    Tata Steel has rejected a plan by unions to keep open a blast furnace at the Port Talbot steelworks, ending any hopes of avoiding as many as 2,800 job losses.

    Unions met the company in London on Thursday with another plea not to press ahead with its proposals which will likely end the ability to make steel from iron ore in south Wales by September and cause thousands of job losses.

    Daniel Kebede, the general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), fired a warning shot over Keir Starmer’s bows, declaring that Labour’s current proposals on schools and education were “a long way” off the scale of change needed.

    Rail passengers across Great Britain have been told to check before they travel as a second day of strikes by train drivers will result in most services being suspended on six major lines.

    Industrial action by the drivers’ union Aslef will mean staff working for Chiltern Railways, Great Western Railway, Heathrow Express, LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express (TPE) staging a 24-hour strike on Saturday.

    NHS consultants have accepted a pay offer, ending a year-long dispute with the government, the British Medical Association has announced.

    The BMA said its members in England voted in favour by 83%, describing the offer as an improvement on one rejected earlier this year. It includes changes to the review body on doctors’ and dentists’ remuneration (DDRB).

    More than 87% of University and College Union (UCU) members at the south London institution voted for strike action in a ballot with a turnout of 69%, as well as backing action short of a strike, such as a boycott on marking papers and submissions.
