other device simply through Hyundai Ioniq 5.

There are V2L ports available on the electric car, and the user just has to connect their equipment through a cable to use it.

This way the electric vehicle will act as a charger on wheels or in simple words a walking power bank but not just for your cell phone.

Batteries in electric cars are generally designed to store energy and use it for vehicle operations like supplying power to its motor and cars’ electronics.

However, with V2L technology, it can store energy and supply it to other appliances acting as a grid.

    How To Use V2L Function?

Accessing the V2L function is quite easy. As mentioned earlier, there are two charging ports: one is located inside the car under the second-row seat.

To charge your appliances using this port you have to turn on the vehicle and also you need a converter.

The second V2L port is located outside near the charging port. The good part is that you don’t have to turn on your vehicle to use this port.

What Are The Limitations Of V2L?

The problem with V2L is that it can supply only up to 3.6 kW of power. So, if you are thinking of supplying power to another vehicle like in the V2V (Vehicle-To-Vehicle) operations, it won’t be very useful.

However, this power is enough for smaller electrical appliances like a laptop, electric bicycles, etc.

We hope you now have a good understanding of the V2L function. In case you would like to add something, feel free to drop your views in the comments section below.
