Weather tracker: Blustery conditions in Portugal while Central America swelters

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 11 March - 10:16

Maximum air temperature of 41C on 6 March at Cerro Huacalito in Costa Rica may break country’s record

On Friday night, an area of low pressure moved into the Bay of Biscay from the north Atlantic Ocean. The low shifted southwards, clipping the north coast of the Iberian peninsula before propagating eastwards and into France by Sunday evening. This brought unsettled conditions across southern and western parts of Europe.

Portugal received the brunt of these, with heavy rain, outbreaks of snow and strong winds causing blustery conditions across the country as well as some big waves to the west coast. Waves came from the west and north-west, with wave heights of 6-8 metres (20-26ft) generally observed, and waves of up to 10 metres observed at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, which is known for having waves of such size and larger.

Portugal election: centre-right coalition on course for narrow victory

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 10 March - 21:08

Centre-right parties set to defeat incumbent socialists but fall well short of a majority, exit polls suggest

A coalition of Portuguese centre-right parties is on course to narrowly defeat the incumbent socialists but fall well short of a majority, exit polls have suggested, in a closely fought snap general election in which the far-right Chega party looks set to double its share of the vote and finish third.

Three polls, published shortly after voting ended at 8pm local time, indicate the Democratic Alliance – an electoral platform made up of the large Social Democratic party (PSD) and two smaller conservative parties – is forecast to finish ahead of the Socialist party (PS).

Portugal election: tight race expected with far-right hopeful of kingmaker role – live updates

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 10 March - 19:40

Exit poll expected at 8pm local time (20.00 GMT) in second snap general election in three years

Portugal, which in April celebrates half a century since its 1974 Carnation Revolution ended almost as many years of authoritarian rule, has so far escaped the rising influence of the far right seen in other EU member states from Finland to Italy .

A strong showing by the far-right Chega party would mark the end of a Portuguese exception. Far-right populists are in ruling coalitions in Italy and Finland and propping up a rightwing government in Sweden.

Love at first bite: how Britain fell for a little Portuguese custard tart

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Saturday, 2 March - 09:00

Now available at supermarket chains as well cafes and bakeries, the pastel de nata has become a UK staple

Francisco Oliveira was working in finance in Lisbon when he decided to move to London to sell custard tarts.

The son of two bakers, he could see Britons were developing a taste for the traditional Portuguese pastel de nata , but his plans for the new business were nonetheless bold – to sell tarts and not much else.

Bobi the Portuguese mastiff stripped of record as world’s oldest ever dog

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 22 February - 12:40

Guinness World Records ‘no longer has the evidence’ that animal – 31 years and five months old when it died – was as old as claimed

Every dog has its day, they say, but Bobi the Portuguese mastiff’s reign as the “world’s oldest” hound has proven short-lived.

The once record-breaking dog has been stripped of his title by Guinness World Records (GWR) after officials declared there was no proof he was as long in the tooth as his owners claimed.

‘Historical reparation’: new bookshops in Europe give voice to female authors

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 28 December - 05:00

Greta Livraria in Lisbon and Rare Birds in Edinburgh are among the new stores dedicated to women’s writing

With its neatly arranged tables and shelves laden with books written by women, Greta Livraria’s small space masks its big ambitions. Since opening earlier this year, the bookstore in Lisbon has dedicated its space entirely to promoting a group that has, for the most part, been overlooked and undervalued by society: female authors.

It is a “form of historical reparation”, said Lorena Travassos, the store ’s founder, one that aims to “counter the longstanding disparities in sales and publications faced by women.”

‘Violent colonialist’ Magellan is unfit to keep his place in the night sky, say astronomers

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 12 November - 07:00

Indigenous peoples already had their own names for the galaxies named after the 16th-century Portuguese explorer

For centuries Ferdinand Magellan has been accorded a rare privilege. The explorer’s name has been written in the stars. Two satellite galaxies of our own Milky Way, which sparkle conspicuously over the southern hemisphere, are labelled the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

Now astronomers want to erase this celestial distinction. They say that Magellan, the16th century Portuguese sailor, was a murderer who enslaved and burned down the homes of Indigenous peoples during his leadership of the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. They insist his name should no longer be honoured by being associated with the clouds.

UK one of 32 countries facing European court action over climate stance

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Saturday, 23 September, 2023 - 04:00

Six Portuguese young people claim inadequate policies to tackle global heating breach their human rights

A key plank of the UK government’s defence against the biggest climate legal action in the world next week has fallen away as a result of the U-turn by the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, on green policies.

The UK is one of 32 countries being taken to the European court of human rights on Wednesday by a group of Portuguese young people . They will argue in the grand chamber of the Strasbourg court that the nations’ policies to tackle global heating are inadequate and in breach of their human rights obligations.

Au tour du Portugal d’interdire les équipements 5G de Huawei

      news.movim.eu / JournalDuGeek · Saturday, 3 June, 2023 - 10:00
